[Unilateral paralysis of the vocal fold: correlation between laryngoscopy and electromyography].

From a clinical point of view, unilateral vocal fold paresis means that one of the vocal folds shows reduced mobility. Etiology may be mechanical or supranuclear, but in most cases it is a partial peripheral neurogenic lesion in the muscles innervated by one of the recurrent laryngeal nerves. On the one hand, a retrospective analysis was made of 71 cases with laryngoscopically reduced mobility of one vocal fold: 58 patients had electromyographic signs of partial denervation; 13 had normal electromyographic activity. Possible explanations are mechanical factors, paradoxical reinnervation, or ce

[Electromyography of the external muscles of the larynx in the combined diagnosis of hypokinetic dysphonia].

Bioelectric activity of elevators and depressor of the thyroid cartilage were studied in 135 patients with hypokinetic dysphonia versus 30 healthy subjects. At the primary diagnosis and in controls this activity for the inferior muscles exceeded that for the superior ones 1.2-1.4-fold. One year after the diagnosis the superior muscles were 1.2-1.6-fold more active, whereas in later terms both activities correlated or the increase was less than 1.2-fold. Basing on the studies, early clinical signs of functional dysphonias are suggested promoting more precise diagnosis and decision on the voice

[Electromyography of the larynx in the diagnosis of spontaneous or post-thyroidectomy laryngeal paralysis].

Electromyographic assessment (EMG) of the larynx is very important for diagnostic and prognostic in cases of unmoving larynx: definition that authors like better than larynx palsie or recurrent nerve palsie because it is impossible to know why the larynx do not move in many cases (15f for 20 cases in the experience of the authors). EMG must be realized on several muscles and not only on the vocal fold muscle. It is necessary to realize several EMG to have a good follow up. If we have the proof that it is a case of definitive recurrent palsie the authors think that it is now, indication of nerv

Detecting lower motor neuron dysfunction of the pharynx and larynx with electromyography.

This study assessed the utility of clinical electromyography (EMG) for detecting lower motor neuron (LMN) or upper motor neuron (UMN) dysfunction affecting the intrinsic muscles of the larynx and pharynx. Twenty-nine subjects were examined; their clinical diagnoses included perioperative nerve injury, cerebral infarction, and lateral medullary infarction. Resting activity, motor unit action potential (MUAP) morphology, and MUAP recruitment were evaluated in every case. Medical records (excluding EMG data) were analyzed for clinical evidence of LMN or UMN dysfunction in the intrinsic muscles of…

[The significance of electromyography in detecting myopathies in functional disorders of the thyroid gland].

This paper reviews the value and limits of electrophysiological techniques for the detection of myopathies in disorders of thyroid gland. The electromyographic patterns are described and the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the myopathies are discussed. The establishment of a relationship between the described electrophysiological patterns and the clinical, morphological and biochemical findings is attempted.

[Electromyography and spinal evoked potentials in cauda equina syndrome of dogs].

In order to investigate usefulness of electrodiagnostic methods in Cauda Equina-Compression, 26 dogs with this disease were subjected to electromyography and spinal evoked potentials. 16 normal dogs served as controls. It was found that--after stimulation of the Nn.tibialis, peronaeus, pudendus and coccygeales and recording at the lumbosacral junction--latencies and nerve-conduction velocities were largely normal. However the amplitudes were decreased and--depending on the severity of the compression--the morphology of the potentials was altered although considerable standard deviations were o…

Laryngeal electromyography: a useful technique for the investigation of vocal cord palsy.

Percutaneous needle laryngeal electromyography was used in 22 patients with an established vocal cord palsy of non-laryngological cause. Recordings of action potentials from both vocalis and cricothyroid muscles produced expected results in 8 patients with skull base lesions. In 6 patients with known lesions below the clavicles, ipsilateral cricothyroid activity was found to be normal despite the vocal cord lying in the lateral (or cadaveric) position. In 2 patients electromyography helped establish the site of the lesion. Eight patients with idiopathic cord palsies showed varying cricothyroid…

Postoperative continence assessed by electromyography of the external sphincter in anorectal malformations.

Voluntary faecal continence after corrective surgery for anorectal malformations was assessed via electromyography (EMG) of the external sphincter muscle in 20 patients with anorectal malformations. Six normal children served as controls. Function of the external sphincter in patients with high type anomaly was disturbed from the points of tonic activity, inflation reflex, and activity during further rectal filling. Patients with a positive inflation reflex, regardless of the type of anorectal malformation, had good Kelly scores. Phasic activity was observed in patients with high-type anomaly,…

[Electromyography in function disorders of the cricothyroid muscle following trauma and strumectomy].

32 patients with a disturbed function of the cricothyroid muscle were examined electromyographically and some also electroneurographically. Thyroid surgery had preceded in 22 patients and a traumatic lesion in 10 patients. Clinical observation showed that all patients suffered from an instability and lowering of the speaking voice as well as a reduction of vocal range. This was caused by a deficient tension of the vocal cords due to an insufficiently innervated cricothyroid muscle. In healthy subjects a continuous muscle activity of the cricothyroid muscle can be noted even in a resting positi

Air cystometrography and sphincter electromyography in patients with bladder outlet obstruction.

38 patients with infravesical obstruction secondary to benign prostatic hypertrophy had CO2 cystometrography (CMG) and sphincter electromyography (EMG) at onset of retension and 6 weeks after intermittent bladder drainage. Neurological diseases were excluded in these patients. Three patterns of CMG tracings were obtained and were called, normal, 'compensating' and 'decompensating' on the basis of the volume: pressure ratio of the curves. By strict definition, no abnormal detrusor contractions were seen in any of these patients who also all had normal sphincter electromyography. It is questiona…

Functional myotome mapping via triggered electromyography during intraoperative cervical rootlet stimulation.

Myotome mapping provides essential anatomical and physiological information in neurosurgical practice. However, current cervical myotome charts are based largely on heterogeneous sources with considerable inconsistency and limited electrophysiological validation. This study aimed to describe a cervical functional myotome map based on amplitude-based triggered electromyography (tEMG) during intraoperative rootlet stimulation in the intradural space in patients undergoing cervical spinal tumor surgery. We retrospectively analyzed 20 patients who underwent cervical spinal tumor resection with int…

Intradural contractions: spinal lipoma surgery with equivocal electromyography activity. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Intradural spinal lipomas are a form of closed dysraphism and a frequent cause of tethered cord. Although usually adipocyte predominant, rare lesions may contain additional histological elements that can yield unexpected intraoperative behavior. OBSERVATIONS: A 13-year-old boy presented with progressive right foot deformity, distal weakness, gait limitation, and a low conus at S1-2 with a large terminal lipoma on spine MRI. He underwent detethering with debulking and L5 osteoplastic laminoplasty under intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). During microsurgical dissection, a pink b

Geometry of orofacial neuromuscular signals: speech articulation decoding using surface electromyography.

Objective. In this article, we present data and methods for decoding speech articulations using surface electromyogram (EMG) signals. EMG-based speech neuroprostheses offer a promising approach for restoring audible speech in individuals who have lost the ability to speak intelligibly due to laryngectomy, neuromuscular diseases, stroke, or trauma-induced damage (e.g. from radiotherapy) to the speech articulators.Approach.To achieve this, we collect EMG signals from the face, jaw, and neck as subjects articulate speech, and we perform EMG-to-speech translation.Main results. Our findings reveal th

Surface electromyography-based biofeedback can facilitate recovery from total knee arthroplasty.

Knee osteoarthritis is among the most prevalent chronic diseases. Total knee arthroplasty is a common solution that effectively addresses the continued structural degeneration of the articular cartilage. However, effective physical therapy is critical for recovery. Despite participating in physical therapy, many patients fail to recover. This study investigated the potential efficacy of a behaviorally informed approach to surface electromyographic biofeedback following total knee arthroplasty relative to the clinical standard, neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The surface electromyographic

Research on Lower Limb Step Speed Recognition Method Based on Electromyography.

Wearable exoskeletons play an important role in people's lives, such as helping stroke and amputation patients to carry out rehabilitation training and so on. How to make the exoskeleton accurately judge the human action intention is the basic requirement to ensure that it can complete the corresponding task. Traditional exoskeleton control signals include pressure values, joint angles and acceleration values, which can only reflect the current motion information of the human lower limbs and cannot be used to predict motion. The electromyography (EMG) signal always occurs before a certain move…

High-Density Surface Electromyography for Swallowing Evaluation in Post-Radiation Dysphagia.

OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) for swallowing assessment by comparing the quantitative parameters and topographic patterns of HD-sEMG between post-irradiated patients and healthy individuals. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers and ten post-irradiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients were recruited. 96-channel HD-sEMG was recorded although each participant consumed different consistencies of food (thin and thick liquid, puree, congee, and soft rice). Dynamic topography was generated from the root mean square (RM…

Useless hand syndrome: Diagnostic role of electromyography and nerve conduction studies.

BACKGROUND: Useless hand syndrome (UHS) refers to clumsiness of complex finger movements and loss of manual dexterity due to cervical cord lesions, often associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). This condition may represent the first demyelinating event in MS or may occur in a patient with pre-existing MS. METHODS: We report 3 patients with UHS, 2 of whom had not been previously diagnosed with MS. The history and physical examinations, EMG/NCV studies of the arms, and radiological findings are presented. RESULTS: Presenting symptoms in all 3 cases included paresthesia and difficulty with man
