Evaluation of cerebral maturation by visual and quantitative analysis of resting electroencephalography in children with primary nocturnal enuresis.

This study was undertaken to evaluate resting electroencephalographic (EEG) changes and their relations to cerebral maturation in children with primary nocturnal enuresis. Cerebral maturation is known to be important in the pathogenesis of this disorder. Twenty-five right-handed patients with primary nocturnal enuresis, aged 6 to 14 years, and 23 age- and sex-matched healthy children were included in this cross-sectional case-control study. The abnormalities detected using such techniques as hemispheral asymmetry, regional differences, and hyperventilation response in addition to visual and qu…

BDNF and NGF gene polymorphisms and urine BDNF-NGF levels in children with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis.

INTRODUCTION: The pathophysiology and genetic influences in nocturnal enuresis have not been fully elucidated. Delayed neuronal maturation has been suggested as a pathogenetic mechanism in primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE). Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) are neurotrophins affecting maturation of the nervous system. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate BDNF and NGF gene polymorphisms and urine levels of BDNF and NGF in children with PMNE as a first time. STUDY DESIGN: The single-nucleotide polymorphisms of BDNF…

Periodic limb movements during sleep are associated with a lower quality of life in children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis.

UNLABELLED: The study investigates whether cortical arousals and periodic limb movements during sleep are related to daytime psychological functioning in children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis with associated nocturnal polyuria. Psychological functioning is evaluated on five domains: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder-inattentive problems, quality of life, internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and executive functioning. This multi-informant (parents, teachers, and children) and multi-method study included overnight video-polysomnography, questionnaires, and neuropsych…

[The diagnosis and treatment of ureteral enuresis in a girl aged 14 with unexpected explanation of the cause of the disorder--a case report].

In our case report we present the course of diagnosis and treatment of primary urinary incontinence in a girl aged 14. In abdominal ultrasound examination we found features of double renal pelvis on the left side. Intravenous urography confirmed that anatomical variant. Moreover it gave the suggestion of duplicated left ureter. Regarding the clinical data and the results of ultrasonography and urography, we suspected that the symptoms might be connected with the ectopic orifice of one from the left ureters, probably that one associated with the upper renal pelvis. We managed to find this ectop

Nocturia, nocturnal polyuria, and nocturnal enuresis in adults: What we know and what we do not know.

Nocturia is defined as the nocturnal frequency of one or more voiding episodes per night. It increases with aging and has an impact on sleep quality and the risks of falling and mortality. Nocturia disorder involves nighttime frequency, nocturnal polyuria, and nocturnal enuresis. In older adults with nocturia disorder, multiple factors could contribute to nocturia severity and characteristics, including poor sleep quality, lower urinary tract dysfunction, and excessive fluid output. Several nonurological medical diseases have been found to result in nocturia, such as hypertension, congestive h…

Functional connectivity of thalamus in children with primary nocturnal enuresis: results from a resting-state fMRI study.

Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is characterized by a low cure rate and a high reoccurrence rate, since its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Based on the recent studies that thalamus plays an important role in waking up a sleeping person, here we further investigate the functional connectivity (FC) information between thalamus and other brain regions, in order to make better understanding of the PNE's pathogenesis. In this study, we enrolled 30 children diagnosed with PNE and 30 typically developing children that are age and sex matched, the thalamus-based FC estimates were extracted at …
