Fahr's syndrome as the initial imaging characteristics of MELAS syndrome with a possible seizure activity and cardiac arrest: a case report.

This study reported a case of MELAS syndrome presenting as the initial imaging characteristics of Fahr's syndrome with "near" sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and lateralized periodic discharges (LPD). The patient, a young boy, experienced loss of consciousness 2 days prior, which was followed by two limb and facial convulsions. He was later found in cardiac arrest during hospitalization, but regained consciousness gradually after receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation and tracheal intubation. The patient exhibited short stature, intellectual disability, poor sports abilities, and

Contralateral Tongue Deviation Due to Paramedian Pontine Infarction: A Brief Review of Cortico-Hypoglossal Projections.

BACKGROUND Motor function of the tongue is controlled by the hypoglossal nucleus (the lower motor neuron) and its supranuclear innervation (the upper motor neuron). Tongue deviation due to muscle weakness on one side is common in brain stem stroke and is usually associated with dysarthria and dysphagia that decrease the patient's quality of life. This case report presents a typical but rarely discussed case of tongue deviation secondary to a brain stem stroke. In addition, it also offers a concise review of both the ipsilateral and the contralateral cortico-hypoglossal fibers that innervate th

Synchrotron radiation-based FTIR spectro-microscopy of the brainstem of the hSOD1 G93A rat model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Pathological mechanisms in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease, are still poorly understood. One subset o … nd especially their antiparallel β-sheet structure significantly differed in all three regions: the facial nucleus (FN), the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (GRN) and the trigeminal motor nucleus (TMN) in the brainstem tissue of ALS rats. The protein levels varied between different brainstem areas, with the highest concentration observed in the region of the F …

Parasympathetic preganglionic cardiac motoneurons labeled after voluntary diving.

A dramatic bradycardia is induced by underwater submersion in vertebrates. The location of parasympathetic preganglionic cardiac motor neurons driving this aspect of the diving response was investigated using cFos immunohistochemistry combined with retrograde transport of cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) to double-label neurons. After pericardial injections of CTB, trained rats voluntarily dove underwater, and their heart rates (HR) dropped immediately to 95 ± 2 bpm, an 80% reduction. After immunohistochemical processing, the vast majority of CTB labeled neurons were located in the reticular form

Cells in the female retrotrapezoid region upregulate c-fos in response to 10%, but not 5%, carbon dioxide.

The retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) is thought to regulate breathing in response to changes in blood carbon dioxide (CO(2)), and to make a vita … 10% CO(2), consistent with a lack of a dose response to CO(2) in the male RTN. Cells in the nearby facial nucleus upregulated c-fos in the same number of cells regardless of sex or gas exposure, confirming that the sex difference in the RTN is unique to that nucleus. We propose that the male and female RTN upregulate c-fos differently in response to CO(2) due t …

Dynamic changes in the cerebellar-interpositus/red-nucleus-motoneuron pathway during motor learning.

Understanding the role played by the cerebellum in the genesis and control of learned motor responses requires a precise knowledge of interdependent relationships between kinetic neural commands and the performance (kinematics) of the acquired movements. The eyelid motor system is a useful model for studying how simple motor responses are generated and performed. Here, we recorded the activity of interpositus, red nucleus, and/or facial motor neurons during classical eyeblink conditioning, using a delay paradigm. Experiments were carried out in behaving cats, and in conscious wild-type and (Pu

Effects of cochlear ablation on muscarinic acetylcholine receptor binding in the rat cochlear nucleus.

Cholinergic synapses in the cochlear nucleus (CN) have been reported to modulate spontaneous activity via muscarinic acetylcholine receptors … f increased binding on the control side in most CN regions. By contrast, binding in the ipsilateral facial nucleus decreased, compared with the control side, by 7 days after the lesion and showed some recovery toward symmetry by 2 months after lesion, and there was no evidence for contralateral changes. These muscarinic receptor binding changes reflect receptor …

Neurotoxicity in conscious rats following intraventricular SNAP, a nitric oxide donor.

A solution containing S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), a nitric oxide (NO.-releasing compound, was microinjected in doses of 0.25-2 mumol into a lateral ventricle of conscious rats. SNAP produced dose-dependent convulsions similar to those associated with limbic stimulation, such as tonic extension of the hindlimbs and tail, and dystonia of the forepaws. At 2 mumol, SNAP evoked hyperventilation (arterial hypocapnia), arterial hyperglycemia and caused necrotic lesions of periventricular gray (e.g. lateral septal nucleus) and white matter structures. In the caudate nucleus and lateral sep

Distribution of messenger RNAs for the orphan nuclear receptors Nurr1 and Nur77 (NGFI-B) in adult rat brain using in situ hybridization.

Nurr1 and Nur77 (NGFI-B) are orphan nuclear receptors, belonging to the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor gene superfamily. They have conserved amino acid sequence in the zinc-finger DNA binding domains and similar COOH-terminal regions, but have no known ligands. However, different expression patterns during brain development and tissue distributions of these messenger RNAs imply that they might reflect a different transcriptional role in the brain. In this study, the regional and cellular expression of messenger RNAs encoding these two proteins in rat brain has been determined by in situ hybr

Medullary visceral reflex circuits: local afferents to nucleus tractus solitarii synthesize catecholamines and project to thoracic spinal cord.

Visceral feedback circuits in lower brainstem were elucidated with retrograde tracers by mapping neurons that issue local projections to the … ve cell bodies were restricted to the C1 area within a 450-microns column bordered rostrally by the facial nucleus and ventrally by the medullary subpial surface. We conclude that visceral reflex arcs are reciprocally organized. Targets of NTS projection are also sources of local NTS-X afferent innervation. Identification of regeneration-associated genes after central and peripheral nerve injury in the adult rat.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that neurons of the peripheral nervous system have the capacity to regenerate a severed axon leading to functio … y of peripheral and central nerve fibers. For this purpose, axotomy induced changes of regenerating facial nucleus neurons, and non-regenerating red nucleus and Clarke's nucleus neurons have been analyzed in an intra-animal side-to-side comparison. One hundred and thirty five gene fragments have been isolated, of which 69 correspond to known genes encoding for a …

Neural correlates of seed-eating in songbirds.

Some granivorous songbirds remove the hard husk of seeds before swallowing. This dehusking behaviour is a complex sensorimotor task that requires precise coordination of the beak and tongue, and extensive tactile feedback. Here, we tested whether the evolution of dehusking behaviour is linked to changes in brainstem nuclei controlling beak-tongue movements and intra-oral somatosensory inputs. We measured the volumes of the principal sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve (PrV), as well as the trigeminal and facial motor nucleus, across 92 passerine species. We found that species that dehusk s

Wolfram syndrome 1 (Wfs1) mRNA expression in the normal mouse brain during postnatal development.

Wolfram syndrome is a rare genetic disorder accompanying diabetes insipidus, sensorineural hearing loss, neurological complications, and psychiatric illness. This syndrome has been attributed to mutations in the WFS1 gene. In this study, we made a detailed histochemical analysis of the distribution of Wfs1 mRNA in the brain of developing mice. There were three patterns of change in the strength of Wfs1 mRNA signals from birth to early adulthood. In type 1, the signals were weak or absent in neonates but strong or moderate in young adults. This pattern was observed in the CA1 field, parasubicul

Redistribution of neuronal lysosomes induced by colchicine: an electron microscopic quantitative study.

We have previously demonstrated that a single injection of the microtubule poison colchicine, into the lateral cerebral ventricle of the rat … icine-treated rats. Areas examined included the anterior dorsal (AD) thalamus, pontine nucleus, and facial nucleus. The results show that the cytoplasm of these neurons contains significantly fewer large lysosomes after treatment with colchicine while the dendrites become abnormally enriched with large and small lysosomes after treatment. Lysosomes were rarely s …

Deep brain stimulation for intractable neuropathic facial pain.

OBJECTIVE Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-established, evidence-based therapy with FDA approval for Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. Despite the early successful use of DBS to target the sensory thalamus for intractable facial pain, subsequent studies pursuing various chronic pain syndromes reported variable efficacy, keeping DBS for pain as an investigational and "off-label" use. The authors report promising results for a contemporary series of patients with intractable facial pain who were treated with DBS. METHODS Pain outcomes for 7 consecutive patients with unilateral, int

The cellular and molecular etiology of the craniofacial defects in the avian ciliopathic mutant talpid2.

talpid(2) is an avian autosomal recessive mutant with a myriad of congenital malformations, including polydactyly and facial clefting. Although phenotypically similar to talpid(3), talpid(2) has a distinct facial phenotype and an unknown cellular, molecular and genetic basis. We set out to determine the etiology of the craniofacial phenotype of this mutant. We confirmed that primary cilia were disrupted in talpid(2) mutants. Molecularly, we found disruptions in Hedgehog signaling. Post-translational processing of GLI2 and GLI3 was aberrant in the developing facial prominences. Although both GL
