The establishment of polyploid populations is constrained by minority cytotype exclusion, whereby newly formed polyploids are lost when rare in predominantly diploid populations. Here, we consider this problem through a continuous-time approximation of a discrete model of tetraploid establishment. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of triploidy in a women who conceived after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
DESIGN: Case report.
SETTING: Maternity unit of a university hospital.
PATIENT(S): A 29-year-old woman who was pregnant following intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
INTERVENTION(S): Ultrasound and serum screening.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Amniocentesis and postmortem findings.
RESULT(S): Amniocentesis confirmed the karyotype to be 69XXY, and the pregnancy was terminated.
CONCLUSION(S): This case refers to diandric triploidy resulting from fertilization by diploid sperm.

It is not easy to make a differential diagnosis among adenoma, hyperplasia and carcinoma with hyperparathyroidism (HPT). We investigated the flowcytometric nuclear DNA content and analysis of cell cycle for 29 patients (39 parathyroid glands) with HPT and 16 normal parathyroid glands at the Department of Surgery II, Fukushima Medical College. An experiment was conducted to elucidate the origin of tetraploids (2n = 4x = 44) of Paragonimus westermani that occur together with diploid (2n = 2x = 22) and triploid (2n = 3x = 33) types in Liaoning Province, the People's Republic of China. Partial moles are either diploid (46 chromosomes) or triploid (69 chromosomes). In 35 cases ploidy was measured by flow cytometry for nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid quantitation, indicating approximate chromosome number. On the basis of lymphocyte cultures, chromosome studies were carried out on 28 degreasers under different trichloroethylene load. Nine of these cases showed pathological rates of hypodiploid cells, but otherwise normal caryotypes; one case had a caryotype 47,XY,+mar (small metacentric extrachromosome). In these nine cases the trichloroethylene load, but not the exposure periods on the working place were significantly higher than in the control group.
