Trichomegaly in a 3-year-old girl with alopecia areata.

We report here a case of bilateral trichomegaly associated with alopecia areata in a 3-year-old girl, healthy except for mild atopic dermatitis. Trichomegaly is a rare condition and, in many cases, is a side effect of medication such as ophthalmic solution prostaglandin analogs and epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors. Trichomegaly has also been associated with acquired medical conditions such as HIV, systemic lupus erythematosus, anorexia nervosa, porphyria cutanea tarda, hypothyroidism, and dermatomyositis. In very rare circumstances, trichomegaly has been described as part of congeni

Nickel ferrule applicators: a source of nickel exposure in children.

Eye makeup has been investigated for nickel content and found to have no direct association with nickel allergy and cosmetic dermatitis. However, the tools used (e.g., eyelash curlers, hairdressing scissors, hair curlers, and eye shadow and makeup applicators) may be sources. Nickel is ubiquitous and a wide range of sources have been reported, and makeup applicators (ferrules) now join the list.

The Prevalence of Demodex folliculorum in blepharitis patients and the normal population.

PURPOSE: Demodex folliculorum (DF), which is frequently found in patients with chronic blepharitis, is a well-known common inhabitant of eyelash follicles. In the present study, the prevalence of DF in seborrheic blepharitis patients and controls was investigated. In addition, the associations between the presence of DF and host factors (age, sex) were analyzed. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional study was done involving 500 cases. In all, 6000 cilia from 170 patients with seborrheic blepharitis and 330 patients with normal eyes were examined for DF. Twelve eyelash samples were epilated

Refractive Amblyopia Secondary to Astigmatism in Pediatric Patients With Distichiasis.

Distichiasis is the presence of accessory eyelashes emerging from the meibomian gland orifices. It may occur as an isolated abnormality or in conjunction with other ocular and systemic defects. Lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome (LDS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by distichiasis and age-dependent lower extremity swelling due to altered lymphatic flow. The authors describe four pediatric patients with distichiasis (one with genetically proven LDS) with refractive amblyopia secondary to astigmatism. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2021;58(4);e16-e18.].

Trichotillomania: an important psychocutaneous disorder.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is a type of alopecia due to a psychocutaneous disorder, a self-induced illness classified as an impulse control disorder but with features of both obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and addictive disorders. Although most common in children, this repetitive pulling out of one's own hair can occur at any age. The target usually is hair of the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and pubic area using fingers, brushes, combs, and tweezers. Therapy for TTM can be challenging.

Mental retardation, growth retardation, unusual nose, and open mouth: an autosomal recessive entity.

In this paper, I describe the investigations in three members of an extended consanguineous family from Saudi Arabia, in which nine members show severe mental retardation, long eyelashes, high nasal bridge, underdeveloped malae, low hanging columella, thin upper vermillion, and everted lower vermillion, retrognathia, and an open mouth apparently caused by mandibular dentoalveolar protrusion. Pedigree analysis makes it likely that this is an autosomal recessively inherited disorder. A detailed literature search failed to show a similar entity.

Cryptophthalmos--syndactyly syndrome.

A 5 months old female baby was presented with congenital abnormality at the outpatients' department. She had syndactyly of proximal and middle phalanges of middle and ring fingers of both the hands and third and fourth toes of right foot. Ocular examination showed absent eyebrows and eyelashes and shallow orbits. The diagnosis was made of cryptophthalmos--syndactyly syndrome. She was operated upon. The outcome of the operation was very poor and the end result was disappointing.

Familial acanthosis nigricans with madarosis.

We report familial acanthosis nigricans affecting a 35-year-old woman, her 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. Absence of the eyebrows and eyelashes was noted in this family. The mother had no axillary hair and her pubic hair was sparse. The boy also suffered from congenital heart disease and a congenital cataract in the left eye. The combination of acanthosis nigricans and ectodermal defects in this family may represent a distinct nosological entity.

The Floating-Harbor syndrome.

We describe the seventh patient with the Floating-Harbor syndrome. Similar to previous cases in the literature this girl presented with proportionate intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, normocephaly, triangular face with bulbous nose, long eyelashes, short upper lip, small vermilion border of upper lip, dorsally rotated ears, deep nuchal hair line, hirsutism, and clinodactyly of little fingers. She exhibited mental retardation and retarded speech development. Clinical symptoms and differential diagnosis of this rare syndrome are briefly discussed.

An accidental tarsorrhaphy caused by acrylic adhesive.

A 10-year old boy accidently splashed acrylic adhesive in his left eye. I separated the eyelids by cutting adherent eyelashes with the use of a biomicroscope for magnification illumination. Tests with rabbits demonstrated that the solvent nitromethane dissolved the adhesions but diluted the glue and led to adhesions between the tarsal portion of the eyelid and the cornea. I used acrylic adhesions successfully for a temporary relief of irritation in a patient with Bell's palsy.

Corneal Sequestration and Bilateral Distichiasis in a Binturong (Arctictis binturong).

OBJECTIVE: To report the first documented case of corneal sequestration and distichiasis in a binturong (Arctictis binturong), discuss implications of disease prevalence in a non-domestic feliform, and hypothesize on potential etiology and predisposing factors for corneal sequestration. ANIMAL STUDIED: A 15-year-old intact male binturong. PROCEDURES: Anesthetized physical examination and ophthalmic assessment were performed by board-certified specialists. Corneal cytology, culture and sensitivity, debridement of the sequestra in lieu of keratectomy, histopathology, and cryoepilation were per

Congenital Distichiasis in a Young Male: A Rare Case without Systemic Association.

Congenital distichiasis is a rare eyelid disorder typically associated with lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome. However, isolated forms without systemic manifestations have also been recognized. This report presents a 28-year-old male with long-standing bilateral eye rubbing and recent unilateral visual blurring. Slit-lamp examination revealed distichiasis arising from meibomian gland orifices, more prominent in the left eye, without corneal involvement. A diagnosis of isolated congenital distichiasis was made. The patient underwent selective electroepilation with complete symptom relief and no

Distichiasis in a ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 4-year-old intact male ferret was presented to the Ophthalmology Service of the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals of Utrecht University with chronic blepharospasm, epiphora, and conjunctivitis of the right eye. Examination of the eye revealed mild conjunctivitis and three hairs protruding from the openings of meibomian glands in the upper eyelid, providing the clinical diagnosis of distichiasis. The distichia were removed by transconjunctival unipolar electrocautery. Recovery was uneventful, but the original signs recurred 10 weeks after surgery. Ophthalmic examination rev
