Dermatomyositis panniculitis: a case report.

Dermatomyositis-related panniculitis is a rare cutaneous manifestation of dermatomyositis. There are few reported cases in the medical literature. We present the case of a 60-year-old woman with a 2-year history of dermatomyositis and recent biopsy-confirmed panniculitis treated with prednisone, cyclophosphamide and i.v. immunoglobulin.

Pulmonary manifestations of polymyositis/dermatomyositis.

The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are a group of connective tissue diseases marked by varying degrees of muscle inflammation and clinical involvement of multiple organs, most notably, the lung. Pulmonary manifestations consist primarily of interstitial lung disease (ILD), which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in myositis patients. Several myositis-specific antibodies have been discovered, as well as antibodies targeting various aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase enzymes. These antibodies are associated with various clinical features and a risk for developing ILD, and their p

Cutaneous signs of classical dermatomyositis.

Idiopathic immune myopathies (IIM) are an heterogeneous group of autoimmune muscle disorders characterized by progressive muscle involvement. Dermatomyositis (DM) is the most common form of IIM. It is a multisystem disorder characterized by symmetric proximal, extensor, inflammatory myopathy, vascular involvement and a characteristic cutaneous eruption. Six types of DM have been identified: idiopathic, juvenile (JDM), cancer-related other autoimmune diseases-related, iatrogenic DM and amyopathic DM. Cutaneous manifestations of DM are the most important aspect of this disease and can precede fr…

Amyopathic dermatomyositis complicated by pneumomediastinum.

Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory disease of unclear etiology with characteristic cutaneous and musculoskeletal findings. Amyopathic dermatomyositis is a subtype without musculoskeletal involvement. Many cases of dermatomyositis are associated with underlying malignancy, but pulmonary manifestations can also be seen, the most common of which is interstitial lung disease. Pneumomediastinum is a rare complication that is important for clinicians to recognize, as it may be fatal if left untreated. The sudden onset of facial edema and shortness of breath in the setting of dermatomyositis should r…

Exercise training in juvenile dermatomyositis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of a supervised exercise training program on health parameters, physical capacity, and health-related quality of life in patients with mild and chronic juvenile dermatomyositis (DM). METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal study following 10 children with mild and chronic juvenile DM (disease duration >1 year). The exercise program consisted of twice-a-week aerobic and resistance training. At baseline and after the 12-week intervention, we assessed muscle strength and function, aerobic conditioning, body composition, juvenile DM scores, and health-re…

Dermatomyositis related to autoimmune thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Reports on the coexistence of dermatomyositis (DM) with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) are very few. Our aim is to define the relationship of the two conditions, identify clinical, laboratory, electromyographic and pathologic features of coexistent DM and AIT. METHODS: We underwent a MEDLINE search to identify relevant literature published in the past 30 years. Concurrently, we analysed retrospectively medical records of five patients diagnosed with DM and AIT from our hospital. RESULTS: Eleven cases were included. 90.9% of patients were female with a mean (SD) age of…

Dermatomyositis masquerading as pulmonary embolism.

A 61-year-old Caucasian was admitted to Department of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis, Medical University of Bialystok, Poland for progressive muscle weakness and weight loss. Eighteen months prior to admission, the patient had been diagnosed with pulmonary embolism. At that point he was started on Enoxaparin QD. Past medical history was unremarkable. In the interim, the patient developed fever, myalgia and progressive dyspnea. Physical examination on admission revealed a rash on his upper torso and back, and the extensor surfaces of all four extremities. Laboratory values included CPK 8229, M

Dermatomyositis associated with thyroid cancer.

We describe herein dermatomyositis (DM) associated with thyroid cancer in a 54-year-old woman. She was resistant to corticosteroids at first, but removal of the coexisting cancer resulted in improvement of DM. Reports on the association of DM with thyroid cancer are very few. However, recently, increasing incidence of thyroid cancer is pointed out. It is thought that increasing incidence reflects increased detection of subclinical disease due to increased diagnostic scrutiny, not an increase in the true occurrence of thyroid cancer. Thus, DM associated with thyroid cancer may be more frequent …

[Juvenile dermatomyositis: 4 case studies].

Juvenile dermatomyositis is a rare disease. The estimated incidence is 2 to 3 cases per million population. Before the use of corticosteroids, prognosis was poor for most patients. Today, despite a better prognosis, the side effects of long-term treatment still burden the outcome of the disease. The diagnosis of this entity is difficult and often delayed due to its rarity. It has been shown that the delay in diagnosis and care is a major factor for poor prognosis. Cutaneous findings are often inaugural, allowing early diagnosis. This study's aim was to share our 10-year experience with juvenil…

[Juvenile dermatomyositis: diagnosis and treatment].

Juvenile dermatomyositis is a rare inflammatory myopathy with characteristic skin manifestations and muscular weakness. Muscle biopsy is important for establishing the diagnosis. Four patients with juvenile dermatomyositis were studied retrospectively. Steroids remain the first line treatment. Corticosteroids resistance is the primary indication for the use of intravenous immunoglobulins or immunosuppressive drugs. Further studies are necessarily aimed at finding biological markers to select and guide new therapeutical approaches for those patients.
