Steatosis and gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by high-fat diet are reversed by 1-week chow diet administration.

Many studies have recently shown that diet and its impact on gut microbiota are closely related to obesity and metabolic diseases including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Gut microbiota may be an important intermediate link, causing gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases under the influence of changes in diet and genetic predisposition. The aim of this study was to assess the reversibility of liver phenotype in parallel with exploring the resilience of the mice gut microbiota by switching high-fat diet (HFD) to chow diet (CD). Mice were fed an HF for 8 weeks. A part of the mice was euthani

An oily fish diet increases insulin sensitivity compared to a red meat diet in young iron-deficient women.

Beneficial effects of n-3 fatty acids on a variety of physiological functions have been reported, but information related to the effects of oily fish consumed within a varied diet on glucose metabolism and diabetes risk is scarce. The objective of the study was to compare the effects of a diet rich in oily fish to those of a diet rich in red meat on lipid profile, oxidative status, glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in young, iron-deficient women. The study was designed attending the CONSORT statement guidelines. It was a randomised crossover dietary intervention study with two 8-week

Very low energy ketogenic diet vs. Mediterranean diet for MASLD: Superior steatosis reduction in a randomised pilot study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Weight loss is the cornerstone of treatment for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This pilot study compared the efficacy and safety of a ketogenic very low energy diet (VLED) vs. a Mediterranean diet (MD) in improving hepatic steatosis and liver histology in individuals with overweight or obesity and MASLD. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomised controlled trial in adults with histologically confirmed MASLD and a BMI of 27-35 kg/m2. Participants were assigned to either a 12-week VLED (3,151 kJ/day) or MD program (8,950 kJ/day) and monitored

Associations of adherence to the DASH diet and Mediterranean diet with maternal c-reactive protein levels during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) during pregnancy, a marker of inflammation, is associated with adverse outcomes. Better understanding the relationship between CRP and modifiable factors, including diet, is essential to assist early pregnancy lifestyle interventions. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between adherence to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet (DASH-diet) and the Mediterranean diet (MED-diet) during pregnancy with maternal plasma CRP in early and late pregnancy. METHODS AND RESULTS: Secondary analysis of the Creatine and Pregn

Chronic migraine reversal and prevention with the LIFE diet: a nutrient dense whole food plant-based diet (WFPBD).

We report a case of a 60-year-old man who struggled with frequent migraines for 12.5 years, which were refractory to all conventional therapies. Six months before initial consultation, these migraines become chronic. The patient was then advised to follow the Low Inflammatory Foods Everyday (LIFE) diet, a nutrient-dense, dark green leafy vegetable-rich, whole food plant-based diet. Within 2 months, his headache frequency declined from 18 to 24 headache days per month to 1, and he discontinued his preventive and abortive migraine medications. After 3 months, the patient had no headaches. These

Low-dose diet supplement of a natural flavonoid, luteolin, ameliorates diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in mice.

SCOPE: Mast cells play important roles in diet-induced obesity and diabetes, and some synthetic mast cell stabilizers can improve related metabolic disturbances in mice. Luteolin (LU) is a potent natural mast cell stabilizer. However, a direct correlation between LU and these common metabolic diseases is not established. METHODS AND RESULTS: Male C57BL/6 mice were fed low-fat diet, high-fat diet (HFD), HFD with 0.002 and 0.01% LU for 12 wk, respectively. Dietary LU suppressed HFD-induced body weight gain, fat deposition, and adipocyte hypertrophy. Meanwhile, glucose intolerance and insulin se

When Diet Trends Go Viral: Cutaneous Manifestations of Social Media-Driven Fad Diets and Supplements.

The rise of fad diets and unregulated supplement use, amplified by social media and aggressive marketing, has dramatically shifted public attitudes toward nutrition and health. This new landscape is associated with a growing spectrum of dermatologic presentations, as the skin frequently serves as an early indicator of both nutritional deficiencies and toxicities. Popular dietary trends, such as ketogenic, carnivore, and raw vegan regimens, have been linked to cutaneous disorders, including prurigo pigmentosa, scurvy-like eruptions, hair loss, xerosis, and pigmentary changes. In parallel, the o

Diet and deprivation in pregnancy: a rat model to investigate the effects of the maternal diet on the growth of the dam and its offspring.

The offspring of women in the poorest socio-economic groups in Western societies have an increased risk of developing non-communicable disease in adult life. Deprivation is closely related to the consumption of a diet with an excess of energy (sugar and fat), salt and a shortage of key vitamins. To test the hypothesis that this diet adversely affects the development and long-term health of the offspring, we have formulated two rodent diets, one with a nutrient profile corresponding to the diet of pregnant women in the poorest socio-economic group (DEP) and a second that incorporated current UK

Associations of adherence to the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among US adults.

BACKGROUND: The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and the Mediterranean diet are associated with reduced cardiovascular, tumor, and diabetes risk, but the effect on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet with the risk of COPD in American adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 28,605 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018 survey cycle who had complete dietary and other questionnaire data. Intergeneration transfer of diet patterns? Parental self-report of diet and their report of their young adult children with ASD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects two percent of American children and often results in neophobia, hypersensitivity to foods, and firmly set food preferences, leading to higher proportions of individuals suffering from diet-related chronic diseases. Our objective was to conduct an explorative pilot study to examine parents' perception of food intake for themselves and their young adult children with ASD. We employed comparative analysis to discover potential pathways to improve diet quality and lower the risk for chronic disease in individuals with ASD. Data from an online survey in n = 4

Microcirculatory and glycocalyx properties are lowered by high-salt diet but augmented by Western diet in genetically heterogeneous mice.

Many individuals in industrialized societies consume a high-salt, Western diet(WD); however, the effects of this diet on microcirculatory properties and glycocalyx barrier function are unknown. Young genetically heterogeneous male and female mice underwent 12 wk of normal chow (NC) diet, NC diet with 4% salt (NC4%), Western diet (WD), or WD with 4% salt (WD4%). Microcirculatory properties and glycocalyx barrier function were evaluated in the mesenteric microcirculation, using an intravital microscope equipped with an automated capture and analysis system. Total microvascular density summed acr

Switching to a Healthy Diet Prevents the Detrimental Effects of Western Diet in a Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer Model.

Inflammatory bowel disease increases the odds of developing colitis-associated cancer. We hypothesized that Western-style diet (WD) aggravates azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS)-induced colitis-associated tumorigenesis and that switching to the standard AIN93G diet will ameliorate disease symptoms even after cancer initiation. Female BALB/c mice received either WD (WD group) or standard AIN93G diet (AIN group) for the whole experimental period. After five weeks, the mice received 12.5 mg/kg AOM intraperitoneally, followed by three DSS cycles. In one group of mice, the WD was

Using imagery to identify and characterise core beliefs in women with bulimia nervosa, dieting and non-dieting women.

Women with bulimia nervosa (BN), dieters and non-dieting control participants were questioned about spontaneous imagery linked to concern with food and eating, weight and shape. The downward arrow technique was used to access any associated negative or core beliefs, which were examined for belief, distress and content. A semi-structured interview with open and closed questions was used. Negative self (core) beliefs were successfully accessed, and responses to the interview items had good test-retest and good inter-rater reliability. Patients with BN reported significantly more negative self (c

Preparation for barium enema: comparison of a commercial formula diet and low-residue, clear-liquid diets in inpatients.

The barium enema examination is the most frequently done initial diagnostic evaluation for disease of the lower gastrointestinal tract. Adequate preparation of the colon is essential because inadequate preparation necessitates repetition, with patient discomfort, decreased caloric intake, and increased cost. A formula diet (Ensure) has been reported as superior to the usual low-residue, clear-liquid diet for bowel preparation. We evaluated the feasibility of using this formula diet in a general medical inpatient population. We found no significant difference in the quality of preparation (72%

Comparative effects of ketogenic diets and mediterranean diets on obesity and metabolic outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ketogenic diets (KD) and Mediterranean diets (MD) are among the most widely studied dietary approaches for obesity and metabolic disorders; however, their comparative efficacy remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of KD and MD on anthropometric and metabolic outcomes in adults. A comprehensive search of original databases was conducted from inception until March 2026. Randomized controlled trials comparing KD with MD in adults were included. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random-ef

Diet Quality, Healthy Dietary Restrictions, and Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Food Deserts Among the Elderly in Spain.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food deserts are areas characterized by limited access to affordable and healthy food, often due to significant distances from supermarkets-exceeding 1.6 km in urban areas and 16 km in rural settings. These spatial limitations exacerbate health and socioeconomic disparities. This study aimed to assess diet quality and explore the barriers influencing dietary behaviors among individuals aged 60 and older residing in food deserts in Aragón, Spain. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study using a phenomenological approach was conducted, complemented by descriptive analyse

Influence of Mediterranean Diet Adherence and Physical Activity on Bone Health in Celiac Children on a Gluten-Free Diet.

We aimed to assess the influence of the Mediterranean Diet adherence and physical activity (PA) on body composition, with a particular focus on bone health, in young patients with celiac disease (CD). The CD group (n = 59) included children with CD with a long (>18 months, n = 41) or recent (<18 months, n = 18) adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). The non-celiac group (n = 40) included non-celiac children. After adjusting for potential confounders, the CD group showed lower body weight (p = 0.034), lean mass (p = 0.003), bone mineral content (p = 0.006), and bone Z-score (p = 0.036) than non
