Responses of pony mares to the agent of contagious equine metritis 1977.

Reproduction of contagious equine metritis 1977 in Pony mares was achieved with cultures of an unclassified Gram-negative coccobacillus. Infected mares developed a vaginal discharge and associated inflammatory changes of the cervix and vagina. There was evidence of variation in pathogenicity between different strains of the organism. Although all infected mares made spontaneous clinical recoveries, the Gram-negative coccobacillus persisted in the genital tracts of a considerable proportion for a variable period after challenge. Recovery of the organism was not associated solely with the occurr

Pleural, peritoneal and pericardial effusions - a biochemical approach.

The pathological accumulation of serous fluids in the pleural, peritoneal and pericardial space occurs in a variety of conditions. Since patient management depends on right and timely diagnosis, biochemical analysis of extravascular body fluids is considered a valuable tool in the patient management process. The biochemical evaluation of serous fluids includes the determination of gross appearance, differentiation of transudative from exudative effusions and additional specific biochemical testing to assess the effusion etiology. This article summarized data from the most relevant literature c

Ascites and secondary bacterial peritonitis associated with small bowel obstruction.

Wide albumin gradient (transudative) ascites is usually due to liver disease but may also result from many other disorders, including heart failure, hepatic infiltration by tumor, hepatic vein thrombosis, and veno-occlusive disease. It has not been linked with small bowel obstruction. Narrow albumin gradient (exudative) ascites, usually due to peritoneal carcinoma or inflammation, has been noted in cases of necrotic or perforated bowel, but simple small bowel obstruction has not previously been appreciated as a possible cause for ascites. We report a patient who developed wide albumin gradient

Pleural effusions.

Pleural effusions develop following changes in capillary permeability, capillary hydrostatic pressure, plasma colloid osmotic pressure, or lymphatic drainage. Generalized fluid retention or a transudate suggests a systemic cause while an exudate suggests a local cause. The diagnosis can usually be established by clinical assessment, chest radiography, analysis of pleural fluid, pleural biopsy, and appropriate special investigations. When no cause can be found, particular care should be taken to exclude secondary carcinoma, tuberculosis, pulmonary infarction, and mesothelioma; the patient shoul

Ascitic fluid analysis in acute pancreatitis: Clinically promising but methodologically constrained prognostic indicators.

A recent single-center retrospective study by Rao et al has offered valuable insights into the prognostic utility of ascitic fluid characteristics in acute pancreatitis. Their findings, which demonstrate associations between ascitic color, turbidity, and elevated lactate dehydrogenase levels with organ failure, infected pancreatic necrosis, and in-hospital mortality provide a valuable contribution to a relatively underexplored area in pancreatology. However, the reliance on subjective visual assessment and a single time-point evaluation raises concerns regarding reproducibility and dynamic dis

[Advantages and limitations of chemicomorphological study of pleural fluid].

A chemical-physical and morphological examination of 109 pleural samples taken from 66 patients showed that the most reliable laboratory tests for discriminating between an exudate and transudate were specific gravity, total effusion protein content and the effusion/serum protein ratio, while LDH and cell number seem less important. In the differential diagnosis of pleuritis, pleural fluid amylase assays are important only if certain well-defined diseases are suspected (particularly pancreatitis). In this case the assay is irreplaceable. Glucose assay may be carried out for a wider range of co

Adenosine deaminase in pleural effusion: Bridging diagnosis and the pathophysiology of inflammation.

This editorial underscores the importance of Maranhão et al's study, which investigates pleural adenosine deaminase (P-ADA) as a biomarker for inflammatory pleural effusions. Despite advances in imaging, distinguishing between inflammatory and non-inflammatory causes of pleural effusion remains a diagnostic challenge. The authors conducted a rigorous retrospective cohort analysis of 157 patients (124 with inflammatory exudates and 33 with non-inflammatory transudates), establishing a robust cutoff value of P-ADA ≥ 9.00 U/L for diagnosing inflammatory diseases using receiver operating character

Chocolate-Colored Pseudochylothorax in a Woman with a History of Pleuropulmonary Tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND Pseudochylothorax is a rare entity, with only a few hundred case reports worldwide. It presents as a pleural effusion rich in lipids, typically with a cloudy, milky appearance. The diagnosis is made based on the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the pleural fluid. CASE REPORT This is the case report of a 55-year-old woman with a history of pleuropulmonary tuberculosis that was treated in childhood, with a new infection and treatment in adulthood that evolved to a left pleural effusion. Thirteen years after completing her last treatment for tuberculosis, the patient develope

Role of cytoblock on pleural effusion for diagnosis of malignant disease.

BACKGROUND: Thoracocentesis of pleural effusion is a simple technique for pleural fluid examination through cytology. In addition to cytological examination to assess the nature of pleural fluid content, we can also perform more detailed examinations through cytoblocks of residual fluid. These paraffin-embedded cytoblock samples are important because we can perform examinations as in other bioptic samples. In these samples, immunohistochemical and molecular analyses can be performed. METHODS: Two hundred fifty-five cytological samples from patients with pleural effusion were examined. In case

Etiology, pathological characteristics, and clinical management of black pleural effusion: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pleural effusion is characterized by excessive fluid collection in the pleural cavity. Black pleural effusion (BPE) is a rare entity with only limited scientific data. We aimed to review the current literature on black pleural effusion to characterize demographics, etiology, clinical presentation, pathological findings, available treatment strategies, and prognosis of this rare condition. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of case reports and series and synthesized data on demographics, manifestations, management, and outcomes of patients with BPE. We searched Cochrane Libr

Automated Detection, Segmentation, and Classification of Pleural Effusion From Computed Tomography Scans Using Machine Learning.

OBJECTIVE: This study trained and evaluated algorithms to detect, segment, and classify simple and complex pleural effusions on computed tomography (CT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For detection and segmentation, we randomly selected 160 chest CT scans out of all consecutive patients (January 2016-January 2021, n = 2659) with reported pleural effusion. Effusions were manually segmented and a negative cohort of chest CTs from 160 patients without effusions was added. A deep convolutional neural network (nnU-Net) was trained and cross-validated (n = 224; 70%) for segmentation and tested on a

Local burn wound environment versus systemic response: Comparison of proteins and metabolites.

In this study, paired blood plasma (BP) and blister fluid (BF) samples from five paediatric burn patients were analysed using mass spectrometry to compare their protein and metabolite composition. The relative quantification of proteins was achieved through a label-free data independent acquisition mode. The relative quantification of metabolites was achieved using a Shimadzu Smart Metabolite Database gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) targeted assay. In total, 562 proteins and 141 individual metabolites were identified in the samples. There was 81% similarity in the proteins present
