[The brain drain: theoretical framework and hypotheses].

"This article studies the 'brain drain' issue from the sociological perspective. It analyzes the various reasons why students from developing countries go to North American and European universities and why they decide either to return or not to return to their own country after graduation. The author...concludes that, although there are political, socioeconomic and academic factors, one's decision to return or not to return to one's country depends mainly on individual aspirations (personal and cultural development) and collective aspirations (perceived possibilities of playing a constructive

Economic intimate partner violence and its co-occurrence with physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence among youth: Mixed-methods findings from Nairobi, Kenya.

Partner economic abuse is an understudied form of intimate partner violence (IPV) that is increasingly considered to coincide with physical and/or sexual IPV (i.e., contact IPV), and can hinder help-seeking. This overlap is not well-understood, and measurement for economic IPV remains limited across global settings. This mixed methods study examines 1) measurement performance of an economic IPV scale; 2) prevalence of current economic IPV and contact IPV; 3) demographic and economic agency associations with groupings of IPV experience (mutually exclusive experience, co-experience, and none); a

Behavioral outcome of very preterm children at 5 years of age: Prognostic utility of brain tissue volumes at term-equivalent-age, perinatal, and environmental factors.

OBJECTIVE: Prematurity is associated with a high risk of long-term behavioral problems. This study aimed to assess the prognostic utility of volumetric brain data at term-equivalent-age (TEA), clinical perinatal factors, and parental social economic risk in the prediction of the behavioral outcome at 5 years in a cohort of very preterm infants (VPT, <32 gestational weeks). METHODS: T2-weighted magnetic resonance brain images of 80 VPT children were acquired at TEA and automatically segmented into cortical gray matter, deep subcortical gray matter, white matter (WM), cerebellum (CB), and cereb

The ethnic gap in mobility: a comparison of Russian, Somali and Kurdish origin migrants and the general Finnish population.

BACKGROUND: Many ethnic minority populations have poorer health than the general population. However, there is limited knowledge on the possible ethnic gap in physical mobility. We aim to examine the prevalence of mobility limitations in working-age Russian, Somali and Kurdish origin migrants in comparison to the general population in Finland. We also determine whether the association between ethnic group and mobility limitation remains after taking into account socio-economic and health-related factors. METHODS: We used data from the Finnish Migrant Health and Wellbeing Study (Maamu) and the

Overcrowded housing: One of a constellation of vulnerabilities for child sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Effective prevention of child abuse depends on an understanding of factors associated with the abuse. Increased risk of child sexual abuse has been associated with parental substance use and adverse socio-economic factors such as living in poverty and parental unemployment. This study investigated overcrowding as a potential socio-economic risk factor in child sexual abuse taking into account other socio-economic, child and parental factors. METHOD: This study used de-identified linked data from health and child protection data collections for the cohort of children born in Wester…

Children hospitalised with four common viral diseases showed epidemiological differences but few socio-economic variations.

AIM: This study explored the differences in demographic and socio-economic factors between children hospitalised due to four common viral infections. METHODS: Demographic data were obtained from Statistics Sweden on >3000 children admitted to Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital in 2009-2014 with rotavirus, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or chickenpox. We compared demographic and socio-economic factors between case groups using logistic regression with rotavirus cases as reference. RESULTS: There were differences in the median age at admission; RSV cases were younger (0.4 years)…

Socio-cultural factors in adolescent septic illicit abortions in Ilorin, Nigeria.

One hundred and ninety-two adolescents (aged 12-18 years) with septic illicit abortions were interviewed to assess socio-cultural factors associated with illegally induced septic abortions at Ilorin, Nigeria. They were mostly unmarried schoolgirls who were ignorant of contraception. Inadequate parental supervision contributed largely to unplanned pregnancies, while poor economic state of these patients influenced the occurrence of illegal septic abortions. Wide-spread availability of an acceptable family-life education, with improved socio-economic state of the adolescents would most probably

How culturally wise psychological interventions can help reduce poverty.

Poverty is characterized by multidimensional economic, social, and psychological constraints that undermine people's agency to pursue new opportunities and shape their life outcomes. How can interventions best support the agency of low-income individuals and, in so doing, boost poverty-reduction efforts? We theorize and find that agency interventions are effective when designed to be "culturally wise," i.e., attuned to the model of agency predominant in a cultural context. Focusing on low-income women in rural Niger, Study 1 finds that local mental models of economic success primarily reflect

State-level economic uncertainty and cardiovascular disease deaths: evidence from the United States.

The relationship between economic recessions and cardiovascular mortality has been widely explored. However, there is limited evidence on whether economic uncertainty alone is linked to cardiovascular disease deaths. This study examines the association between economic uncertainty and mortality from diseases of the circulatory system in the United States. We obtained monthly state-level mortality data from 2008 to 2017 and used indices capturing economic uncertainty from national/international sources and local sources. Panel data modelling was used to account for unobserved time-invariant dif

Relationship of family formation characteristics with unsafe abortion: is it confounded by women's socio-economic status? - A case-control study from Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Literature shows that choice for unsafe abortion is often driven by poverty. However, factors related to the family formation behaviour of women are also implied as determinants of this decision. This study assessed which family formation characteristics of women are associated with the risk of unsafe abortion, without being confounded by their low socio-economic status among Sri Lankan women admitted to hospital following post-abortion complications. METHODS: An unmatched case-control study was conducted in nine hospitals in eight districts in Sri Lanka among 171 women with post-

Globalization and social distance: Multilevel analysis of attitudes toward immigrants in the European Union.

Attitudes toward immigrants can, to a large extent, be determined by certain macro contextual factors. This paper tests a number of proposed hypotheses to illustrate patterns of influence generated by economic and social globalization on perceived social distance relative to immigrants. The European Union (EU) constitutes an ideal study case as its Member States vary in exposure to globalization and attract immigrants from different countries of origin. We conduct a multilevel analysis combining individual level variables from Eurobarometer's recent dataset collected in 2017 and country-level

Using an autologistic regression model to identify spatial risk factors and spatial risk patterns of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Mainland China.

BACKGROUND: There have been large-scale outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Mainland China over the last decade. These events varied greatly across the country. It is necessary to identify the spatial risk factors and spatial distribution patterns of HFMD for public health control and prevention. Climate risk factors associated with HFMD occurrence have been recognized. However, few studies discussed the socio-economic determinants of HFMD risk at a space scale. METHODS: HFMD records in Mainland China in May 2008 were collected. Both climate and socio-economic factors were sel…

Interaction of Human Behavioral Factors Shapes the Transmission of Arboviruses by Aedes and Culex Mosquitoes.

Arboviruses, i.e., viruses transmitted by blood-sucking arthropods, trigger significant global epidemics. Over the past 20 years, the frequency of the (re-)emergence of these pathogens, particularly those transmitted by Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, has dramatically increased. Therefore, understanding how human behavior is modulating population exposure to these viruses is of particular importance. This synthesis explores human behavioral factors driving human exposure to arboviruses, focusing on household surroundings, socio-economic status, human activities, and demographic factors. Household

Unequal footprint drivers: A pooled Bewley approach to energy and trade dynamics in OECD.

Rising carbon emissions and increasing socio-economic inequality have fueled debates on climate policies that reconcile environmental sustainability with social equity. This study develops a dynamic general equilibrium (DGE) model that distinguishes between non-Ricardian households-those that are liquidity-constrained and rely on current income-and Ricardian households-those that own capital and optimize intertemporally. By integrating various energy consumption patterns, including non-renewable and renewable sources, the model identifies key drivers of CO2 emissions inequality among emitting

"Mother's milk": Is there a social reversal in breastfeeding practices along with economic development?

Previous studies suggest that macro- and micro-level factors jointly influence breastfeeding (BF) practices, but empirical evidence on the dynamics of such interactions along with the process of a country's economic development remains limited. Based on 42 Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) conducted in 15 Asian countries with a large time window (1990-2017), we thus test the existence of a reversal in the association between household wealth and BF practices throughout the development process. Four BF indicators (early initiation of BF, exclusive BF, continued BF at one year and two years) are

What's new in atopic eczema? An analysis of systematic reviews published in 2017. Part 2: epidemiology, aetiology and risk factors.

This article forms part of a series of annual updates that summarizes the evidence base for atopic eczema (AE). It provides a summary of key findings from 28 systematic reviews that were published or indexed during 2017, and focuses on the epidemiology, aetiology and risk factors of AE. AE is the largest single contributor to morbidity associated with skin disease worldwide, once mortality has been excluded. There is a high prevalence of sleep disturbance in individuals with AE and they take more sick leave than controls. While there is a lack of skin bacterial diversity in patients with AE, t

Malnutrition in children under five in Zimbabwe: effect of socioeconomic factors and disease.

Using data from the Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (1988), this study investigates the factors that determine the nutritional status of children under five years of age. Several sociocultural, economic, and demographic variables were selected for the study. These independent variables were regressed against three proxy measures of malnutrition: height-for-age, weight-for-age, and weight-for-height. The results show that the nutritional status of a child is determined by a variety of factors that are biological, social, cultural, and economic in nature, namely, birth status, birth weigh

Factors affecting carbon dioxide emissions for sustainable development goals - New insights into six asian developed countries.

The worldwide economic scene faces the dual challenges of rising sea levels and escalating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Environmental contamination impedes sustainable growth, increasing the demand for sustainable energy resources as a fundamental aspect of sustainable economies. The present research uses an analytical model to examine the elements influencing carbon dioxide output in six economically developed Asian nations, intending to assist in realizing the UNSDG- United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The manuscript applies the fixed effect model- FEM and the random effects ap
