Epidemiology of Pancreatic Cancer: Global Trends, Etiology and Risk Factors.

Pancreatic cancer is the seventh leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. However, its toll is higher in more developed countries. Reasons for vast differences in mortality rates of pancreatic cancer are not completely clear yet, but it may be due to lack of appropriate diagnosis, treatment and cataloging of cancer cases. Because patients seldom exhibit symptoms until an advanced stage of the disease, pancreatic cancer remains one of the most lethal malignant neoplasms that caused 432,242 new deaths in 2018 (GLOBOCAN 2018 estimates). Globally, 458,918 new cases of pancreatic cancer ha

Osteonecrosis in pediatric cancer survivors: Epidemiology, risk factors, and treatment.

Several treatment regimens for childhood malignancies have been associated with the development of osteonecrosis, including radiation therapy, glucocorticoid medications, immunotherapy (including anti-angiogenic agents), and several chemotherapeutic agents. Adolescents older than 10 years are at greatest risk of developing osteonecrosis within 1 year of initiating therapy. Screening with magnetic resonance imaging in this high-risk population may be a useful method for detecting osteonecrosis. Surgery may be required for lesions that have progressed substantially despite nonoperative intervent

Changing Trends in the Epidemiology and Risk Factors of Pneumocystis Pneumonia in Spain.

Objective: The information about the epidemiology of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) in Europe is scarce, and in Spain there are only data nationwide on patients with HIV infection. This study has been carried out with the aim of knowing in our country the current epidemiological spectrum and the risk factors of PcP. Methods: Observational, descriptive transversal study that included all patients admitted in Spain with diagnosis upon discharge of PcP registered in the National Health System's Hospital Discharge Records Database of Spain, between 2008 and 2012. Results: Four thousand five hundred

Cryptosporidium infection in rural Gambian children: Epidemiology and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is a major pathogen associated with diarrheal disease in young children. We studied Cryptosporidium diarrhea in children enrolled in the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) in rural Gambia. METHODS: We recruited children <5 years of age with moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) for 3 years (2008-2010), and children with either MSD or less severe diarrhea (LSD) for one year (November 2011-November 2012) at sentinel health centers. One or more randomly selected controls were matched to each case. Stool samples were tested to identify Cryptosporidium by immunoassay.

Update on the epidemiology, risk factors and disease outcomes of Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease (BD) may be regarded as a polygenic autoinflammatory disease although adaptive immune system has also been implicated in pathogenesis. Different classification criteria sets exist for BD, including the new "International Criteria for BD." The pooled prevalence of BD was calculated as 10.3 per 100,000 population globally. BD is common along the Silk Road, including Turkey. Male sex and early onset are associated with a more severe disease course. For the follow-up of BD, there are five disease activity scales, one disease severity scale, and one QOL scale.

Epidemiology of gastric cancer: global trends, risk factors and prevention.

In most animals, the brain makes behavioral decisions that are transmitted by descending neurons to the nerve cord circuitry that produces behaviors. In insects, only a few descending neurons have been associated with specific behaviors. To explore how descending neurons control an insect's movements, we developed a novel method to systematically assay the behavioral effects of activating individual neurons on freely behaving terrestrial D. melanogaster. We calculated a two-dimensional representation of the entire behavior space explored by these flies, and we associated descending neurons wit

Update on the epidemiology, risk factors, and disease outcomes of axial spondyloarthritis.

Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is the prototype of a class of a rheumatic chronic inflammatory disease named spondyloarthritis (SpA). The prevalence of axSpA ranges between 0.1% and 1.4% globally, hence showing geographic differences that can be explained mostly by the prevalence of the HLA-B27 antigen. However, not many studies have evaluated the incidence of this disease. Inflammation may be initiated in the enthesis as a consequence of the action of IL-23, which can activate resident T cells. The elevated expression of IL-23 has been explained by three hypotheses: the presence of HLA-B27,

The Epidemiological Influence of Climatic Factors on Shigellosis Incidence Rates in Korea.

Research has shown the effects of climatic factors on shigellosis; however, no previous study has evaluated climatic effects in regions with a winter seasonality of shigellosis incidence. We examined the effects of temperature and precipitation on shigellosis incidence in Korea from 2002⁻2010. The incidence of shigellosis was calculated based on data from the Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC, Cheongju, Korea), and a generalized additive model (GAM) was used to analyze the associations between the incidence and climatic factors. The annual incidence rate of shigellosis was

Risk factors and molecular epidemiology of Acinetobacter baumannii bacteremia in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Acinetobacter baumannii infections in neonates are not uncommon but rarely studied. METHODS: Clinical and molecular epidemiology of 40 patients with A. baumannii bacteremia in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of a medical center from 2004 to 2014 was analyzed. RESULTS: Multi-drug resistance was found in only 3 isolates (7.5%). Sequence types (STs) of A. baumannii defined by multilocus sequencing typing were diverse, and 72.4% identified isolates belonged to novel STs. Majority of the isolates were susceptible to antibiotics tested. Among the 3 imipenem-resistant A. bauma

Epidemiological risk factors associated with inflammatory breast cancer subtypes.

BACKGROUND: In this single-institution case-control study, we identified risk factors associated with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) subtypes based on staining of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and expression of human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2neu) to determine distinct etiologic pathways. METHODS: We identified 224 women with IBC and 396 cancer-free women seen at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between breast cancer risk factors and the IBC tum

Epidemiological Characteristics and Risk Factors of Dengue Infection in Korean Travelers.

Dengue viral infection has rapidly spread around the world in recent decades. In Korea, autochthonous cases of dengue fever have not been confirmed yet. However, imported dengue cases have been increased since 2001. The risk of developing severe dengue in Korean has been increased by the accumulation of past-infected persons with residual antibodies to dengue virus and the remarkable growth of traveling to endemic countries in Southeast Asia. Notably, most of imported dengue cases were identified from July to December, suggesting that traveling during rainy season of Southeast Asia is consider

Epidemiology and risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined as the presence of hepatic steatosis, determined by either imaging or histology, in the absence of secondary causes of hepatic fat accumulation. Nonalcoholic fatty liver is defined as the presence of hepatic steatosis with no evidence of hepatocellular injury in the form of ballooning of the hepatocytes or fibrosis. NASH is defined as the presence of hepatic steatosis and inflammation with hepatocyte injury (ballooning) with or without fibrosis. Although initial epidemiological studies have focused on its prevalence in the Western countri
