Pace of alcohol drinking during in natural-environment drinking is associated with heightened alcohol-related reward and negative consequences in risky drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Sensitivity to alcohol's stimulating and rewarding properties is associated with increased risk for future heavy drinking and the development and maintenance of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Further, pace of alcohol consumption varies across individuals and affects level of intoxication and subjective alcohol responses. The present study used smartphone-based high-resolution ecological momentary assessment (HR-EMA) of a heavy drinking episode in young adult risky drinkers' natural environments to examine associations between pace of drinking and subjective responses to alcohol. Including drinking motives in multivariate models of acculturation and drinking behaviors among U.S. Hispanic college students: Does the story stay the same?

OBJECTIVE: Previous research with U.S. Hispanic college students tends to find that higher levels of acculturation are associated with elevated alcohol use and that these effects are likely to be stronger for women than men. It is now important to consider the extent to which these associations remain once theoretically proximal predictors of alcohol use (e.g., drinking motives) are accounted for in multivariate models. Thus, we examined how multiple domains of acculturation were associated with alcohol use, high intensity drinking, and negative alcohol consequences, and whether direct associa

Concerns About Sexual Assault in Undergraduate Students Are Greater in Women and Risky Drinking Contexts: relevance for Drinking Habits, Problems, and Decisions.

Background: This study investigated sex differences in concerns about unwanted sexual advances (CAUSA) in drinking contexts that varied in terms of the familiarity of people and location, and size of the party. Hypotheses tested were: women have more CAUSA than men, CAUSA are higher in unfamiliar large events than familiar small events for women more than men, and CAUSA will predict decisions to drink less especially in unfamiliar contexts. Methods: Drinking decisions were assessed in 569 (120 men, 449 women) undergraduate students in 8 randomly presented hypothetical scenarios varying along 3

Planned and unplanned drinking to get drunk: A registered report examining willingness, drinking motives, and protective behavioral strategies using ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: We examined alcohol use and consequences across five categories of same-day drinking intentions and willingness and tested whether same-day motives and protective strategies predicted differences in outcomes across categories of intentions and willingness. METHOD: In a 14-week ecological momentary assessment design, undergraduate student participants (N = 196) reported drinking intentions and behaviors over 13 surveys weekly (four morning surveys [Thursday through Sunday]; three midday, early, and late evening surveys [Thursday through Saturday]). On average, participants were 20.6

Drinking to Cope Mediates the Association between Dyadic Conflict and Drinking Behavior: A Study of Romantic Couples during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic spurred public health measures to reduce viral spread. Concurrently, increases in alcohol consumption and conflict in romantic partnerships were observed. Pre-pandemic research demonstrated a bidirectional association between couples' conflict and drinking. Recent research shows one's drinking motives (proximal predictors of drinking behavior) can influence another person's drinking in close relationships. It is possible that individuals are drinking to cope with distress following romantic conflict. The current study examined 348 cohabitating couples during the first loc

Historical variation in young adult binge drinking trajectories and its link to historical variation in social roles and minimum legal drinking age.

This study examines historical variation in age 18 to 26 binge drinking trajectories, focusing on differences in both levels of use and rates of change (growth) across cohorts of young adults over 3 decades. As part of the national Monitoring the Future Study, over 64,000 youths from the high school classes of 1976 to 2004 were surveyed at biennial intervals between ages 18 and 26. We found that, relative to past cohorts, recent cohorts both enter the 18 to 26 age band engaging in lower levels and exit the 18 to 26 age band engaging in higher levels of binge drinking. The reason for this rever

Is why we drink alcohol important when considering the potential public health benefit of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks? A cross-sectional study investigating associations between alcohol drinking motives and alcohol-free and low-alcohol drink consumption among adults in Great Britain.

INTRODUCTION: The UK has promoted increased availability of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks (no/lo, ≤1.2% alcohol by volume) as a public health strategy. To be effective, no/lo beverages must replace, and not supplement, standard alcoholic drinks. Emerging evidence suggests that the reasons people drink alcohol may be an important determinant of the potential public health impact of these drinks. This study aimed to determine whether alcohol drinking motives were associated with no/lo consumption after accounting for sociodemographic characteristics and alcohol consumption. METHODS: A cro

Fruit Juices as a Valuable Ingredient in Isotonic Drinks.

The growing interest in isotonic drinks translates into the need to develop formulations based on natural raw materials, which limit the use of synthetic additives while simultaneously increasing the bioactive value and sensory appeal of the products. The aim of this study was to develop innovative formulations for isotonic drinks based on natural fruit juices and to evaluate their physicochemical properties and sensory acceptance. Formulations containing 10-15% (v/v) fruit juice, with the addition of salt (0.13 g/100 mL) and organic sugar, were prepared, taking care to maintain osmolality wit

The Who and Where of Drinking: Examining the Role of Impulsivity.

OBJECTIVE: Impulsivity is thought to reflect a vulnerability to alcohol-related problems. Research suggests that impulsive individuals may engage in heavier alcohol use in stimulating environments. However, prior studies have not tested this assumption using an in vivo approach (i.e., daily diary). This study examined whether both high sensory stimulating contexts and heavy peer drinking contexts moderate the association between impulsivity and alcohol consumption. METHOD: Over a two-week period, participants (N = 102; 61.8% female) responded to daily notifications assessing their alcohol con

Development of the drinking and physical activity motives scale.

Objective: Research has shown a positive relationship between alcohol use and physical activity. Although little is known about the factors that give rise to this association, evidence suggests intrinsic and extrinsic motivations underlie it. Participants: University students (N = 1691, 79% female, Age: M = 20.36, SD = 1.89) who completed an online assessment. Methods: A literature review identified five putative motives underlying the alcohol use ↔ physical activity relation: (1) Work Hard, Play Hard (WHPH), (2) Stress, (3) Social, (4) Body Image (BI), and (5) Guilt, all domains assessed by t

Imaging of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Emergencies in Binge Drinking.

Excess alcohol consumption is a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality globally. The pattern of consumption of alcoholic beverages has changed in our society in the recent past, with binge drinking becoming more and more common, especially among young adults. Abdominal pain following alcohol consumption can be secondary to a wide range of pathologies, the treatment algorithm of which can range from medical supportive treatment to more invasive life-saving procedures such as transarterial embolization and emergency laparotomy. Correct diagnosis, differentiation among these conditi

Association of Lithium in Drinking Water With the Incidence of Dementia.

IMPORTANCE: Results from animal and human studies suggest that lithium in therapeutic doses may improve learning and memory and modify the risk of developing dementia. Additional preliminary studies suggest that subtherapeutic levels, including microlevels of lithium, may influence human cognition. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the incidence of dementia in the general population covaries with long-term exposure to microlevels of lithium in drinking water. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This Danish nationwide, population-based, nested case-control study examined longitudinal, individu

Energy Drinks and atrial fibrillation in young adults.

The present paper evaluates the association between Energy Drinks (EDs) and occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in young people. Data from three clinical cases of AF after EDs consumption are reported. All patients presented with palpitations, nausea and anxiety. ECG showed AF with high ventricular response (135-170 bpm range frequency). Anamnestic record reported a high consumption of EDs during the previous 8 h from the onset of AF. In one case ED was associated with a moderate quantity of alcohol. Patients were successfully cardioverted both spontaneously and after pharmacological treatm

Applications of the water drinking test in glaucoma management.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) peaks and means have been considered important factors for glaucoma onset and progression. However, peak IOP detection depends only on appropriated IOP checks at office visits, whereas the mean IOP requires longitudinal IOP data collection and may be affected by the interval between visits. Also, IOP peak assessment is necessary to verify if the peak pressure of a given patient is in target range, to evaluate glaucoma suspect risk, the efficacy of hypotensive drugs and to detect early loss of IOP control. The water-drinking test has gained significant attention in re

Screening for at-risk drinking behavior in trauma patients.

CONTEXT: A blood alcohol level above 0 g/dL is found in up to 50% of patients presenting with traumatic injuries. The presence of alcohol in the blood not only increases the risk of traumatic injury, but it is also associated with worse outcomes and trauma recidivism. In light of these risks, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma advocates screening for at-risk drinking. Although many institutions use blood alcohol levels to determine at-risk drinking in trauma patients, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) offers a cheap and easy alternative. Few direct compari
