PURPOSE: Chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint dislocation is treated by surgical and nonsurgical techniques described in the literature. However, these techniques have some complications noted in the literature. Recently, the autologous blood injection in temporomandibular joint technique has been applied to treat chronic temporomandibular joint dislocation. However, to date, there has been no study that describes the histopathologic effects of autologous blood injection within the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathologic effects of autologous blood injection

Osteoarthritis is well established to be a whole joint disease, and previous studies have found degenerative changes in periarticular tendons around osteoarthritic joints. Thus, we aimed to assess whether potential periarticular adaptations (patellar tendon) are related to intraarticular changes (tibial cartilage) at material-level. As they are both connected to the tibia, we explored the relationships between patellar tendon and tibial cartilage viscoelastic properties obtained from eight osteoarthritic cadaver knees. Six patellar tendon regions and six to eight tibial cartilage samples per k

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease affecting articular cartilage and the underlying bone, resulting from many biological and mechanical interacting factors which change the extracellular matrix (ECM) and cells and lead to increasing levels of cartilage degeneration, like softening, fibrillation, ulceration and cartilage loss. The early diagnosis of the disease is fundamental to prevent pain, further tissue degeneration and reduce hospital costs. Although morphological modifications can be detected by modern non-invasive diagnostic techniques, they may not be evident in the early stages of OA. Th

Tenascin-C (TN-C) is a hexabrachion-shaped extracellular matrix (ECM) protein which has very restricted expression in normal musculoskeletal tissues, but is expressed in large quantities in these tissues during embryogenesis as well as during regenerative and healing processes. TN-C is an elastic protein which has a number of binding sites for other extracellular matrix proteins as well as for cell membrane adhesion receptors. In addition, it can be stretched to several times its resting length, the ability of which is attributed to the stretch-induced unfolding of its fibronectin type III dom

The material properties of normal cadaveric human cartilage in the ankle mortice (tibiotalar articulation) were evaluated to determine a possible etiologic mechanism of cartilage injury of the ankle when an obvious traumatic episode is not present. Using an automated indentation apparatus and the biphasic creep indentation methodology, creep indentation experiments were performed in five sites in the distal tibia, one site in the distal fibula, and eight sites in the proximal talus of 14 human ankles (seven pairs). Results showed significant differences in the mechanical properties of specific

This study aims to investigate the interactions appearing when the beta-2-glycoprotein-1 binds to a lipid bilayer. The inter- and intra-molecular forces acting between the two macromolecular systems have been investigated using a molecular dynamics simulation method. The importance of water bridges has also been addressed. Additionally, the viscoelastic response of the bilayer has been studied. In detail, the (saturated-chain) 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and (unsaturated-chain) 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (POPE) bilayers have been chosen to test

Specialized roles for the different components of the retrodiscal tissues have been previously postulated. This study compared the histologic features of the retrodiscal tissues of temporomandibular joints, taken from human cadavers, in the open and closed position; it was concluded that the primary role of these components was to provide a volumetric compensatory mechanism for pressure equilibration. This mechanism was still active in joints that demonstrated disc displacement and degenerative changes. Elastin was found in the upper and lower strata of the retrodiscal tissues, as well as in t

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical changes in articular cartilage are associated with the onset of osteoarthritis. We developed an optical coherence tomography-based strain rate tomography method: stress relaxation optical coherence straingraphy (SR-OCSA). The purpose of this study was to establish an approach for measuring mechanical properties of articular cartilage using SR-OCSA, and to investigate the distribution of viscoelastic properties of articular cartilage in early osteoarthritis.
METHODS: Anterior cruciate ligament transection surgery was performed on the left knees of 8-9-month-old New Ze

Poor mechanical properties hinder the application of hydrogels in cartilage tissue engineering. In this study, macroporous interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogels of gelatin and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were fabricated for use as a functional biomaterial to support chondrocyte culture. The IPN structure enhanced mechanical properties, while the macroporous structure facilitated cell-cell interactions. The hydrogels had pore sizes around 80 μm with favorable interconnectivity, reduced volume swelling ratios, and nearly unchanged weight swelling ratios with increasing gelatin ratios. More sign

Motivated by the conceptual framework of multi-scale biomechanics, this narrative review highlights recent major advances with a focus on gait and joint kinematics, then tissue-level mechanics, cell mechanics and mechanotransduction, matrix mechanics, and finally the nanoscale mechanics of matrix macromolecules. A literature review was conducted from January 2014 to April 2015 using PubMed to identify major developments in mechanics related to osteoarthritis (OA). Studies of knee adduction, flexion, rotation, and contact mechanics have extended our understanding of medial compartment loading.

Developing durable hydrogels for cartilage replacement remains a critical challenge. UV-crosslinkable hydrogels from methacrylated silk fibroin (SFMA) or polyacrylamide (PAM) have shown great potential in biomedical applications. However, either pure SFMA or PAM hydrogels lack adequate strength for structural applications in vivo. Herein, we introduced SFMA as a biomacromolecular linker and biocompatible component into the PAM-based polymer that was in situ polymerized under UV irradiation within 10 s. The prepared SFMA-AM hydrogel consisting of extensive covalent and hydrophobic interactions

Growth and remodeling of biological tissues involves mass exchanges between soluble building blocks in the tissue's interstitial fluid and the various constituents of cells and the extracellular matrix. As the content of these various constituents evolves with growth, associated material properties, such as the elastic modulus of the extracellular matrix, may similarly evolve. Therefore, growth theories may be formulated by accounting for the evolution of tissue composition over time in response to various biological and mechanical triggers. This approach has been the foundation of classical b

Microtia, along with trauma, represents one of the main causes of external ear malformation. Different clinical techniques were developed for the reconstruction of the auricle, but they all have some drawbacks. This work is focused on the development of an innovative 3D porous scaffold, printed by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) and based on laser-scanned images of the healthy contralateral ear of the patient. The scaffold was printed using polycaprolactone (PCL) and thermoplastic polyether urethane (TPU) to mimic the components of the cartilage and adipose tissue, respectively. After the opt

INTRODUCTION: gonarthrosis is a degenerative disease, whose loss of cartilage causes changes in the adjacent bone and its response produces deformations and attempts at regeneration. In 1934 Meyer and Palmer isolated bovine vitreous humor, a polysaccharide called hyaluronic acid, which has the property of visco-elasticity. Today, multiple procedures performed in orthopedics are known, in order to limit the degenerative process that this entails.
OBJECTIVE: to know the use and efficacy of hyaluronic acid in the patient requiring knee arthroscopy, evaluating the evolution of the patient using t

Abnormalities in the ankle contact pressure are related to the onset of osteoarthritis. In vivo measurements are not possible with currently available techniques, so computational methods such as the finite element analysis (FEA) are often used instead. The discrete element method (DEM), a computationally efficient alternative to time-consuming FEA, has also been used to predict the joint contact pressure. It describes the articular cartilage as a bed of independent springs, assuming a linearly elastic behaviour and absence of relative motion between the bones. In this study, we present the ex

OBJECTIVES: In the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), tramadol, a common weak opioid, has become popular due to its effectiveness in inhibition of pain. In the present study, we aimed to explore the effect of tramadol on subchondral bone, especially changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties.
METHODS: A mouse model of OA was established in the present study by destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM). A vehicle or drug was administered for 4 weeks. Specimens were harvested and analyzed radiologically and histologically using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), scanning elect

The main goal of this work is to clarify and quantify, by means of mathematical analysis, the role of structural viscoelasticity in the biomechanical response of deformable porous media with incompressible constituents to sudden changes in external applied loads. Models of deformable porous media with incompressible constituents are often utilized to describe the behavior of biological tissues, such as cartilages, bones and engineered tissue scaffolds, where viscoelastic properties may change with age, disease or by design. Here, for the first time, we show that the fluid velocity within the m

The patellar tendon autograft is widely used in cruciate ligament replacement. Knowledge of the basic processes involved in graft healing and of factors regulating the healing process is still limited. The patellar tendon and cruciate ligament are morphologically and biochemically distinct, which reflects the different mechanical forces acting on them. Based on morphological studies in posterior cruciate ligament replacement in a sheep model, the patellar tendon autograft undergoes a remarkable transformation process during healing. Distinct healing phases similar to those in would healing can

On the basis of 63 Salter pelvic osteotomies which were performed in 57 patients with congenital dislocation and subluxation of the hip between 1970 and 1986 at the Orthopaedic University Clinic of Vienna, we tried to work out the reasons for the rate of failures of 29% in our material. The mean age at operation was 4.1 years (1.5-18), that at follow up 15.7 years (4.6-28). We based our assessments on the clinical and radiological criteria of the Commission for the Study of Hip Dysplasia of the German Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. The number of failures at follow up (hip value III
