Introduction to the special issue on ''relations between gambling and alcohol use''.

It has long been recognized that gambling is an activity that is often combined with alcohol intake. Not only do the behaviors of drinking and gambling frequently co-occur, alcohol use disorders and pathological gambling are also commonly co-morbid conditions in both clinical and non-clinical samples. This article introduces a special issue of the Journal of Gambling Studies focusing on cutting edge findings on the relations between gambling and alcohol use behaviors and their associated disorders. We set the stage for the following series of six novel empirical papers and integrative commenta

Pathological gambling and personality disorders: an exploratory study with the IPDE.

This article describes the most frequent personality disorders related to pathological gambling. Participants included 50 pathological gamblers assessed with the IPDE, and 50 normative subjects from the general population with the same demographic features (age, sex, and socioeconomic level). Thirty-two percent of the clinical sample (vs. the 8% of the normative sample) showed at least one personality disorder. The most prevalent disorders were Borderline (16%), followed by Antisocial, Paranoid, Narcissistic, and Non-specified (8% each). Gamblers with personality disorders presented an average

Callous-unemotional traits, impulsivity, and emotional processing in adolescents with antisocial behavior problems.

Examined the emotional reactivity of adolescents with antisocial behavior problems using a lexical decision paradigm. Evidence from adult forensic samples indicates that psychopathic traits are associated with abnormalities in the processing of emotional stimuli. In an attempt to extend these findings earlier in development, this association was tested in a sample of adolescents (mean age = 16.01; SD = 1.32) referred to a diversion program for delinquent behavior. Emotional processing was assessed by comparing recognition time for emotional words, both positive and negative, to recognition tim

Perceived stress in kleptomania.

Kleptomania, defined as the recurrent failure to resist the impulse to steal, is associated with significant functional impairment. We hypothesized that people with kleptomania would report elevated levels of perceived stress. Sixteen subjects with DSM-IV kleptomania were administered the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and compared with 20 subjects with DSM-IV major depressive disorder (MDD). Change in PSS scores in response to treatment and the relationship between PSS scores and severity of kleptomania symptoms were analyzed. The subjects with kleptomania had a significantly greater mean basel

Psychopathological considerations on the relationship between bulimia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The relationship between eating disorders, impulse control disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder as part of a so-called 'obsessive-compulsive spectrum' is discussed, with particular emphasis on the relationship between eating disorders (particularly bulimia) and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The empirical studies on comorbidity, personality and familiarity are briefly reviewed. Both similarities and differences found in personality, body image, mental rumination, fears, physical exercises, rituals, impulses (bulimic binging and obsessive impulses) and purging behaviors of these patients

Is craving the source of compulsive drug use?

Compulsive drug use, which is typically portrayed as a defining quality of addictive behavior, has been described as a pattern of drug consumption that is stimulus bound, stereotyped, difficult to regulate and identified by a loss of control over intake. It is widely assumed that compulsive drug use is caused by drug craving. This assumption is supported by numerous findings of a general correspondence between measures of craving and drug-use behavior. A more focussed analysis of the available data, however, reveals that craving and drug use are not coupled to the degree required by the hypoth

Buying-shopping disorder-is there enough evidence to support its inclusion in ICD-11?

The phenomenon of buying-shopping disorder (BSD) was described over 100 years ago. Definitions of BSD refer to extreme preoccupation with shopping and buying, to impulses to purchase that are experienced as irresistible, and to recurrent maladaptive buying excesses that lead to distress and impairments. Efforts to stop BSD episodes are unsuccessful, despite the awareness of repeated break-downs in self-regulation, experiences of post-purchase guilt and regret, comorbid psychiatric disorders, reduced quality of life, familial discord, work impairment, financial problems, and other negative cons

Depression and impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: two sides of the same coin?

Depression and impulse control disorders (ICD) are two common neuropsychiatric features in Parkinson's disease (PD). Studies have revealed that both phenomena are associated with aberrations in ventral striatal dopamine signaling and concomitant dysfunction of the reward-related (limbic) cortico-striatal-thalamocortical (CSTC) circuit. Depression in PD seems associated with decreased activity in the limbic CSTC circuit, whereas ICD seem associated with increased limbic CSTC circuit activity, usually after commencing dopamine replacement therapy (DRT). Not all DRT using PD patients, however, de

The frontostriatal circuitry and behavioral complications in PD.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder traditionally associated with motor symptoms. However, a number of reports have described also deficits across a range of cognitive functions and behavioral complications during the progression of the disease. Here, we summarize recent observations that may help us to understand the underlying neuronal correlates of behavioral complications in PD. We will report findings from cutting-edge imaging technology which in the last few years have provided the bulk of information on the neurobiological underpinnings of non-motor symp

Impulse-control disorders in gilles de la tourette syndrome.

Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) are more common in clinic populations with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) than in the general population. The clinical phenomenology of ICDs differ between men with GTS (who tend to be externally impulsive) and women with GTS (who tend to be internally impulsive). This article reviews the relevant literature to-date on impulsivity in GTS, with special focus on intermittent, explosive disorder, self-injurious behavior, trichotillomania, and impulsive-compulsive sexual behavior. The medical and legal community should be aware of the full spectrum of organic

Increased medial orbitofrontal [18F]fluorodopa uptake in Parkinsonian impulse control disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) occur frequently in PD patients. METHODS: To investigate the possible involvement of the mesostriatal and mesolimbic monoaminergic function in ICDs associated with PD, we examined patients with (n = 10) and without (n = 10) ICDs using the brain [(18) F]fluorodopa PET. RESULTS: Patients with ICDs (e.g., pathological gambling, hypersexuality, and compulsive eating) showed up to 35% higher [(18) F]fluorodopa uptake in the medial orbitofrontal cortex, compared to control patients, but no differences in the striatum. The results remained significant al

Family history of suicide and personality.

The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of family history of suicidal behaviour on psychopathlogical features of inmates. A sample of 1,179 prisoners had a psychiatric interview including the Brown-Goodwin Assessment for Lifetime History of Aggression (BGLHA). Prisoners completed the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS), Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI), and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Prisoners with a family history of suicide were compared with prisoners without a family history of suicide on clinical and personality variables. Seventy of the 1,179 prisoners (5.9%

Impulse-control disorders in adolescent psychiatric inpatients: co-occurring disorders and sex differences.

OBJECTIVE: To examine in a sex-sensitive manner the frequencies, clinical correlates, and patterns of co-occurrence of impulse-control disorders in adolescent psychiatric inpatients. METHOD: 102 consecutive adolescents (54.9% females; mean age = 15.8 +/- 1.4 years) admitted to an inpatient psychiatric service for a variety of disorders were screened for impulse-control disorders from January through June 2006 using the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview. Subjects screening positive were blindly evaluated with structured clinical interviews. RESULTS: Forty-one patients (40.2%) met criter

Should the scope of addictive behaviors be broadened to include pathological gambling?

AIMS: Pathological gambling is currently considered an impulse control disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). This paper considers the prospect of reclassifying and broadening the substance use disorders to include non-pharmacological addictions such as pathological gambling. METHODS: Literature reviews were conducted on areas relevant to pathological gambling and its classification and similarities to substance use disorders. RESULTS: The diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling are outlined across the three versions of the DSM since its initial in

Application of the Transtheoretical Model to substance abuse: historical development and future directions.

As a growing literature has documented applications of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to substance abuse, the utility or futility of such an application has been debated widely. The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the TTM, and its conceptual and empirical applications to the field of substance abuse. This review focuses not only on the stage of change dimension of the TTM, but also the processes, decisional balance, and self-efficacy dimensions, which have received less attention in earlier reviews. Particular emphasis is placed on the measurement and conceptualization of the

Are impulse-control disorders related to bipolar disorder?

We reviewed available evidence regarding a possible relationship between impulse-control disorders (ICDs) and bipolar disorder. Studies examining the phenomenology, course, comorbidity, family history, biology, and treatment response of ICDs were compared with similar studies of bipolar disorder. Although no studies directly compare a cohort of ICD patients with a cohort of mood disorder patients, available data suggest that ICDs and bipolar disorder share a number of features: (1) phenomenologic similarities, including harmful, dangerous, or pleasurable behaviors, impulsivity, and similar aff

[Arson--a disorder of impulse control?].

Reviewing the literature the current knowledge about the motivational basis of arson is discussed. Fire-setters form a heterogenous group; they seem to commit their crimes for different reasons. Some of them are imbecile, some suicidal, and other showed autoaggressive behaviour in the past; sometimes a connection with sexual excitement can be observed. The criteria for the diagnosis "pyromania" used in the classification manuals DSM-III-R and ICD-10 are strict, in order to facilitate an operationalised diagnosis. Most of the fire-settings cannot be classified under this subcategory of "disorde

Kleptomania on the impulsive-compulsive spectrum. Clinical and therapeutic considerations for women.

The current literature regarding kleptomania (KM) is scarce, especially regarding treatment approaches and outcomes. The aims of the present study involved: (1) exploring characteristics of people with KM (with and without co-occurring eating disorders (EDs)); (2) considering KM along an impulsive-compulsive spectrum; and, (3) investigating treatment outcomes in a clinical sample of female patients with KM. The study sample included 150 female participants with either a diagnosis of KM only (n = 13), co-occurring KM and EDs (n = 71), or healthy control individuals (HCs) (n = 66). The KM-only g
