PURPOSE OF REVIEW: People who use illicit drug substances (e.g., heroin) and sex workers are vulnerable to acquiring HIV. Due to the criminalization of illicit drug substances and sex work in many countries, these populations often reside in rights-constrained settings where their well-being, freedom, and access to HIV prevention and care services may be compromised due to legal prosecutions and societal stigma.
RECENT FINDINGS: This study conducted a literature review on papers that evaluated a combination of the following three components: ethics, technology-based research, and populations

BACKGROUND: Damage to the central nervous system can occur in adulthood, for example, due to stroke, trauma, tumours, or chronic diseases. After damage to the central nervous system, cognitive impairments occur in addition to physical limitations. Occupational therapy is most often prescribed for neurological diagnoses, including stroke and traumatic brain injury.
METHODS: The health technology assessment (HTA) report this HTA article is based on investigates the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and patient-related, social and ethical aspects of occupational therapy for patients wi

We appreciate Reierson's thoughtful commentary on our 2019 paper, which described our experiences, ethical process, judgment calls, and lessons from a 2016-2017 data-sharing pilot between Crisis Text Line and academic researchers. The commentary raises important questions about the ethical conduct of health research in the digital age, particularly regarding informed consent, potential conflicts of interest, and the protection of vulnerable populations. Our article focused specifically on the noncommercial use of Crisis Text Line data for research purposes, so we restrict our reply to points r

Pediatric critical care medicine : a journal of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies2025eng
OBJECTIVES: Infant organ donation is rare but when it does occur, infants are more commonly eligible for donation after circulatory death (DCD) than donation after neurological death. The aims of this scoping review were to identify: 1) existing research, ethical, and policy information about infant organ DCD and 2) knowledge gaps to guide future research.
DATA SOURCES: A literature search of MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and the Web of Science up to 2024. No other date or search limits were applied. A gray literature search for policy and clinical guideline documents was also conducted.

Phone-based interviews present a range of ethical challenges, including how to ensure informed consent and privacy and maintain confidentiality. Our paper presents conceptual and practical ethical considerations taken into account across three telephone studies on the impact of COVID-19 conducted following India's nationwide lockdown imposed in March 2020. Two studies captured COVID-19 response impact on primary-level Reproductive Maternal Neonatal and Child Health (RMNCH) services and on provider wellness, respectively. The third study focused on how the gendered experience of COVID-19 and th

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2026eng
Liver transplantation (LT) is an ethically complex procedure that involves allocating a limited, life-saving resource. For over twenty years, the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score and its variations have implemented a sickest-first ethical approach, enhancing waitlist survival rates and adding objectivity to the process. Nonetheless, ongoing disparities based on sex, race, and other structural factors reveal the shortcomings of relying on simplified, static models of disease severity. As LT progresses into an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine lear

"Therapeutic" bed rest continues to be used widely, despite evidence of no benefit and known harms. In this commentary, we summarize the Cochrane reviews of bed rest and propose an ethical argument for discontinuing this practice. Cochrane systematic reviews do not support "therapeutic" bed rest for threatened abortion, hypertension, preeclampsia, preterm birth, multiple gestations, or impaired fetal growth. This assessment has been echoed in other comprehensive reviews. Prescribing bed rest is inconsistent with the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and justice. Hence, if bed rest i

AbstractWhether and how patients should participate in clinical ethics discussions is an important contemporary debate. Murdoch recently reported clinicians' and ethics service members' views from England and the United States on patient participation in ethics consultation. In response to the call for further understanding, we report parents' and clinicians' experiences of active parental and child involvement in ethics case reviews (ECRs), including the then-novel use of videoconference ECRs during the pandemic in a UK tertiary children's hospital. Between January 2018 and May 2023, parents

Spine surgery missions in low-resource settings can meaningfully close global gaps in access to care but require careful logistical and relational planning. Drawing on collaborative missions within 2 Jamaican hospital systems under the Back to Healing nonprofit initiative, we review financial realities, logistical barriers, ethical responsibilities, and human dimensions that define high-impact missions. Success depends on financial planning and transparency, equipment logistics, intraoperative adaptability, and operating room throughput, but equally on sustained partnership with host instituti

Racine et al.'s Ethics Review highlights the challenges associated with the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the context of early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). As CAM are increasingly promoted and sold on the Internet, the unregulated online environment has the potential to significantly impact the health and well-being of the aging demographic, and in particular of individuals concerned about AD. In this response, the ethical challenges specific to the online environment are discussed and solutions are put forward to empower the aging population to maximize the

Physicians have conducted research on syphilis for centuries, seeking to understand its etiology and the means of transmission as well as find ways to prevent and cure the disease. Their research practices often strayed from today's ethical standards. In this paper we review ethical aspects of the long history of research on syphilis with emphasis on the experiments performed in the 20th century. The description of research around the time of World War II covers medical experiments carried out in US prisons and in the experimentation centers established by Japanese doctors in occupied territor

The contamination of environments with radionuclides can give rise to consequences that encompass far more than health risks from exposure to radiation. As experience from Chernobyl demonstrated, both the accident and remediation measures can have serious social and economic consequences. This paper presents a review of some of these issues, including their ethical relevance, and presents a check-list of socio-ethical aspects of remediation measures. The paper concludes with an overview of social remediation measures, encompassing actions that are directed towards benefits other than dose redu
