IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Millions of women worldwide suffer from vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) associated with menopause, and many women report that this adversely affects their quality of life. Ospemifene is a non-hormonal estrogen receptor agonist/antagonist effective in the treatment of VVA. Although similar in structure to other estrogen receptor agonists/antagonists that have antagonistic effects on the vagina, ospemifene has an estrogen-like effect on vaginal epithelium. This review focuses on ospemifene including its pharmacologic properties, clinical efficacy and safety.

Gynaecomastia is a common situation, with a proliferation of glandular component of male breast secondary to an imbalance in sexual hormones in mammary tissue. A main cause of gynaecomastia is anabolic steroids consumption. Few studies have been performed in patients with high consumption of anabolic steroids, showing a high prevalence (52%). Although most women with uterine fibroids are asymptomatic, over 30% of them will present with varying symptoms. INTRODUCTION: Clomiphene citrate (CC) is a selective estrogen receptor modulator that has been used for the treatment of hypogonadism in men since the 1970s. It acts centrally to increase secretion of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, thereby increasing testosterone production and serum levels. Unlike testosterone replacement therapy, CC does not suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, preserving intratesticular testosterone production and spermatogenesis. This is especially useful in treating hypogonadal men who are interested in fertility.

The chemoprevention of breast cancer using pharmacologic agents has had substantial clinical success.
