Long-term results after lateral cranial base surgery.

The surgical management of patients with slow-growing benign temporal bone neoplasms has been criticized because of its significant morbidity and mortality compared with results after radiation therapy, but long-term control by irradiation remains unproved. Long-term surgical results have not been studied previously. One hundred twenty-nine skull base operations were performed in 126 patients at the Otology Group, Nashville, Tenn., from January 1970 through May 1987. Fifty-eight patients responded to questionnaires focusing on recovery from loss of cranial nerves. All patients regained some de

Simulated aggressive skull base erosion in response to benign sinonasal disease.

Benign sinonasal masses and slow-growing neoplasms tend to remodel the nasal vault and facial bones, and this is particularly true of nasal polyps and inverted papillomas. However, when such benign masses press against the floor of the anterior cranial fossa and the walls of the sphenoid sinuses, simulated aggressive bone destruction rather than bone remodeling usually occurs. This type of bone destruction implies to the radiologist that a carcinoma may also be present, and this information could dissuade a surgeon from operating with an attempt at cure. In fact, about 90% of the time with inv

[Double flap method in the frontal and temporal area to cover larger defects left by surgery].

Regional flaps are often necessary to cover defects left after operations in the forehead and temple area, since the skin of the scalp does not stretch well and because of the likelihood of dislocation of the eyebrow. We find the double advancement-flap technique using curving incisions of great use in this area. These curved flaps margins follow the wrinkles of the forehead and the relaxed skin tension lines. This contributes to easy healing and inconspicous scars. At the same time undersired facial asymmetry or disturbance of expression can be avoided.

Facial Nerve Meningioma: A Case Mimicking Facial Nerve Schwannoma.

Facial nerve meningioma is exceedingly rare and tends to affect the geniculate ganglion. We present a case of facial nerve meningioma located in the internal auditory canal with a "labyrinthine tail," mimicking facial nerve schwannoma. The clinical and radiological features, growth patterns, and surgical management were reviewed. Progressive facial paralysis was the main syndrome, similar to other facial nerve tumors. When facial nerve function is worse than House-Brackmann grade III, surgical resection should be performed with facial nerve reconstruction.

[Intraparotid facial neurilemmoma].

Neurilemmomas or schwannomas are known to arise from the sheath of peripheral nerves. Out of the cranial nerves, the eighth nerve is the most frequently involved. Neurilemmomas arising from the facial nerve are are, and they usually affect the intratemporal portion of the nerve. Its location in the intraparotid portion is very uncommon. The case of a patient having an intraparotid mass is shown. After surgery it was found to be a neurilemmoma of the facial nerve. These tumors manifest as an asymptomatic mass in the parotid gland. Most of the times, diagnosis is made postoperatively. It is nece

Prospective Assessment of Intraoperative Facial Nerve Monitoring in Patients Undergoing Partial Parotidectomy.

The most significant complication of parotid gland tumor surgery is facial weakness. This study compares the occurrence of transient facial palsy in patients with parotid gland tumors who underwent surgery without monitoring to those who underwent surgery with monitoring. The study's aim was to investigate facial nerve function in patients undergoing parotidectomy as well as the effect of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring and the effect of certain risk factors on the surgery and onset of postoperative facial palsy. This prospective study included 100 patients who underwent parotidectomy.

Frey Syndrome, First Bite Syndrome, great auricular nerve morbidity, and quality of life following parotidectomy.

PURPOSE: Parotidectomy may be burdened by numerous complications that may worsen subjects' quality of life (QoL). These include paresis or paralysis of the facial nerve, face profile asymmetry, keloids, salivary fistula, Frey Syndrome (FS), First Bite Syndrome (FBS), and hypo-anaesthesia of the skin. This study is an effort to assess the incidence of complications following parotidectomy and their impact on subjects' QoL. METHODS: Subjects undergoing parotidectomy for benign neoplasms from 2012 to 2015 were selected and invited to attend our outpatient clinic. After a brief anamnesis, the med

Oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To date 70 cases of oncocytic carcinomas (OCs) have been described in 55 reports. We describe an OC of the parotid gland in a 56-year-old man with simultaneous breast cancer. METHODS: In June 2006, a 56-year-old man was referred to the Otorhinolaryngology Division for a painless right preauricolar mass. The facial nerve was functionally normal. Total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was performed. In January 2007, the patient was referred to the Surgical Division for a left mammary nodule. Total mastectomy with axillary lymphoadenectomy was performed. RESULTS: The mas

DISCUSSION: The physiopathology of NTUs is badly documented. The cutaneous ulcerations look like facial neoplasms but the clinical findings (unilateral and paranasal location; lesion of the trigeminal nerve; local trauma; psychological instability) suggest neurotrophic ulceration. Chondrosarcoma of the Jugular Foramen: A Case Report.

The vast majority of chondrosarcomas of the skull (CS) are located at the skull base and represent locally aggressive malignant tumors that account for 0.15% of all intracranial neoplasms. Complete surgical resection with wide surgical margins is currently the main treatment strategy, but can be hard to achieve due to the complex anatomy of the head and neck. The jugular foramen, situated in the floor of the posterior fossa and posterolaterally to the petro-occipital suture, is a remarkably rare location for CS. A case of primary CS of the jugular foramen in a 65-year-old patient is reported,

Risk of Oral Complications Among IL-17 Inhibitor Users: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: IL-17 inhibitors are increasingly used in dermatologic and autoimmune diseases, yet the risks of associated oral complications remain unclear. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov were comprehensively searched. The primary outcome was the incidence of oral complications following IL-17 inhibitors therapy. A meta-analysis was conducted using random-effects models. RESULTS: A total of 106 clinical trials involving 57,017 participants were included. Oral mucosal infections were the most frequently observed complications. Meta-analysis was performed to eval

Trichoblastomas derived from the facial skin with tactile hair in aged house musk shrews (Suncus murinus).

BACKGROUND: Benign hair follicle tumors are relatively rare cutaneous neoplasms arising from hair follicle differentiation. These tumors are slow-growing solitary papules or nodules in the head, face or neck. The aim of this study was to describe 2 cases of trichoblastomas in tactile hair skin incidentally encountered in aged house musk shrews (Suncus murinus). In addition, this case report clarifies whether the characteristics in the tactile hair skin of Suncus murinus are different from those in humans and other animals. CASE PRESENTATION: The animals were investigated the characteristics o

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Minor Salivary Glands in the Buccal Mucosa: A Rare Entity Arising in an Unusual Location.

One of the rare tumors of the salivary gland is known as basal cell adenoma (BCA). Only a small percentage of salivary gland tumors affect the minor salivary gland of the oral cavity while the majority are found in the parotid gland. We present a rare case of BCA involving the left buccal mucosa of a 45-year-old female. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed well defined solid mass measuring 1.9 x 1.5 cm in the left buccal space inseparable from the buccinator muscle. The T2-weighted image demonstrates a hyperintense signal post-contrast. Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology reve

Diagnosis and management of small bowel neuroendocrine tumors: A state-of-the-art.

This review provides an update on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the small bowel (SB). These NENs are defined as a group of neoplasms deriving from neuroendocrine cells. NENs are currently the most common primary tumors of the SB, mainly involving the ileum, making the SB the most frequently affected part of the gastrointestinal tract. SB NENs by definition are located between the ligament of Treitz and the ileocecal valve. They are characterized by small size and induce an extensive fibrotic reaction in the small inte

Sporadic Endolymphatic Sac Tumor-A Very Rare Cause of Hearing Loss, Tinnitus, and Dizziness.

Sporadic endolymphatic sac tumor is a very rare neoplasm. It is low malignant, locally destructive and expansive, but non-metastasizing. The tumor is very rare in the sporadic form, but more often associated with Von Hippel-Lindau disease. A 65-year old man with left sided tinnitus and hearing loss for several months. Audiometry showed an asymmetrical sensory neural hearing loss on the left side up to 60 dB. The speech discrimination score was 46% and stapedial reflexes were absent. Several years earlier, he had suffered from periods of dizziness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a dest

Tumor-specific diagnostic marker for transmissible facial tumors of Tasmanian devils: immunohistochemistry studies.

Devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) is a transmissible neoplasm that is threatening the survival of the Tasmanian devil. Genetic analyses have indicated that the disease is a peripheral nerve sheath neoplasm of Schwann cell origin. DFTD cells express genes characteristic of myelinating Schwann cells, and periaxin, a Schwann cell protein, has been proposed as a marker for the disease. Diagnosis of DFTD is currently based on histopathology, cytogenetics, and clinical appearance of the disease in affected animals. As devils are susceptible to a variety of neoplastic processes, a specific diagnostic

Cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal metastasis from ductal carcinoma of the breast.

This is the first formal case report of internal auditory canal and cerebellopontine angle metastasis from infiltrative ductal carcinoma of the breast. Only three previous cases have been reported of isolated metastasis in the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal from breast cancer. Currently, no therapeutic guidelines for isolated metastasis from breast cancer in this location exist. We report a case and review the current literature in order to help characterize the clinicopathologic features and management. A 72-year-old female with a 5-year history of left infiltrative ductal
