Today's disposable diapers are high-performance and well-tested products, designed to keep skin dry and healthy. They are primarily made of biologically inert polymers, commonly used in fabrics and other materials that are in contact with skin, and in foods and cosmetics. Still, product safety and ingredients in everyday products can be a source of anxiety for new parents. This article provides the facts behind some commonly asked questions from consumers about diaper ingredients and safety, including myths and facts related to chlorine, latex, dyes, and chemical additives.

A male infant presented with progressive jaundice immediately after birth. Fecal acholia and choluria associated with extensive bullous skin lesions in his trunk, abdomen, and upper and lower limbs developed during phototherapy. Several diagnostic hypotheses were presented, including neonatal porphyria, hemochromatosis, Alagille syndrome, and neonatal lupus. A 24-hour urine sample for the dosage of urinary porphyrins was collected, showing high results (1823.6µg in 100mL). At 50 days of life, fluorescence spectroscopy using a Wood's lamp revealed simultaneous bright red fluorescence of urine-s

In 1983, a questionnaire study was carried out to ascertain the types and principal causes of diaper dermatitis. Questionnaires were sent to 3,942 nursery personnel, and 1,773 responses were received. Diaper dermatitis was classified into six types according to distribution of skin lesions: type I was rash on the whole area in contact with the diaper; type II, eruptions on pubis, external genitalia, and intergluteal folds; type III, peridiaper rashes; type IV, psoriasis-like dermatitis; type V, perianal noduli; and type VI, partial eruptions of infantile dermatitis. According to questionnaire

HLA typing was performed in 14 patients with psoriasiform napkin dermatitis (PND). Only 2 patients carried one of the three antigens (HLA-B13, B17, Bw37) associated with psoriasis vulgaris. The frequency of these antigens in PND corresponds to that in healthy controls, but differs significantly (p less than 0.01) from that in a population of psoriatics. Our results indicate that patients with PND are not true psoriatics, and that PND and psoriasis are different etiological entities.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a skin disease very common. The diagnosis is clinical with a scaly erythema. Given the increasing frequency of cases of psoriasis of the child, we are interested in studying the role of this disease especially in infants. We report five cases of psoriasis collected in units of pediatric dermatology at Children's Hospital of Rabat.
RESULTS: It is about a girl and four boys ranging in age between 41 days and 2 years. There is in three cases a family history of autoimmune disease, in two cases a notion of family atopée. Three cases among the five cases have plaque psor

A 770 g birthweight, 25-weeks gestation infant girl was born from a bigeminal pregnancy. Six days later she developed erythematous "diaper dermatitis" and maceration of the flexural areas. Despite topical antifungal therapy, erythematous plaques appeared 2 days later on the back. Within less than 24 hours, skin erosions with crusting appeared and spread over the whole body. Candida albicans was found in cutaneous scales, and blood, umbilical catheter, and cerebrospinal fluid cultures. In spite of intravenous fluconazole therapy, her general condition deteriorated and she died 2 days later. Thi

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel treatment for perianal excoriation in an infant receiving a promotility agent.
CASE SUMMARY: A 2-month-old boy with reflux, and regurgitation was treated with cisapride. Shortly after cisapride therapy he developed a rash on his buttocks and anal irritation that progressed in severity despite the use of numerous topical products and extended diaper-free periods. A topical cholestyramine ointment compound was prepared and administered, resulting in complete resolution within 3 days.
DISCUSSION: Cisapride can decrease the gastrointestinal transit time, which can

Exposure to topically applied substances occurs routinely in premature and hospitalized infant care. Safety determinations are most accurate when exposures are based on appropriately designed studies to capture variations in practice patterns and population heterogeneity. Current safety assessments may not reflect actual practice resulting in overly conservative or understated default assumptions for toxicological determinations. We quantified the amount of baby wipes lotion transferred to premature and term neonatal skin as grams/kg body weight/day. We observed the soil type and number of wip

Diaper dermatitis is a common condition that often prompts parents to seek medical attention. Irritant diaper dermatitis is by far the most common cause, but numerous potentially serious diseases can present with changes of the skin in the diaper area. The differential diagnosis can include psoriasis, metabolic disorders, rare immune diseases and infection. Clinical examination can be helpful in distinguishing the underlying cause. General screening laboratory tests, as well as select testing when a specific condition is suspected, can be used to challenge or confirm the putative diagnosis.
