Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in a kidney donor associated with transient recipient DIC.

It has been controversial whether or not to accept kidneys for transplantation from donors with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). We report two recipients who received the kidneys from a donor with DIC following traumatic head injury. Despite evidence of donor kidney glomerular fibrin deposits and ongoing low-grade DIC in the recipients, which resolved after 5-7 days; both recipients did well suggesting that donors with DIC can be successfully used for renal transplantation.

Microscopic polyangiitis associated with marked systemic bleeding tendency caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation.

A 57-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of severe dyspnea due to pulmonary hemorrhage and rapidly progressive renal failure … , thrombin-antithrombin complex and plasmin-plasmin inhibitor complex led us to make a diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Complication of DIC was considered to have caused further deterioration in bleeding tendency due to MPA in the present case. The patient was treated with plasma exchange, hemodialysis, administration of corticosteroid including pulse therapy …

Early, fatal disseminated intravascular coagulation in a patient with 60 per cent burns.

A 23-year-old, previously fit and healthy young man was admitted to the West Midlands Regional Burns Unit at the Birmingham Accident Hospita … ractory hypotension and died anuric, 20 h later. The post-mortem examination showed the presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation and adult respiratory distress syndrome.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma, hemorrhagic shock, and disseminated intravascular coagulation in a newborn infant.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is a rare tumor of infancy that usually presents as an asymptomatic abdominal mass. A full-term newborn infant with an atypical variant of this neoplasm developed hemorrhagic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation. The stormy course was complicated by persistent fetal circulation and then the inability to withdraw ventilatory support due to the mass effect of the tumor. After the removal of the tumor at 10 days of age, transient conjugated hyperbilirubinemia developed. At 15 months of age, the infant was thriving without evidence of recurrence of the t…

[HELLP syndrome. Apropos of a series of 9 cases without disseminated intravascular coagulation].

The Hellp syndrome defined as the association of micro-angiopathic haemolytic anemia, hepatic cytolysis and thrombocytopenia, correspond to a severe form of gravidic toxemia, combined to manifestations of classic-pre-eclampsia. This retrospective study, conducted over 6 years, concerns 9 cases of Hellp syndrome, including 2 occurring during the immediate post-partum. Only cases where this biological triad was obvious and not associated with manifestations of disseminated intravascular coagulation, were considered in this study. In addition to the usual criteria of gravidic toxemia, the early c…

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome presenting as adult respiratory distress syndrome and disseminated intravascular coagulation.

We have reported a case of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) in a patient with historical and clinical features suggestive of heat stroke or sepsis and adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS and disseminated intravascular coagulation may be important, atypical signs encountered early in NMS and complicating its recognition.

Choroid plexus thrombosis and hemorrhage caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation in Down's syndrome.

This report concerns an unusual case of thrombosis and hemorrhage in the choroid plexus caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The case is of special interest because it occurred in a patient with Down's syndrome. Nevertheless, there is no causal relation between Down's syndrome and the choroid plexus lesion except that mongols are susceptible to infections that trigger DIC. The association of choroid plexus thrombosis-hemorrhage and Down's syndrome is coincidental and does not indicate a basic vascular defect.

Two cases of myomectomy complicated by intravascular hemolysis and renal failure: disseminated intravascular coagulation or hemolytic uremic syndrome?

OBJECTIVE: To present two cases of myomectomy complicated by intravascular hemolysis leading to acute renal failure and discuss the differen … as reduced renal function almost 2 years after the surgery. The differential diagnosis consisted of disseminated intravascular coagulation or hemolytic uremic syndrome. CONCLUSION(S): The etiology of thrombotic microangiopathy in these patients was unclear, but disruption and manipulation of fibroids during surgery may have led to the dissemination of pro-coagulant tissue factor conta …

Postpartum Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation: A Comprehensive Review of Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in the postpartum period is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication arising from various obstetric conditions, including postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), placental abruption, intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD), and amniotic fluid embolism. This review explores pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnostic challenges, and management strategies of postpartum DIC. The delicate balance of hemostasis during pregnancy predisposes women to thromboembolic events, which, when disrupted, may lead to rapid consumption of coagulation factors and subsequent c…

Maternal and Fetal Outcomes in Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation Cases Associated with Pregnancy Complications.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the pregnancy modified DIC score, which is applied in obstetric conditions where the risk of disseminated intravascular coagulation is high, and underlying disease, as well as its effect on the prognosis, was investigated. METHODS: Those with a DIC score ≥ 26 from obstetric conditions, such as obstetric bleeding, placental abruption, or preeclampsia/HELLP syndrome, which are at high risk of developing DIC, were included in the study. These patients were compared in terms of laboratory results, maternal morbidity/mortality, and neonatal outcomes, according …

Placental abruption leading to disseminated intravascular coagulation: a clinical case and short review.

We present the case of a primigravida with disseminated intravascular coagulation at 21 weeks' gestation. Furthermore, we performed a short review of the evidence-based management of the condition. The patient presented with pain and vaginal bleeding. Clinical examination, laboratory studies, and an abdominal ultrasound produced inconclusive results about the origin of her disseminated intravascular coagulation. She was transferred to a tertiary facility where blood and plasma product transfusions were performed, and further investigations revealed fetal demise caused by placental abruption as…

The Intricate Role of Non-Coding RNAs in Sepsis-Associated Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation.

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) is a type of tissue and organ dysregulation in sepsis, due mainly to the effect of the inflammation on the coagulation system. Unfortunately, the underlying molecular mechanisms that lead to this disorder are not fully understood. Moreover, current biomarkers for DIC, including biological and clinical parameters, generally provide a poor diagnosis and prognosis. In recent years, non-coding RNAs have been studied as promising and robust biomarkers for a variety of diseases. Thus, their potential in the diagnosis and prognosis of DIC should be further…
