One-year clinical evaluation of a giomer-based injectable composite compared with a highly viscous glass-ionomer cement in restoring class II cavities of primary molars: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries in the primary dentition remains a major concern, with Class II cavities in molars posing particular restorative challenges. BEAUTIFIL Flow Plus X, a giomer-based injectable composite, offers esthetic and mechanical benefits with fluoride release and easier placement in children, while EQUIA® Forte Fil HT, a glass hybrid restorative, provides enhanced strength for stress-bearing areas. Clinical evidence in primary teeth is still limited, and this study aimed to compare their performance in Class II restorations of primary molars to support material selection in pediat

The IADR Policy and Position Statements on Safety of Dental Amalgam.

Dental amalgam has served as a widely used restorative material in dentistry for over 150 years, demonstrating long-term clinical performance, cost-effectiveness, safety, and ease of placement, especially in situations where alternative restorative materials may be clinically less effective or economically less feasible. Composed of approximately 50% elemental mercury alloyed with silver, tin, copper, and other metals, current scientific evidence supports the safety of dental amalgam for the general population, excluding individuals with allergies to amalgam components or severe renal impairme

Electromyography in diagnosing temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although electromyography (EMG) has been used extensively in dentistry to assess masticatory muscle impairments in several conditions, especially temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), many investigators have questioned its psychometric properties and accuracy in diagnosing TMD. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors conducted a systematic review to analyze the literature critically and determine the accuracy of EMG in diagnosing TMDs. They conducted an electronic search of MEDLINE, Embase, all Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews, Allied and Complementary Medicine, Ovid HealthSTAR and Sc

Optimising combined treatment for migraine and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs).

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and migraine are highly prevalent, overlapping pain conditions that cause considerable burden in the population. These two disorders are of different etiology and pathophysiology, but both are mediated by the trigeminal system. Due to the interrelated anatomy and physiology of the craniofacial and cervical structures, shared molecular links and mutual feedback, there is an inherent potential for exacerbation of symptomatology, perpetuation and progression; however, on a positive note, there is good potential for developing integrated, mutually beneficial mana

Aesthetics and Patient-Reported Outcomes in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry: Consensus Report.

BACKGROUND: Aesthetics and patient-reported experiences (PREs) and outcomes (PROs) influence treatment choices, but have been largely overlooked in periodontology and implant dentistry. This consensus conference evaluated these factors by focusing on gingival recession defects (GRDs), immediate or early/delayed implant placement and peri-implant buccal soft-tissue dehiscences. METHODS: The workshop discussions were informed by five specifically commissioned systematic reviews covering PREs, PROs and clinician-reported outcomes (CROs), including effectiveness, aesthetics and other concerns. The challenge of implant therapy in the posterior maxilla: providing a rationale for the use of short implants.

Rehabilitating patients with a resorbed maxilla presents several challenges when the desired treatment plan involves the placement of endosseous implants. Correct diagnosis requires knowledge on jaw healing patterns, systemic effects, and the impact of bone quality changes on implant success rates. Appropriate treatment planning requires an in-depth understanding of the materials and methods available to the contemporary implant surgeon. The clinician must be able to persist on evidence-based techniques and adhere to those proven methods. Successful surgical placement requires correct use of t

Hypersensitivity to mercury, nickel and chromium in relation to dental materials.

Three metals which are used in dental materials are recognized as causing sensitization sufficiently frequently to consider whether problems might arise from their use in dentistry. These metals are, mercury, nickel and chromium. Nickel is by far the commonest sensitizer, 10 per cent of women are allergic to nickel; sensitization usually occurs through jewellery or fasteners on articles of clothing. Chromium (as chromate) is a much less common sensitizer for several reasons. Sensitization only occurs through hexavalent salts of chromate and the degree of exposure of humans to these salts is mu

Guiding the AI revolution in periodontology and implant dentistry: Concepts, ethics, accountability, and a roadmap for sustainable adoption.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly gaining attention in the field of periodontology and implant dentistry. Currently developed models can support diagnosis, treatment planning, and maintenance monitoring. However, most of the available literature is based on retrospective and often single-modality data sets. Therefore, they lack clinical generalizability and underrepresent the multimodal nature of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: This study examines the current status of AI in the field of periodontology and implant dentistry and discusses t

Management of deep caries and the exposed pulp.

Caries prevalence remains high throughout the world, with the burden of disease increasingly affecting older and socially disadvantaged groups in Western cultures. If left untreated, caries will advance through dentine stimulating pulpitis and eventually pulp infection and necrosis; however, if conservatively managed, pulpal recovery occurs even in deep carious lesions. Traditionally, deep caries management was destructive with nonselective (complete) removal of all carious dentine; however, the promotion of minimally invasive biologically based treatment strategies has been advocated for sele

Extracellular Vesicles in Regenerative Dentistry.

The regeneration of orodental and craniofacial tissues remains a primary clinical challenge owing to the requirement of harmonized integration of hard-soft tissues, immune modulation, neurogenesis, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoparticles containing RNAs, metabolites, lipids, and proteins that have surfaced as vital paracrine regulators able to coordinate these intricate mechanisms without the intrinsic risks associated with cell transplantation. This review synthesizes extensive in vivo evidence and evolving clinical findings highlighting that EVs from im

Preservation-to-Precision in Severe Early Childhood Caries: A Narrative Review of Silver Diamine Fluoride-When "Buying Time" Must Not Become "Selling Time".

Severe early childhood caries (SECC) in preschool children is a progressive, multifactorial disease with far-reaching consequences for child health, family functioning, and health systems. Minimally invasive dentistry (MID), particularly 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF), is increasingly used to arrest lesions and "buy time" when definitive restorative care is delayed. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence-based guidelines and real-world utilization data to clarify the appropriate role and limits of SDF in SECC management. Professional guidance supports SDF for lesion arrest withi

Robot-Assisted Endodontic Retreatment: A Case Report with Clinical Considerations.

Fiber posts present significant challenges for nonsurgical endodontic retreatment, as improper removal may result in iatrogenic root perforation or even root fracture. Recently, robotic technology has attracted considerable attention in dentistry and active dental robotic (ADR) systems can perform procedures based on preset instructions, minimizing reliance on the dentist's experience. This case report describes the application of an ADR system for fiber post removal through an existing zirconia crown. A 26-year-old female was diagnosed with previously treated, symptomatic apical periodontitis
