A 75-year-old man was referred to our department because of discolouration of his tongue and an elevated CRP. Clinical examination did not reveal any other abnormalities. Blood examination showed an excessive amount of leukocytes with low platelet and erythrocyte counts. These findings indicated an atypical presentation of acute myeloid leukaemia.

The White Blood Cell differential given by the new analyser Coulter STKS was studied in a group of hospitalized patients originating from non-hematological departments (group 1; n = 290) and a group of patients suffering from an hematological disease (group 2; n = 106) with blood smear abnormalities. Polycythemia vera is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm, which is primarily characterized by elevated erythrocyte count with the risk of thrombosis, hemorrhage, and vasomotor symptoms. More common reported about bleeding events are gastrointestinal, mucosal, and cutaneous bleeding. Spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage/bleeding is seldom reported. Here, we report the case of a 50-year-old female with polycythemia vera who developed a spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage. She improved significantly after hydroxyurea agent and red cell apheresis, and the hematocrit decreased from 74% to 40%.

The possible association of leukotriene B4 (LTB4)-like activity with the development of active rheumatoid arthritis was studied in 25 children with the disease and in 15 normal subjects. Serum LTB4-like activity was found to be significantly higher in the active stage of the disease when compared with the values obtained from patients during the inactive stage and from healthy children. No correlation was found between LTB4-activity and other laboratory parameters, e.g. haemoglobin level, white cell count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

A retrospective examination was made of archival data on 98 patient episodes of infection with Plasmodium vivax occurring over a period of 4-11 weeks to document changes in hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations associated with continuing parasitemia. The mean percentage change in the Hb concentration for each of the 10 seven-day intervals was -13.4, -10.9, -4.8, 0.12, 0.94, 4.0, 0.69, 11.6, 2.4, and 8.3, respectively. Uptake and biological effects of synthetic glucocorticoids (GCs) were analyzed using common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Fish were exposed to clobetasol propionate (CP) or clobetasone butyrate (CB) individually or in mixture at 1 μg L(-1) for 21 days. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) of CB was calculated as 100, and BCF of CP was less than 16. No effects were found in fish erythrocyte and leukocyte numbers and serum glucose levels after exposure to the selected GCs.
