Health problems in a large cohort of Americans traveling to developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Millions of Americans visit developing countries each year, however, little is known about their health during travel. This study describes health problems in a large cohort of American travelers during and after their trip. METHODS: A 2-year survey of 784 travelers (95% follow-up) was conducted for persons traveling for < or = 90 days. At the pretravel visit, travelers were given a postcard to record adverse health events. Following travel, standardized telephone interviews were performed for any positive responses, or if the card was not returned. All travelers were contacted 2

Injuries and noncommunicable diseases: emerging health problems of children in developing countries.

The present article identifies, for children living in developing countries, the major causes of ill-health that are inadequately covered by established health programmes. Injuries and noncommunicable diseases, notably asthma, epilepsy, dental caries, diabetes mellitus and rheumatic heart disease, are growing in significance. In countries where resources are scarce it is to be expected that increasing importance will be attached to the development and implementation of measures against these problems. Their control may benefit from the application of elements of programmes directed against inf

Drugs for STD management in developing countries: choice, procurement, cost, and financing.

OBJECTIVES: (i) To compare acquisition costs of drugs between countries to treat one standardised STD episode. (ii) To explain variations, treatment protocols, purchasing policies, procurement systems, and sources of financing. METHODS: National STD guidelines, purchasing mechanisms, and drug acquisition costs from 15 countries were compiled, using information from ministries of health and European Commissions headquarters. Prices were converted in European currency unit (ecu). Acquisition costs per episode were calculated for the four main STD syndromes--urethral discharge, vaginal discharge

Onchocerciasis and other eye problems in developing countries: a challenge for optometrists.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis, also known as River Blindness, affects about 18 million people around the world, resulting in severe visual impairment or blindness for approximately 2 million. METHODS: The disease is transmitted through the bite of a tiny black fly, which breeds in fast moving rivers and streams. The fly injects immature forms of the parasite worm, Onchocerca volvulus, whose microfilariae migrate to superficial tissues, and may invade any part of the eye. In the eye, living microfilariae may be found in any ocular structure, however, sclerosing keratitis, a severe corneal involve

Pathogenesis of respiratory infections due to influenza virus: implications for developing countries.

The influenza viruses have an important and distinctive place among respiratory viruses: they change antigenic character at irregular intervals, infect individuals of all ages, cause illnesses characterized by constitutional symptoms and tracheobronchitis, produce yearly epidemics associated frequently with excess morbidity and mortality, and predispose the host to bacterial superinfections. Much is known about influenza viruses, but their role in respiratory infections among children in developing countries is poorly understood, and the risk factors that lead to the excess morbidity and morta

Economic Evaluation of Diabetic Retinopathy Screening in Developing Countries: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate economic aspect of diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening strategies in developing countries. It focused on the cost-effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) and telemedicine compared to standard care. METHODS: A structured literature search was conducted using PubMed, ScienceDirect, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Studies were included if they involved patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus, conducted in low- or middle-income countries at the time of the study, compared AI or telemedicine-based intervention with standar

Metabolic disorder-associated kidney disease and diabetic kidney disease in developing countries.

There is a paucity of literature addressing the epidemiology of metabolic disorder-associated kidney disease in developing countries, but extrapolating from the high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in low- and middle-income countries, and the known high prevalence of diabetic kidney disease in the same, the health and economic impact of metabolic disorder-associated kidney disease and diabetic kidney disease is substantial. Resource constraints in developing countries amplify the challenges in preventing, detecting, and treating metabolic disorder-associated kidney disease and diabetic kidney

Portable wireless ultrasound in pediatric neurosurgery: a valuable resource for developing countries.

This investigation assesses the functionality, diagnostic efficacy, and limitations of a portable phased-array ultrasound apparatus in pediatric neurosurgical applications within a resource-constrained environment in Mombasa, Kenya. The ultrasound device was integrated into four neurosurgical missions conducted under the auspices of the SAWUBONA Foundation between 2021-2023. A retrospective analysis was performed on the diagnosed cases. Systematic training was provided to local neurosurgeons to enable autonomous operation of the device. Three representative cases were selected to elucidate the

Comprehensive management evaluation of anaphylactic shock in dental clinics across developing countries.

Anaphylaxis shock is defined as a sudden, severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening and typically occurs within minutes to a few hours following exposure to a triggering substance. While anaphylaxis shock can be a rare side effect of dental treatments, including sedation and anesthesia, dentists must be prepared to respond promptly and appropriately to prevent complications such as airway obstruction and cardiac issues. In developing countries, managing anaphylactic shock presents challenges, often due to low awareness among dentists and a lack of necessary equipment. Immediate dia

Scoping review of the psychosocial aspects of infertility in developing countries: protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Infertility is a widespread social phenomenon. For both women and men, there are several psychosocial issues associated with infertility. Numerous systematic reviews have focused on individuals' psychosocial issues pertaining to infertility, however, these have been conducted in developed countries. Thus, there is a gap in the current literature to analyse individuals' psychosocial issues associated with infertility in developing countries. Given that there are various contextual factors to consider for appropriate interventions to be implemented, it is vital to explore this topi

Maternal antibody interference contributes to reduced rotavirus vaccine efficacy in developing countries.

Rotavirus (RV) vaccine efficacy is significantly reduced in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared to high-income countries. This review summarizes current research into the mechanisms behind this phenomenon, with a particular focus on the evidence that maternal antibody (matAb) interference is a contributing factor to this disparity. All RV vaccines currently in use are orally administered, live-attenuated virus vaccines that replicate in the infant gut, which leaves their efficacy potentially impacted by both placentally transferred immunoglobulin G (IgG) and mucosal IgA Abs con

What Children Eat in Developing Countries: Diet in the Etiology of Undernutrition?

We live in a world of paradoxes: one half of the world is overweight or obese with abundant access to food and the other half undernourished due to poor food access. It has been estimated that nearly 36% of children in Asia are stunted. Worldwide, approximately 1 in 4 children under the age of 5 years shows stunted growth, making the number of stunted children to 155 million; 52 million children under 5 years are wasted, of which 17 million are severely wasted. Given the wide-scale nature of global malnutrition and its long-term consequences, why has this scar in our consciousness not being ad

Bacterial Resistance in Pneumonia in Developing Countries-A Role for Iron Chelation.

Pneumonia represents one of the major infectious diseases in developing countries and is associated with high mortality, in particular in children under the age of five. The main causative bacterial agents are Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae type B, accounting for 33% and 16%, respectively, of the mortality in under-fives. Iron modulates the immune response in infectious diseases and increased iron levels can lead to complications such as sepsis and multiorgan failure. This review will look into the use of iron chelators in order to reduce microbial growth and attenuate a d
