Slipped capital femoral epiphysis in 17 Maine Coon cats.

Objectives From May 2009 to January 2015, 208 Maine Coon cats presented to the Tierklinik Hollabrunn - a small animal referral and first-opinion centre - and 17 (8.17%) cats were diagnosed with a slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Over the same time period, 29 (0.67%) of 4348 cats (all breeds) were diagnosed with SCFE. Methods Clinical and orthopaedic examinations and diagnostic imaging were performed on all affected Maine Coons. Age at first presentation, sex, body weight, body condition score (BCS), unilateral or bilateral manifestation of the disease, activity level and duration of l

Increasing incidence of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in Trinidad and Tobago: A 50-year review.

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) is a physeal disorder of the proximal femur. Misdiagnosis and late treatment are associated with poorer outcomes. The epidemiology and delays in treatment of the disease between 1968 and 2018 were investigated in North Trinidad. The number of cases presenting annually has increased over the decades and the incidence between 2008-2018 was 2.2 cases per 100 000 per year. Almost 70% of cases were above the 95th percentile for body weight. Delay in treatment from onset of symptoms was 278 ± 258 days. Awareness of the risk factors and clinical presentation o

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis in an ambulant patient with spastic cerebral palsy. A long-term evolution.

We report the case of a boy aged 13 years and 9 months, with predominantly right-sided spastic tetraparesis, who could walk with assistance, GMFCS III, phenotype consistent with adiposogenital syndrome. He presented a 4-week history of left-sided limp without pain, radiologically classified as a stable, chronic slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) with mild slippage (<30º) on the Southwick classification. In situ fixation of the hip was performed using a full-headed screw, followed by six weeks of rest. Twelve years since the intervention, the patient remains asymptomatic with no clinical

Epidemiology of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a well-characterized disorder of the hip seen in adolescent patients. It is characterized by deformity secondary to failure through the proximal femoral growth plate, which results in posterior-inferior displacement of the epiphysis on the proximal femoral metaphysis. Long-term sequelae of SCFE may include osteonecrosis, residual deformity, leg length discrepancy, degenerative joint disease, and chronic pain. The long-term consequences of SCFE may be the source of significant morbidity for the patient, and depending of the local incidence

Surgical treatment of femoroacetabular impingement after slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) post slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) may lead to degenerative changes on the hip. We have reviewed the current procedures in the literature, aiming to correct the SCFE to prevent FAI and the ones that treat FAI post SCFE. RECENT FINDINGS: The trends of managing moderated or severe SCFE is to correct the displacement by reduction and fixation with articular hematoma decompression in unstable hips and Dunn modified procedure even for unstable and stable situations. However, after FAI is settled, the options are osteochondroplasty by

Approach to the management of slipped capital femoral epiphysis and primary hyperparathyroidism.

CONTEXT: Worldwide, only nine cases of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) have been reported. CASE ILLUSTRATION: This is a report on adolescent subjects with SCFE associated with PHP exhibiting the leading pathogenesis and clinical course. METHODS: Here, we reviewed all known cases and developed an effective approach to the management of SCFE and PHP. RESULTS: In cases of emergency, SCFE fixation is primarily done regardless of any preexistent hypercalcemia due to PHP and is followed by parathyroidectomy as soon as possible. In cases o

In situ fixation for slipped capital femoral epiphysis: perspectives in 2011.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis is usually treated with in situ fixation to prevent progression of deformity. However, slipped capital femoral epiphysis always is associated with structural risk factors for hip dysfunction in addition to the risk of slip progression. Femoro-acetabular impingement causes some mechanical abnormality in every hip affected by slipped capital femoral epiphysis, even when the slip is mild. The severity of femoro-acetabular impingement caused by slipped capital femoral epiphysis depends on several factors. Cumulative injury to the articular cartilage can result fro

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis with severe vitamin D deficiency.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis is a relatively common disorder in late childhood and early adolescence, with an incidence in the United States of approximately 10 per 100,000. Although clinicians have theorized that contributing factors to the development of slipped capital femoral epiphysis include 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency and other nutritional deficiencies, the roles of these factors have not been fully analyzed. This article presents a case of a morbidly obese 13-year-old African-American boy who presented with sudden worsening of chronic hip pain and was diagnosed with stable, bil

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis as a complication of growth hormone therapy.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a rare complication of growth hormone (GH) therapy. Here, we report three patients who developed SCFE during GH therapy. The first two patients had hypopituitarism and had started GH therapy at the age of 15 years 6 months and 13 years 9 months, respectively. SCFE developed 4 years and 1 year after GH therapy, respectively. The third patient had Prader-Willi syndrome with obesity and hypogonadism and began GH therapy at the age of 12 years and 11 months. SCFE developed 2 months after starting GH therapy. Pain over the hip joints or over the knees is

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis: etiology and treatment.

Progression of slip is apt to cause complications including osteonecrosis and osteoarthritis. Such complications result in a poor prognosis for the joint. Therefore, to diagnose slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) while it is still mild is important to avoid complications as well as to prevent further slippage. In Japan, as the number of obese patients increases, obesity seems to be involved in the onset of slip both biomechanically and endocrinologically. We need to take care of obese children as they comprise a reservoir for SCFE patients. For severe slip cases, treatment is difficult o

Seasonal variation of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in the United States.

Seasonal variation in the onset of symptoms of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has been described. The author examined seasonal variation of hospital admissions for SCFE using a national database and compared seasonal variation between the northern and southern United States, between girls and boys, and between black and white children. Significant seasonal variation was found in the North in both boys and girls, but there was less seasonal variation among blacks than among whites. Some seasonal variation was present in the South, but it did not reach the level of statistical signific

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis: physeal histologic features before and after fixation.

Physeal histopathologic changes following slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) are usually considered permanent. This assumption may not be correct, since radiographic signs of proximal femoral neck growth and remodeling are commonly seen after fixation. This work analyzed the physeal histologic features of chondroepiphyseal biopsies before and after SCFE surgical fixation but before complete physiologic epiphysiodesis. Eighteen patients, nine with unstable and nine with stable SCFE of varying severity, had pretreatment biopsies. Three patients had postfixation biopsies prior to total phys

Slip progression after in situ single screw fixation for stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

The medical records and frog-leg lateral radiographs of 37 children with 46 stable slips treated with in situ single cannulated screw fixation at the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Lexington, from 1990 to 1998 were reviewed. The first postoperative frog-leg lateral radiograph was used to determine the head-shaft angle, the screw position, and the number of screw threads that engaged the epiphysis. The mean age at surgery was 12.3 years. The mean age when a frog-leg lateral radiograph first demonstrated physeal closure was 14.0 years. Nine slips (20%) demonstrated progression of more than 10

Nonunion of femoral neck fracture and trochanteric osteotomy after a pinned, slipped capital femoral epiphysis: a case report.

Femoral neck fracture as a complication of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is rare. Even rarer is a femoral neck nonunion as an additional complication. This is the first case reported in the literature of a failed valgus osteotomy for a femoral neck nonunion. A salvage operation involving a step-cut valgus/flexion/internal rotation osteotomy, open reduction and internal fixation, with a blade plate and cannulated screw, placement of an allograft femoral strut, and allograft bone grafting was successfully performed. Femoral neck fractures following SCFE fixation are more difficult to
