BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Approximately 50% of diabetic patients are estimated to develop DPN, depending on disease duration and diabetic control. Early diagnosis of DPN will avoid complications, including non-traumatic lower limb amputation, which is considered the most debilitating complication, as well as significant psychological, social, and economical problems. There is a paucity of literature on DPN from rural Uganda. This study aimed to deliver the prevalence and grade of DPN among DM patients in rural Ug

The objective of this pilot clinical study was to identify salivary biomarkers that are associated with periodontal disease and measures of diabetic autonomic dysfunction. Saliva samples from 32 participants were obtained from 3 groups: healthy (H), type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM), and type 1 diabetes mellitus with neuropathy (DMN). Based on the periodontal examination, individuals' mean Periodontal Screening and Recording scores were categorized into two groups (periodontally healthy and gingivitis), and correlated to specific salivary inflammatory biomarkers assessed by a customized protein ar

The association between nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) or liver fibrosis and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) has not been well studied. We aimed to investigate the association of NAFL or liver fibrosis indices and DPN in individuals with type 2 diabetes. In this observational study, we included 264 individuals with type 2 diabetes, and calculated non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) liver fat score, NAFLD fibrosis score, and Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index to evaluate the status of NAFLD or liver fibrosis. DPN was diagnosed when the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument-Physical Examina

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 29 million Americans have diabetes, and 70% of diabetic patients develop diabetic peripheral neuropathy [1,2]. Up to 27% of the direct medical cost of diabetes may be attributed to DPN [3]. A 2013 article from the American Diabetes Association reported a $176 billion direct medical cost of diabetes in 2012 [4]. DPN patients often suffer from shooting and burning pain in their distal limbs and a severe loss of sensation. Diabetic foot ulcers, infections, and amputations may follow. Currently available treatments: tricyclic antidepressants, ant

Chronic diabetic complications may afflict all organ tissues including cardiovascular and respiratory system. The aim of the study was to establish if the presence of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) was associated with impaired pulmonary function tests in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). 46 adolescents with T1D and 25 healthy subjects at the age 15-19years were enrolled to the study. Basic anthropometric data, diabetes onset and duration, plasma glucose and A1c were established. Pulmonary function tests were measured by spirometry and the presence of CAN was examined by heart

Diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy (DLSRPN) has been shown to be due to ischemic injury from microvasculitis. The present study tests whether ischemic injury and microvasculitis are the pathologic cause of non-diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy (LSRPN), and whether the pathologic alterations are different between LSRPN and DLSRPN. We studied distal cutaneous nerve biopsies of 47 patients with LSRPN and compared findings with those of 14 age-matched healthy controls and 33 DLSRPN patients. In both disease conditions, we found evidence of ischemic injury (multifocal fiber

The most serious complication of diabetes mellitus is clinical nephropathy. The development of persistent proteinuria (urinary excretion of more than 300 mg albumin/24 hours) implies an extremely high risk of early death. Renal failure is the most frequent cause of death but the mortality of cardiovascular diseases is also increased. Besides the link between albuminuria (nephropathy) and atherosclerosis in coronary arteries, albuminuria is also a predictor of microangiopathy in other organs than the kidneys. The annual incidence of proliferative retinopathy in early nephropathy is 10-15% compa

There is strong evidence that improved blood glucose control in individuals with diabetes mellitus reduces the risk of complications and leads to better long-term health outcomes. However, a rapid reduction in blood glucose levels can also lead to microvascular complications. Treatment-induced neuropathy in diabetes (TIND) is a painful neuropathy that may occur following a rapid decrease in blood glucose in patients with previously poorly controlled diabetes. This case report describes a woman who developed burning pain and sleep disturbances after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and unde

Diabetic neuropathy and reduced sleep quality are both frequent complications of diabetes mellitus, yet their interaction and mutual influence remain poorly understood. This review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the association between diabetic neuropathy and sleep quality. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Of 1356 identified records, 32 studies met the inclusion criteria. Three randomized clinical trials were included in a post-hoc exploratory meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of gabapentinoids on Sleep Interference Scores in

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a major global health concern associated with serious complications, high healthcare costs, and reduced quality of life. Musculoskeletal pain is a common complication and contributes to limitations in daily activities and increased healthcare utilization. Pain is a multidimensional phenomenon typically classified as nociceptive, neuropathic, or nociplastic; however, evidence regarding pain mechanisms and phenotypes in people with DM remains limited. This review aimed to synthesize and critically review the literature on musculoskeletal pain in individuals with DM, foc

BACKGROUND: Clinical guidelines recommend physical activity (PA) to prevent diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). However, these recommendations lack specificity in terms of optimal PA intensity and duration. We aimed to determine associations between PA, DPN and painful DPN (pDPN).
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of persons with diabetes, PA was assessed with a wrist-worn accelerometer, recording time spent at different milli-gravity (mG) intensity levels with categories set as light (45-100 mG), moderate (100-400 mG), or vigorous (>400 mG). DPN was defined by Michigan Neuropathy Screeni
