Degradation process of lead chromate in paintings by Vincent van Gogh studied by means of synchrotron X-ray spectromicroscopy and related methods. 1. Artificially aged model samples.

On several paintings by artists of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th Century a darkening of the original yellow areas, painted with the chrome yellow pigment (PbCrO(4), PbCrO(4)·xPbSO(4), or PbCrO(4)·xPbO) is observed. The most famous of these are the various Sunflowers paintings Vincent van Gogh made during his career. In the first part of this work, we attempt to elucidate the degradation process of chrome yellow by studying artificially aged model samples. In view of the very thin (1-3 μm) alteration layers that are formed, high lateral resolution spectroscopic metho

Bothriocestus claviceps (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidae) in pike in southwestern France (Teleostei: Esocidae): molecular evidence.

Bothriocestus claviceps (Goeze, 1782) is a cestode parasite infecting several fish species. One of its principal definitive hosts is the European eel Anguilla anguilla. The parasite is widely distributed across Europe and has been reported from numerous countries, such as Poland, Czechia, and France. In southern France, the European eel co-occurs with the Aquitanian pike, Esox aquitanicus, an endemic species. This pike is threatened by human activities and hybridization with the introduced Northern pike Esox lucius and is therefore classified as "vulnerable" on the French Red List of the Inter

Laying the foundations for selective-fish guidance using electricity: multi-species response to pulsed direct currents.

To develop effective technology that employs electric fields to simultaneously guide valued freshwater fish whilst limiting the range expansion of undesirable invasive species, there is a need to quantify the electrosensitivity of multiple families. This experimental study quantified the electrosensitivity of two carp species that, in UK, are invasive (grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and common carp, Cyprinus carpio) and compared the values with those previously obtained for adult European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a species of conservation concern in Europe. Electric field strengths (V/cm

[Profile of a new calcitonin: carbocalcitonin-(Asu1,7) E-CT].

(Asu1,7) E-CT (carbocalcitonin-elcatonin) is the aminoasuberic analogue of eel calcitonin differing from the natural hormone in that an ethylene bridge replaces the disulphide bridge in position 1-7. This modification preserves the conformation of natural calcitonin but enhances the physical, chemical and biological stability of the molecule. This in its turn facilitates maximum purification of the product as well as enhancing its resistance to degradation both in vitro and in vivo. The specific activity of carbocalcitonin is equivalent to 5000 U.MRC/mg and it possesses all the pharmacological

Medical grand rounds. West Virginia University Health Sciences Center. Bites and stings. Part 1. Spiders.

Most animals can bite or sting. In narrowing the kingdom down to those that harm humans, the field still is vast. It would be interesting to explore the rich variety of pathology produced in us by moray eels, lionfish, sea urchins, jellyfish, sting rays, fire ants, kissing bugs, flies, lice, mosquitoes, ticks, mites, fleas, puss caterpillars, centipedes, snakes, dogs and cats, camels, and myriad other creatures including homo sapiens (not a trivial biter)--but for this grand rounds, the topic will simply be spiders (Part 1), bees and vespid (Part 2). Vespids are the wasps, yellow jackets and h

Analysis of volatile halogenated organic compounds in fish.

A method for the analysis of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in biological samples has been developed. Extraction efficiencies for various C1 and C2 halocarbons were found to be in the range of 63--82%, and recoveries were fairly good. The detection limits lie in the sub-ppb range (0.1--1 ppb). The method has been used to analyse fish samples from both unpolluted and polluted areas in Norway. The compounds most frequently found were chloroform, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in concentrations ranging from 10--1000 ppb. From one area, corresponding water and fish samples were analy

History of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation-Update for the 21st Century.

OBJECTIVE: To present a history of the development of peripheral nerve stimulation. METHODS: Narrative literature review. RESULTS: Peripheral nerve stimulation has a history stretching from Scribonius Largus and eels in Mesopotamia to Michael Farady's discovery in London, the German-English physician Julius Althaus's application of electricity to a peripheral nerve, the sensational "Electreat" in the United States, to the application by Wall and Sweet of the gate theory proposed by Melzack and Wall to specialized neurosurgeons. CONCLUSIONS: This is now a modern field in clinical neuroscienc

The first fatal case of Vibrio vulnificus infection in Denmark.

Vibrio vulnificus can cause severe infections in humans and persons with preexisting liver disorders are especially at risk. In this paper we report what is to our knowledge the first fatal case of V. vulnificus infection in Denmark. The patient was a 68-year-old man with a history of chronic lymphatic leukemia and hepatic cirrhosis. Physicians should be aware of the clinical manifestations of this disease and should be especially attentive to patients at risk of acquiring the infection if there has been possible exposure to V. vulnificus by contact with seawater or contaminated material such

Comparative Assessment of Methods for Isolation and Imaging of Extracellular Vesicles.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) from defined cell sources are emerging as potential vehicles with therapeutic efficacy. The EV and non-EV secretome of individual cell populations may also be used as a measure of cell identity or state. EV attributes and composition may therefore be useful in defining the "fit-for-purpose" quality of cell populations for drug testing, biological models, and cell therapy products. As such, methods for cost-effective isolation and rigorous characterization of EVs are needed. This work aims to evaluate current methods and establish effective and potentially improved

Spatial and temporal trends of mercury in the aquatic food web of the lower Penobscot River, Maine, USA, affected by a chlor-alkali plant.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in aquatic biota, including fish and shellfish, were measured over the period 2006-2012 in the lower Penobscot River and upper estuary (Maine, USA). The Penobscot is a system contaminated with Hg by a chlor-alkali plant that operated from 1967 to 2000, discharging 6-12 tons of mercury into the river. Mercury levels in aquatic biota were highest at sites downstream of the chlor-alkali plant and spatial trends were similar to those of sediments. Mean total Hg concentrations in fish muscle (adjusted for size or age) in the most affected areas were 521 (480, 566; 95% CI

[Venomous and poisonous animals. IV. Envenomations by venomous aquatic vertebrates].

Epidemiological information on marine envenomation is generally less extensive in Europe than in tropical regions where these injuries are more severe and the need for medical advice is more frequent. For these reasons use of regional Poison Control Centers in the area where the injury occurs must be encouraged. The purpose of this review is to describe envenomation by bony fish (lion fish, stone fish, and catfish), cartilaginous fish (stingrays and poisonous sharks), or other venomous aquatic vertebrates (moray-eels and marine snakes). Understanding of these envenomation syndromes is importan

[Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae--a cause of erysipeloid and endocarditis].

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is widespread among many species of animals including fish. Erysipeloid is the most common infection caused by this bacterium in man; systemic infection, with endocarditis, is rare. Most of the affected patients risk exposure to the organism at work. Two patients with E. rhusiopathiae infections are described; one with erysipeloid after slaughtering a deer, the other with fatal endocarditis after gutting an eel. Erysipeloid may be confused with "seal finger", but this disease probably has a different microbial etiology and requires different antibiotic treatment.

The hemagglutinin-like proteins of basal vertebrate influenza-like viruses exhibit sialic-acid receptor binding disparity and their structural bases.

In 2018, two novel influenza-like virus genomes were first identified in basal vertebrates: the Asiatic toads (Bufo gargarizans) and spiny eels (Mastacembelus aculeatus). Their hemagglutinin (HA) proteins exhibit remarkably low amino acid sequences homology (23.0% and 42.8%, respectively) compared to influenza B virus (IBV), their closest canonical influenza virus relative. This study revealed that the Asiatic toad influenza-like virus HA (tHA) demonstrates dual receptor specificity, bound both α2-3 (avian-type) and α2-6 (human-type) sialic acid (SA) receptors, whereas the spiny eel influenza-

Marking of olfactory axons of fishes by intravital staining with Procion brilliant yellow.

Olfactory axons of fishes can be traced after vital staining of the olfactory surface with the fluorescent dye Procion brilliant yellow M 4-RAN. Following selective accumulation by the receptor dendrites and perikarya the dye migrates intra-axonally over distances of more than 200 micrometer. Fluorescence microscope observation of formaldehyde fixed and paraffin sectioned preparations of the olfactory organ demonstrate clearly the system of intraepithelial axons and their first order bundles running toward the olfactory nerve.

Topotactic anion exchange in Bi2Te3: layer-specific substitution and its plasmonic effects.

We demonstrate the site-selective transformation of Bi2Te3, with two crystallographically inequivalent anions, into ordered Bi2Te2Se by anion exchange, in which Se exclusively replaces the octahedrally coordinated middle layer of Te in the quintuple-layer structure, preserving both the structure and morphology. Cross-sectional HAADF-STEM imaging confirms this site-specific Se incorporation. First-principles calculations support the thermodynamic stability of the ordered Bi2Te2Se configuration, with the kinetics also favouring the replacement of the central Te with Se. Low-loss EELS reveals a b

Synthesis of carbon-nitrogen nanostructures by hot isostatic pressure apparatus and their field emission properties.

Carbon-nitrogen (CN) nanofibers were synthesized in argon-nitrogen gas mixture at 75 MPa by high isostatic pressure (HIP) apparatus using a graphite resistive heater. The CN nanofibers were grown in random with the diameter of about 200 nm and the length over 5 microm. The structures obtained can be divided bamboo-like, spring-like, and bead necklace-like CN nanofibers. The nitrogen content of up to 8.4% was found in CN nanofibers by EELS analysis. Field emission results showed that the density of field emitters and the field enhancement factors changed by surface treatments and that CN nanofi

Photolysis-Driven, Room Temperature Filling of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes.

An alternative process for opening and filling single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based on UV photolysis is proposed. The filling of SWCNTs with MoCl5 and iodine were successfully achieved at room temperature after subjecting SWCNTs with MoCl5 or I₂ dissolved in chloroform to UV light for 6 hours. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) were used to characterise both the encapsulated materials and the host tube. A mechanism for the related opening and filling events is proposed, along with a possible yet unprecedented structure for the encapsulate

Characterization of trimeric acetylcholinesterase from a legume plant, Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb.

We recently identified plant acetylcholinesterases (E.C.3.1.1.7; AChEs) homologous to the AChE purified from a monocotyledon, maize, that are distinct from the animal AChE family. In this study, we purified, cloned and characterized an AChE from a dicotyledon, siratro. The full-length cDNA of siratro AChE is 1,441 nucleotides, encoding a 382-residue protein that includes a signal peptide. This AChE is a disulfide-linked 125-kDa homotrimer consisting of 41-42 kDa subunits, in contrast to the maize AChE, which exists as a mixture of disulfide and non-covalently linked 88-kDa homodimers. The plan
