Effect of immunosuppression on newcastle disease virus persistence in ducks with different immune status.

This study was carried out to verify the possibility that ducks are sources of Newcastle disease (ND) virus infection for chickens in mixed flocks. Immunosuppressed (IS) and non immunosuppressed (NIS) birds, at three different antibody levels (medium, low and absent) were used; the titres having been induced through vaccination, and Immunosuppression done using dexamethazone. Each of the 3 respective groups was further divided into 2 groups of about 12 ducks each: one challenged with velogenic ND virus; the other not challenged. Selected ducks from all groups had their antibody titres monitore…

The pathogenesis of low pathogenicity H7 avian influenza viruses in chickens, ducks and turkeys.

BACKGROUND: Avian influenza (AI) viruses infect numerous avian species, and low pathogenicity (LP) AI viruses of the H7 subtype are typically reported to produce mild or subclinical infections in both wild aquatic birds and domestic poultry. However relatively little work has been done to compare LPAI viruses from different avian species for their ability to cause disease in domestic poultry under the same conditions. In this study twelve H7 LPAI virus isolates from North America were each evaluated for their comparative pathogenesis in chickens, ducks, and turkeys. RESULTS: All 12 isolates w…

Monitoring the health and production of household Jinding ducks on Hatia Island of Bangladesh.

Duck rearing is an important component of sustainable living in poor rural communities, especially as a source of subsistence. A study was conducted on 118 households (N = 1,373 Jinding ducks, Anas platyrhynchus) from December 2002 to February 2004 on Hatia Island in Bangladesh with the aim of identifying the factors that limit the health and production of Jinding ducks. Overall duck mortality was 29.3%, with disease (19.7%) being a more significant factor than predation (9.6%; p = 0.001). Duck mortality also varied significantly among study zones (p < 0.001). Common diseases were duck plague …

Acid-base disturbance and ventilatory response to changes in plasma osmolality in Pekin ducks.

The effects of acute changes in plasma osmolality on blood acid-base status and ventilation were investigated in the Pekin duck, Anas platyrhynchos. Hyperosmolality due to intravenous infusion of hypertonic NaCl or sucrose caused a prolonged acidosis (so-called dilution acidosis), which was attributable to a decrease in estimated strong ion difference due to a fall in the plasma [Na+]:[Cl-] ratio. Ventilation did not increase in response to the acidosis, and was actually depressed in some birds. PaCO2 increased by 3.5 +/- 1.5 Torr and PaO2 decreased by 4 +/- 2 Torr over the 2 h experimental pe

Cecal microbiota and metabolomic profiles associated with residual feed intake divergence in laying ducks.

Feed efficiency is an important determinant of productivity in laying ducks, but the cecal microbiota and metabolomic profiles associated with residual feed intake (RFI) divergence remain unclear. In this study, 767 laying ducks were phenotyped for RFI, and cecal samples from low-RFI (LRFI) and high-RFI (HRFI) ducks (n = 20 per group) were subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing and LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics. LRFI ducks consumed 25.5% less feed and showed lower RFI and feed conversion ratio than HRFI ducks; however, they also exhibited higher average daily egg mass and egg production r…

Curcumin ameliorates aflatoxin B1-induced brain toxicity in ducks by attenuating inflammation and PANoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a highly toxic mycotoxin that poses significant risks to poultry health, causing neurotoxicity and economic losses. However, the precise mechanisms underlying AFB1-induced brain injury, particularly regarding the role of PANoptosis-a coordinated cell death pathway-remain largely unexplored. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of AFB1-induced neurotoxicity in ducks, focusing on the inflammatory response and PANoptosis, and to evaluate the potential neuroprotective effects of curcumin. METHODOLOGY: A duck model of AFB1 intoxication was establi…

Preliminary evidence of polyvinyl chloride microplastics inducing ferroptosis in the cerebral cortex of ducks.

Ferroptosis, a type of regulated cell death, is frequently observed in mammalian brain cortical injuries and diseases linked to iron metabolism disorders. Recent evidence suggests that microplastic exposure may trigger such ferroptosis-related pathologies. However, the mechanism and impact of ferroptosis-induced cerebral cortex damage in waterfowl due to microplastic exposure remain unclear. In this study, Muscovy ducks were divided into three groups receiving: pure water, 1 mg·L⁻¹ polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs), or 10 mg·L⁻¹ PVC-MPs for two months. This study suggests that PVC-MPs…

Comparative Genomic Characterization of Riemerella anatipestifer Isolates from Chickens, Ducks, and Geese in China.

The increasing detection of Riemerella anatipestifer in chickens poses severe challenges to the poultry industry. However, the genomic differences among R. anatipestifer isolates from different poultry hosts remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated host-associated genomic differences among 158 R. anatipestifer strains isolated from different hosts in China, using pan-genome, phylogenetic, virulence factor, and antimicrobial resistance analyses. The core-genome phylogeny showed no apparent separation according to host, sampling period, or geographic origin. Conserved genes including groE

Genetic diversity and pathogenicity of goose astrovirus genotype 2 in geese, ducks and chickens.

Goose astrovirus genotype 2 (GAstV-2), a member of the Avastrovirus (AAstV) genus, is an important emerging pathogen closely associated with … art, liver, and kidney of the inoculated geese. Notably, GAstV-2 could infect and replicate in both ducks and chickens without prior adaptation, resulting in histopathological lesions to the heart, liver and kidney of the birds. These findings enrich our understanding of the GAstV-2 prevalence, clarify the evolutionary dynamics of this virus, and highli …

Multi-omics reveals gut microbiota-mediated environmental adaptation in Mallards and domesticated Shaoxing ducks.

Gut microbiota remodeling is a critical component of the domestication syndrome. However, the structural and functional consequences of domestication on gut microbiomes in ducks remain poorly understood. Understanding how domestication and associated ecological transitions influence gut microbial communities can shed light on host adaptation mechanisms. We performed integrated metagenomic and metabolomic analyses of the ileal and cecal microbiota from Mallards and Shaoxing ducks-two ecotypes of Anas platyrhynchos representing wild and domesticated lineages-to investigate microbial community st…

Consistent changes in muscle metabolism underlie dive performance across multiple lineages of diving ducks.

Diving animals must sustain high activity with limited O2 stores to successfully capture prey. Studies suggest that increasing body O2 stores supports breath-hold diving, but less is known about metabolic specializations that underlie underwater locomotion. We measured maximal activities of 10 key enzymes in locomotory muscles (gastrocnemius and pectoralis) to identify biochemical changes associated with diving in pathways of oxidative and substrate-level phosphorylation and compared them across three groups of ducks-the longest diving sea ducks (eight spp.), the mid-tier diving pochards (thre…

Underwater hearing in sea ducks with applications for reducing gillnet bycatch through acoustic deterrence.

As diving foragers, sea ducks are vulnerable to underwater anthropogenic activity, including ships, underwater construction, seismic surveys and gillnet fisheries. Bycatch in gillnets is a contributing source of mortality for sea ducks, killing hundreds of thousands of individuals annually. We researched underwater hearing in sea duck species to increase knowledge of underwater avian acoustic sensitivity and to assist with possible development of gillnet bycatch mitigation strategies that include auditory deterrent devices. We used both psychoacoustic and electrophysiological techniques to inv…

Identification of different critical embryonic periods to modify egg incubation temperature in mule ducks.

Egg incubation of mule ducks, mainly used for fatty liver production, is one of the critical phases in this sector. Based on hatching rate, the best incubation parameters have already been well described for poultry, but the literature on ducks is lacking. In this study, we tested different incubation conditions by varying two important factors, temperature and relative humidity, in mule ducks. These variations were applied at different periods during embryogenesis in order to measure the impact of environmental disturbances on different zootechnical performances. The temperature was increased…
