Thirty-day outcomes after pediatric microtia and anotia reconstruction: A CPT-coded national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Microtia reconstruction requires balancing short-term safety, operative burden, staging, donor-site morbidity, esthetic goals, hearing needs, and long-term revision risk. However, national data describing early postoperative outcomes across Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)-defined reconstructive phenotypes remain limited. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric data from 2012 through 2024. Children with congenital microtia or anotia who underwent external-ear reconstruction we

Severe relapsing polychondritis occurring after ear piercing.

We describe a case of relapsing polychondritis with laryngo-tracheal involvement, occurring after ear piercing in a 39-year-old woman. Polychondritis was clearly time-related to ear piercing. This association draws attention to the risk of relapsing polychondritis during body art practices with cartilage trauma.

Evidence for articular cartilage regeneration in MRL/MpJ mice.

OBJECTIVE: A major clinical problem in Orthopaedics is the repair of traumatic articular cartilage lesions. The MRL/MpJ strain of mice has the remarkable ability to regenerate ear hole punch wounds seamlessly including the scarless replacement of multiple tissues. The objective of this study was to assess whether articular cartilage defects repair or regenerate in the MRL/MpJ 'healer' strain of mice. METHOD: Full thickness and partial thickness lesions were introduced into trochlear groove articular cartilage of MRL/MpJ and C57Bl/6 mice, a control strain that does not undergo ear hole regener

A Novel Advantage to Microtia Reconstruction Utilizing Ear Molding: A Case Report of Goldenhar Syndrome's Clinical Presentation and Surgical Reconstruction.

This case report describes a unique approach to reconstructing microtia in a patient with microtia and craniofacial microsomia. Microtia is a congenital outer ear deformity that can vary in severity, from minor abnormalities to complete absence of the ear. The traditional methods for microtia reconstruction are autologous reconstruction using the patient's rib cartilage or alloplastic reconstruction using porous polyethylene. Autologous reconstruction typically begins around age six to 10 years of age when the rib cage is sufficiently large enough, while alloplastic reconstruction may be perfo

Reducing the morbidity involved in harvesting autogenous rib cartilage.

Although the use of autogenous cartilage is the gold standard in auricular reconstruction, its main disadvantage is the morbidity due to harvesting the cartilage. This includes postoperative pain, visible scar, and possibly asymmetry and reduced stability of the thorax. To reduce all of these drawbacks, we describe some modifications that reduce pain to a low tolerable level, hide the scar invisibly in the submammary fold in females, and induce regeneration as well reestablish stability of the rib defect.

A new animal model for relapsing polychondritis, induced by cartilage matrix protein (matrilin-1).

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) differs from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in that primarily cartilage outside diarthrodial joints is affected. The disease usually involves trachea, nose, and outer ears. To investigate whether the tissue distribution of RP may be explained by a specific immune response, we immunized rats with cartilage matrix protein (matrilin-1), a protein predominantly expressed in tracheal cartilage. After 2-3 weeks, some rats developed a severe inspiratory stridor. They had swollen noses and/or epistaxis, but showed neither joint nor outer ear affection. The inflammatory lesions

Exploring Aesthetic Outcomes and Complications in Auricular Reconstruction Utilising Autologous Cartilage: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

Auricular reconstruction remains a challenging procedure, requiring a high degree of manual dexterity and attention to detail in order to reconstruct the complex three-dimensional geometry of the ear successfully. Most techniques will rely on autologous cartilage for auricular framework fabrication, carrying a risk of donor and recipient site morbidity. The aim of this report is to investigate the complications and aesthetic outcomes associated with autologous cartilage harvest in auricular reconstruction. A systematic review protocol was registered with the International Prospective Register

Anterior atticoantrostomy for cholesteatoma surgery.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the long-term results of anterior atticoantrostomy in adult patients with cholesteatoma. METHODS: A total of 83 ears in 78 patients were operated on by the anterior atticoantrostomy technique, supported by a periosteal flap, between 1991 and 2002. RESULTS: Cholesteatoma recurred in only 4 ears (4.8%). In the 79 ears without recurrence, re-perforation was observed in 3 ears (3.8%), and retraction pockets developed in the attic of 5 ears (6.3%), 2 of which needed ventilation tubes. Absorption or migration of cartilage grafts was not seen in any of the patien

Etretinate-induced malformation of the first two branchial arches: differential staining and microdissection study of embryonic cartilage.

Malformations of the cranial base, temporal bone and middle ear were induced in the offspring of Sprague-Dawley rats by a single intraperitoneal injection of 10-30 mg/kg etretinate (Tigasone) at days 8.5-10.5 of gestation. By differential staining of the embryonic craniofacial cartilage and bone, and microdissection of the otomandibular complex, the induced malformations were studied specifically. Defective formations of Meckel's cartilage and the cartilaginous skull base were found to be prominent features of the malformation. The malformation included defective middle-ear ossicles; especiall

The application and progress of tissue engineering and biomaterial scaffolds for total auricular reconstruction in microtia.

Microtia is a congenital deformity of the ear with an incidence of about 0.8-4.2 per 10,000 births. Total auricular reconstruction is the preferred treatment of microtia at present, and one of the core technologies is the preparation of cartilage scaffolds. Autologous costal cartilage is recognized as the best material source for constructing scaffold platforms. However, costal cartilage harvest can lead to donor-site injuries such as pneumothorax, postoperative pain, chest wall scar and deformity. Therefore, with the need of alternative to autologous cartilage, in vitro and in vivo studies of

Tissue engineering of human ear pinna.

Auricular deformities (Microtia) can cause physical, social as well as psychological impacts on a patient's wellbeing. Biofabrication of a complex structure such as ear pinna is not precise with currently available techniques. These limitations can be overcome with the help of tissue engineering. In this article, the authors presented molding and three dimensional (3D) printing to generate a flexible, human size ear pinna. The decellularization of goat ear cartilage protocol and bioink alkaline digestion protocol was followed to yield complete removal of all cellular components without changin…

Relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare multisystem autoimmune disease of unknown origin characterized by recurrent episodes of inflammation and progressive destruction of cartilaginous tissues. Elastic cartilage of the ears and nose, hyaline cartilage of peripheral joints, vertebral fibrocartilage and tracheobronchial cartilage, as well as proteoglycan-rich structures of the eye, heart, blood vessels or inner ear may all be affected. In most patients RP manifests in a fluctuating but progressive course which eventually results in a significant shortening of life expectancy. The relatively unc
