Radiographic disappearance of a previously ossified epiphyseal center may occur during the acute episode of septic arthritis, or during the healing phase after adequate treatment. The fact that the cartilage remains normal suggests that reparative revascularization, rather than enzymatic dissolution of bone and cartilage by the infecting organism, is responsible for the disappearance of the ossification center.

A tentative classification of Perthes' disease according to the extent of epiphyseal and metaphyseal involvement in lateral radiographs of the hip was applied to 61 hips in 55 patients. Forty-four hips were treated by containment (Tachjian's trilateral socket hip abduction orthosis) and 17 hips were treated surgically either by intertrochanteric or sub-trochanteric osteotomy. We report a rare case of complete proximal epiphyses (so-called pseudoepiphyses) of metacarpal and metatarsal bones in a human. These phenomena were seen in both the hands and feet of a seven-year-old girl undergoing medical examination for pain in the right foot. During medical treatment, X-ray photographs of the hands and feet were taken. Each metacarpal and metatarsal bone except for the first metacarpal bones had supernumerary epiphyses (complete pseudoepiphyses) at the nonepiphyseal end of these bones. This is a rare case even for an experienced orthopaedic surgeon.

We reviewed 75 pin retrievals after in situ pinning of 35 children with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Four types of pins were used. Ten pins in 8 hips could not be removed because of pin breakage or stripping. Our failure rate was significantly related to pin type and size (p less than 0.039). As compared with the expected values using the chi-square method of analysis, the noncannulated large steel pins and cannulated steel pin groups had fewer failures (p less than 0.001) as compared with the cannulated titanium and noncannulated small steel pin groups. Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are increasingly being used off label in pediatrics. Long-term safety data are limited, and serious toxicities unique to pediatrics may emerge. Ten members of a family suffered from slipped capital femoral epiphyses (ECF), and two further descendants had coxarthrosis possibly following subclinical course of an ECF. This pedigree is suggestive for a dominant inheritance with variable penetrance. Besides a few families with more than two affected members, almost 95% of the cases in the literature occur sporadically, many of these probably representing phenocopies.
