Negative split pacing-finishing the second half of a race faster than the first-is a hallmark of elite endurance performance and a key indicator of physiological control, fatigue resistance, and strategic pacing literacy. Rather than being an inherent talent, it represents a trainable skill integrating physiological, cognitive, and behavioral regulation. This mini review synthesizes evidence from performance analyses, physiological studies, and coaching practice to outline how negative split capacity can be systematically developed. We summarize training foundations, mesocycle design, and moni

Repeated hypoxemia in obstructive sleep apnea patients increases sympathetic activity, thereby promoting arterial hypertension. Elite breath-holding divers are exposed to similar apneic episodes and hypoxemia. We hypothesized that trained divers would have increased resting sympathetic activity and blood pressure, as well as an excessive sympathetic nervous system response to hypercapnia. We recruited 11 experienced divers and 9 control subjects. During the diving season preceding the study, divers participated in 7.3 +/- 1.2 diving fish-catching competitions and 76.4 +/- 14.6 apnea training s

HIV-specific CD8+ T cells play a central role in immune control of adult HIV, but their contribution in pediatric infection is less well characterized. Previously, we identified a group of ART-naive children with persistently undetectable plasma viremia, termed "elite controllers," and a second group who achieved aviremia only transiently. To investigate the mechanisms of failure to maintain aviremia, we characterized in three transient aviremic individuals (TAs), each of whom expressed the disease-protective HLA-B*81:01, longitudinal HIV-specific T-cell activity, and viral sequences. In two T…

The physiological determinants of respiratory function in elite athletes with hearing impairment remain unexplored. It is unknown whether sport-specific adaptations or the unique neurophysiology of deafness primarily govern their pulmonary performance, and if standard spirometric criteria are applicable. This study aimed to conduct the first comprehensive multivariate characterization of anthropometric and training-related predictors of pulmonary function in elite deaf athletes, comparing disciplines with contrasting physiological demands. Thirty-three elite male deaf athletes (track-and-field

BACKGROUND: On-pitch rehabilitation is key to supporting return to sport in elite soccer (football). The control-chaos continuum (CCC) guides practitioners through the sport-specific components of return to sport. There is a need to update the framework with recent research in injury neurophysiology, soccer performance, and coaching science. CLINICAL QUESTION: How do practitioners integrate the insights from injury neurophysiology, soccer performance, and coaching science discussed in part 1 of this 2-part series into an updated version of the CCC, to enhance the planning and execution of on-p

Elite athletes in varied sports typically combine ergogenic strategies in the hope of enhancing physiological responses and competitive performance, but the scientific evidence for such practices is very scarce. The peculiar characteristics of speed skating contribute to impede blood flow and exacerbate deoxygenation in the lower limbs (especially the right leg). We investigated whether combining preconditioning strategies could modify muscular oxygenation and improve performance in that sport. Using a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design, seven male elite long-track

The CD8+ T cell response to the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii varies dramatically between mouse strains, resulting in stark differences in control of the parasite. Protection in BALB/c mice can be attributed to an unusually strong and protective MHC-1 Ld-restricted CD8+ T cell response directed against a peptide derived from the parasite antigen GRA6. The MHC-1 Ld molecule has limited peptide binding compared to conventional MHC molecules such as Kb or Db, which correlates with polymorphisms associated with "elite control" of HIV in humans. To investigate the link between the unusua

Democracy often fails to meet its ideals, and these failures may be made worse by electoral institutions. Unwanted outcomes include elite polarization, unresponsive representatives, and the ability of a faction of voters to gain power at the expense of the majority. Various reforms have been proposed to address these problems, but their effectiveness is difficult to predict against a backdrop of complex interactions. Here we outline a path for systems-level modeling to help understand and optimize repairs to US democracy. Following the tradition of engineering and biology, models of systems in

Introduction Soft tennis involves repetitive, high-intensity trunk rotation during strokes and serves, with high popularity among Japanese high school boys. The sport's biomechanical demands place cumulative stress on the lumbar spine, and a high prevalence of low back pain (LBP) has been reported, particularly in elite-level athletes. Previous studies identified factors such as hip rotation range of motion (ROM), trunk strength, and training load as LBP-related in rotational sports. However, foundational insights into the structural characteristics of the lumbar region in this population rema
