UNLABELLED: Penetrating injury of the face and airway may make endotracheal intubation difficult or impossible. We report the case of a patient who attempted to commit suicide with a crossbow. Surgery under general anesthesia was required to remove the arrow. The oral intubation route was impossible, and a fiberoptic nasal intubation under local anesthesia was performed.
IMPLICATIONS: We report a case of a 42-yr-old patient who underwent surgery for a penetrating craniofacial injury caused by an arrow. Because of the median vertical trajectory of the arrow (from the chin to the frontal skull)

Fluorinated hydrocarbons cause toxicity in humans via their dysrhythmogenic potential and their local physical effects on the skin and mucous membranes. The former is generally the more life-threatening toxic consequence. We present a case of fluorinated hydrocarbon injury resulting from an intentional inhalation exposure that created facial frostbite, which threatened the patient's airway. The clinical range and management of these tissue-toxic effects are reviewed.

A 20-year-old male was admitted to our hospital suffering from a crushing head injury. At accident, his head had been compressed by the printing machine on both temporal regions. He remained at dull conscious. On admission one hour after the injury, he showed bilateral sixth-nerve and seventh nerve palsies and bleeding from the nose. CT scan showed marked pneumocephalus, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, fluid collections in the bilateral sphenoid sinuses and right mastoid air cells. Bone CT disclosed bilateral temporal bone fractures. MRI did not show cerebral parenchymal damage. He recovere

Four cases of hemifacial spasm (HFS) are reported. The spasm followed a few months after injury to a peripheral branch of the seventh nerve. An EMG examination of facial muscles disclosed the typical finding of HFS: spontaneous activity, paradoxical cocontraction, and diffusion of spontaneous or provoked blinking. A nuclear involvement, secondary to the nerve lesion, is the most likely pathophysiological explanation for similar cases in HFS.

This paper describes a modified preauricular surgical approach to the TMJ used in more than 272 joint surgeries since October 1984. During this time, only four surgical procedures have resulted in postsurgical paresis of the frontal branch of the facial nerve. The technique is a modification of the preauricular approaches described by Al Kayat, Bramley, and Dolwick. Relevant anatomic studies that relate to the frontal branch of the facial nerve and associated fascial layers are discussed. From findings of current anatomic dissections, a safe preauricular approach to the TMJ is described, with

Maxillofacial trauma is without doubt still a very challenging area, especially in the early stages of care when other injuries may be present. Craniofacial trauma, with or without life and/or sight-threatening complications, may be associated with significant injuries elsewhere. Both general trauma and facial trauma management have evolved considerably over the last 20 years and on occasion clinical priorities may seemingly conflict, suddenly change or be hidden. In these circumstances a number of clinical dilemmas may arise, which this and three further reviews will discuss. These are based

Facial soft tissue injuries, often resulting in scarring, pose a challenge in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery due to the need for functional and aesthetic restoration. This study evaluates the efficacy of recombinant human growth factors (rhGFs) in scar remodelling for such injuries. A retrospective evaluation was conducted from January 2020 to January 2023, involving 100 patients with facial soft tissue injuries. Participants were divided equally into a control group, receiving standard cosmetic surgical repair, and an observation group, treated with rhGFs supplemented cosmetic surgery.

The hypoglossal (XII) nerve is made up of functionally different nerve branches: the medial branch related to protrusion of the tongue and the lateral branch related to its retraction. The present study was performed to determine the effects of facial (VII) and XII nerve injuries on the survival and growth of rats in which the unilateral or bilateral VII and XII nerve components (main trunk, XII-trunk; medial branch, XII-med; lateral branch, XII-lat) had been resected at different developmental stages. In the suckling period, unilateral as well as bilateral injuries in the XII-trunk or XII-med

The purpose of this study was to evaluate facial trauma in accidents involving a passenger car. In particular, the authors assessed differences in types of facial trauma and severity according to the location of the seat and seat-belt use. A 7-year retrospective review of data was conducted for 419 patients with facial trauma resulting from motor vehicle accidents. Patients who used a seat belt faced a lower risk of severe soft-tissue injury in comparison with having mild soft-tissue injury than patients who did not use a seat belt (P = 0.0129). Additionally, patients who used a seat belt had

Injuries caused by mountain sports account for many of the injuries admitted to the University Hospital of Grenoble. Out of 4,490 traumas, 470 were injuries sustained during the practice of mountain sports. While the frequency of these accidents does not evolve much, the etiological distribution depends on fashion. Thus an increasing number of lesions caused by cross-country biking has been noted during the past two years. We find it urgent to propose protective measures adapted to this new sport.

Facial fracture surgery aims to restore function and facial form while minimizing morbidity; however, late complications may still arise. With the growing use of electric scooters and e-bikes, the epidemiology of facial trauma has shifted, requiring updated characterization. This retrospective cohort study included all patients who underwent operative repair of facial fractures at a tertiary maxillofacial trauma center between 2017 and 2022. Demographic features, mechanism of injury, fracture pattern, treatment modality, and 6-month postoperative outcomes were analyzed. A total of 254 surgical

It is critical to repair severed facial nerves, as lack of treatment may cause long-term motor and sensory impairments. Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) plays an important role in terms of enhancing nerve axon regrowth and maturation during peripheral nerve regeneration after injury. However, simple application of CNTF to the transected nerve site does not afford functional recovery, because it is rapidly flushed away by bodily fluids. The aim of the present study was the construction of a new, bioactive composite nerve graft facilitating persistent CNTF delivery to aid the reconstruction of

In September 2025, a fresh wild mushroom poisoning incident involving five individuals occurred in Sichuan Province, China, three of whom developed poisoning symptoms. Mushroom specimens were collected and identified as Descolea quercina through morphological and phylogenetic analyses. Epidemiological investigation showed that one patient with a high estimated intake (>500 g) developed acute liver injury, with markedly elevated transaminases (ALT 525 U/L, AST 482 U/L), along with facial edema-a rarely reported sign. This patient had stable hyperthyroidism and responded favorably to hepatoprote

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) often causes persistent sensory and motor deficits because of incomplete axonal regeneration and insufficient remyelination. Schwann cells (SCs) are essential for peripheral nerve repair, but effective recovery depends on their timely transition from a repair state to a myelinating phenotype.
OBJECTIVE(S): To investigate whether KDM2B-PP1, a bioactive peptide designed to disrupt the interaction between lysine-specific demethylase 2B (KDM2B) and enhancer of zeste homologue 2 (EZH2), promotes SC redifferentiation, remyelination, and functional recovery

INTRODUCTION: Laparotomy is a common surgical procedure that entails incision of the abdomen and is associated with varying degrees of postoperative pain. Laparotomies can be performed in mice and result in facial grimacing, which can be quantified using PainFace, a software platform that automates facial grimace analyses.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the extent to which incision of the ventral skin, peritoneum, and intestinal manipulation, all of which can occur as part of a laparotomy surgery, affects the magnitude and duration of facial grimacing in 2 strains of mice along with allodynia at th

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroid therapy is commonly recommended for acute facial nerve weakness; however, its effectiveness in treating traumatic nerve injuries remains controversial. This study investigated the functional recovery and cellular effects of systemic dexamethasone administration after facial nerve injury.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were assigned to two groups by intraperitoneal injection: the phosphate-buffered saline group and the dexamethasone group. Facial nerve crush injury was induced, followed by the functional grading of recovery. Cellular effects were investigated using transmissi
