This study examined the effects of coffee berry pulp (CBP) extract on hepatic lipid accumulation and blood lipid levels in mice fed on a high-fat, high-fructose (HFHF) diet. Male C57BL/6J mice were divided into the following four groups and fed their respective diets for 15 weeks: normal diet, HFHF diet, and HFHF diet supplemented with 100 or 200 mg/kg body weight CBP extract. CBP inhibited weight gain and normalized blood glucose and insulin levels. CBP supplementation also inhibited lipid and lipoprotein accumulation in the liver, thereby effectively regulating triglyceride (TG) levels in bo

OBJECTIVES: Large volumes of polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution reduce patient acceptance of colonoscopy. A prepackaged low-residue diet (PLRD; Clear-Through) may improve bowel cleansing and allow further PEG reduction. This exploratory randomized study evaluated whether PLRD permits decreased PEG with ascorbic acid (PEG-Asc) volume while maintaining cleansing quality.
METHODS: In this single-center, endoscopist-blinded, three-arm randomized trial, 180 patients were allocated to Group A (self-adjusted diet + 1.5 L PEG-Asc), Group B (PLRD + 1.5 L PEG-Asc), or Group C (PLRD + 1.0 L PEG-Asc). Th

INTRODUCTION: Because of the environmental impacts of meat production, sustainable eating emphasizes eating less meat, and especially less red and processed meat. Here, barriers and enablers to reducing meat intake, and perceptions of sustainable diets, were examined among adults with low income, who often face barriers to food access and choice. The implementation science framework COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behavior) model was used to contextualize the findings and inform behavior change strategies.
METHODS: 20 adults in Los Angeles County with low incomes (<300% FPL) parti

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with genetic predispositions such as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) contributing significantly to early-onset disease. This study investigated the synergic chemopreventive potential of two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and sulindac (SU), in combination with a pesco-vegetarian diet (PVD), using Apc-mutated PIRC rats, a well-established model of CRC. Animals were treated over three months with two doses of ASA (800 and 1600 ppm) or a single low dose

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) administered after gastrectomies can prevent postoperative weight loss. However, the amount of additional energy to be added to energy requirements after gastrectomy is unclear. This study aimed to clarify dietary energy intake and its association with weight loss in postgastrectomy patients.
METHODS: We performed a single-center, single-arm, open-label, non-randomized clinical trial. Fifty patients with gastric cancer who underwent distal or total gastrectomy were included in this study. Until 3 months postoperatively, the patients contin

In the present study we were interested in studying the effect of white beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) as diet supplementation on glucose-insulin and metabolic homeostasis in early overfeeding rats. Small litter (SL) was adjusted to 3 pups on post-natal day 3, while normal litter (NL) was kept with 8 pups. The milk collection and milk intake were performed, and the rat-offspring when weaned (at 22 days old), were fed a standard (NL-SD and SL-SD groups) or a white bean (2.5 % w/w) supplemented diet (NL-WB and SL-WB groups). Body weight, food and water intake were measured from weaning until adul

BACKGROUND & AIMS: This study aimed to assess whether a fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) programme as an adjunct to usual care can reduce liver fat and liver inflammation/fibrosis as measured by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in patients with type 2 diabetes.
METHODS: This study analyses secondary outcomes of the Fasting In diabetes Treatment (FIT) trial, which was a randomised, controlled, assessor-blinded trial in which people with type 2 diabetes using metformin only and/or diet alone for glycaemic control were randomised to receive 5-consecutive day cycles of FMD monthly as adjunct to usual

BACKGROUND: Platycodin D (PD) has been reported to treat metabolic diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In addition, platycodin D has been reported to activate intestinal 5'AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation levels, thereby reducing lipid absorption. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore whether PD activation of intestinal AMPK and reduced lipid absorption can improve non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
METHODS: Clean-grade male C57/BL mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) (containing 60% calories) for 16 weeks, and oral PD (10 mg/kg/day) was administe

BACKGORUND: Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST) is one of the causative agents of gastroenteritis in pigs. Pigs fed a diet supplemented with raw potato starch (RPS) have improved gut health by the alteration of the microbiota composition and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of RPS supplementation in reducing infection severity and fecal shedding in ST-infected pigs.
METHODS: The weaned experimental pigs were divided into two groups: CON (n = 6) fed a corn/soybean-based diet and TRT (n = 6) supplemented with 5% RPS. After 21 d, th

Nano-selenium (nano-Se) has been extensively explored as a biostimulant for improving the quality of grain crops. However, there are few reports about the effect on the medicinal components of Chinese herbal medicine cultured with nano-Se. Here, we sprayed nano-Se during the cultivation of Panax notoginseng (SePN), and measured the changes of medicinal components compared with conventional Panax notoginseng (PN). Furthermore, we identified a more pronounced effect of SePN on reducing obesity in animals compared with PN. By measuring antioxidant capacity, histopathology, gene expression related

Objective: Hazelnut oil (HO) is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. This study intended to analyze the effects of hazelnut oil supplementation on the serum lipid profile and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in hamsters fed a high-cholesterol (HC) diet. Methods: Hamsters were fed a basic diet (control group) and an HC diet (HC group) for 16 weeks (n = 10 in each group). Hamsters were fed an HC diet for four weeks to induce hyperlipidemia and were then fed an HC diet enriched with 5% (low-dose HC + HO group; n = 10) and 10% HO (high-dose HC + HO group; n = 10) fo

In this study, we investigated the effect of diet supplementation with sodium butyrate (5% w/w), a short-chain fatty acid produced by the intestinal microbiota, on metabolic parameters, body adiposity, hepatic and pancreatic lipid accumulation, beta cell function/mass as well as on the structure and function of the tight junction-mediated intestinal epithelial barrier in both normal and obese/prediabetic C57 mice fed a regular (control) or high-fat diet for 60 days, respectively. Butyrate treatment significantly inhibited all the high-fat-induced metabolic dysfunctions evaluated, i.e. signific

BACKGROUND: Diastolic dysfunction (DD), a hallmark of obesity and primary defect in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, is a predictor of future cardiovascular events. We previously reported that linagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, improved DD in Zucker Obese rats, a genetic model of obesity and hypertension. Here we investigated the cardioprotective effects of linagliptin on development of DD in western diet (WD)-fed mice, a clinically relevant model of overnutrition and activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

L-Arginine is an essential amino acid in many species that has been shown to influence reproduction. However, in horses a dose of 1% L-arginine of total dietary intake impaired absorption of other amino acids, whereas a dose of 0.5% did not. The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate postpartum parameters on mares supplemented with 0.5% L-arginine through the last 90d of gestation and 14d postpartum. Sixteen light-horse mares were randomly divided in two groups: 8 mares supplemented with 0.5% L-arginine and 8 mares fed an isonitrogenous equivalent. Gestation length, days to uterine cle

Dietary phytic acid (PA; myo-inositol [MI] hexaphosphate) is known to inhibit colon carcinogenesis in rodents. Dietary fiber, which is a negative risk factor of colon cancer, improves characteristics of the colonic environment, such as the content of organic acids and microflora. We hypothesized that dietary PA would improve the colonic luminal environment in rats fed a high-fat diet. To test this hypothesis, rats were fed diets containing 30% beef tallow with 2.04% sodium PA, 0.4% MI, or 1.02% sodium PA + 0.2% MI for 3 weeks. Compared with the control diet, the sodium PA diet up-regulated cec

Ipragliflozin is a novel and selective sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that induces sustained increases in urinary glucose excretion by inhibiting renal glucose reabsorption and thereby exerting a subsequent antihyperglycemic effect. Here, we examined the effect of ipragliflozin on body weight in high-fat diet-induced (HFD) obese rats. Treatment of ipragliflozin (10mg/kg once daily) reduced body weight despite a slight increase in food intake. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography demonstrated that the reduction in body weight was accompanied by reduced visc

Overweight status is common among women breast cancer survivors and places them at greater risk for metabolic disorders, cardiovascular morbidity, and breast cancer recurrence than nonoverweight survivors. Efforts to promote weight control in this population are needed. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of low-fat or low-carbohydrate diet counseling on weight loss, body composition, and changes in metabolic indexes in overweight postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. Survivors (n = 40) were randomized to receive dietitian counseling for a low-fat or a reduced carbohydr

High-viscosity carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) promotes gastrointestinal disorders, tissue alterations and bacterial overgrowth in pigs. The impact of CMC on intestinal absorptive and secretory physiology is not known. We hypothesised that CMC consumption alters intestinal Na-dependent glucose absorption and stimulates electrogenic chloride secretion. For testing this hypothesis, twenty-four piglets were weaned at 21 d of age and pair-fed for 13 d a starter diet based on skimmed milk powder and maltodextrin containing cellulose (control) or CMC. Body weight and faecal total aerobe and coliform co

Type 2 diabetes and obesity commonly coexist, making glycemia and body weight both central treatment goals. Few trials have directly compared a high-fiber dietary intervention with metformin. The factors associated with individual responses to high-fiber diet also remain unclear. In this single-center, open-label, head-to-head clinical trial, 48 adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity were randomized to a high-fiber dietary intervention without glucose-lowering medication (n = 36) or metformin (n = 12) monotherapy for 84 days; 46 completed the trial. Clinical outc
