Exploring the importance of shape on dynamic recognition of self-face or friend-face.

Our own face is well-known to us, but it is unclear whether we perceive it in the same way as other familiar faces. Unlike others’ faces, self-faces provide limited opportunities to observe facial motion. This study investigated the importance of shape when recognizing self or friend from dynamic face clips. Dynamic sequences were created using Deepfake, manipulating face shape and motion independently. In both experiments, participants observed a visually presented face and identified whether the face motion was self or friend. In Experiment 1, face shape was manipulated to match or mismatch

Increased sensitivity to sad faces in depressive symptomatology: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Negative bias to sad emotional stimuli has repeatedly been identified as a cognitive feature of major depressive disorder, particularly in facial expression recognition. However, it is unknown how negative bias applies to facial expression recognition in individuals with depressive symptoms. METHODS: A total of 58 university students' facial expression recognition and depression scores were measured using facial stimuli displaying the whole face, with 39 participants completing a 3-month follow-up assessment of depressive symptoms. We used an index that differentiates sensitivity

Assessing memory for emotions separately from emotion recognition after traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often show deficits in recognition of facial emotion, but their ability to remember emotions is poorly understood. Furthermore, there are no practicable tasks that measure this ability. This study examined the construct of memory for emotions using a novel Facial Recognition and Memory for Emotion (FRAME) test. METHOD: Participants were 53 adults with complicated mild-to-severe TBI and a comparison group of 64 neurologically healthy adults. The FRAME and a neuropsychological battery were administered to participants. Analyses included zero-o…

Face imagery and its relation to perception and covert recognition in prosopagnosia.

BACKGROUND: Face imagery can access facial memories without the use of perceptual stimuli. Current data on the relation of imagery to the perceptual function and neuroanatomy of prosopagnosic patients are mixed, and little is known about the type of facial information patients can access through imagery. OBJECTIVE: The authors wished to determine 1) which lesions abolished face imagery in prosopagnosia, 2) if deficits in perceiving facial structure were paralleled by similar deficits in imagery, and 3) if covert recognition of faces correlated with the degree of residual imagery for faces.

Emotional face recognition deficits and medication effects in pre-manifest through stage-II Huntington's disease.

Facial emotion recognition impairments have been reported in Huntington's disease (HD). However, the nature of the impairments across the spectrum of HD remains unclear. We report on emotion recognition data from 344 participants comprising premanifest HD (PreHD) and early HD patients, and controls. In a test of recognition of facial emotions, we examined responses to six basic emotional expressions and neutral expressions. In addition, and within the early HD sample, we tested for differences on emotion recognition performance between those 'on' vs. 'off' neuroleptic or selective serotonin re

Lateralization of word and face processing in developmental dyslexia and developmental prosopagnosia.

In right-handed adults, face processing is lateralized to the right hemisphere and visual word processing to the left hemisphere. According to the many-to-many account (MTMA) of functional cerebral organization this lateralization pattern is partly dependent on the acquisition of literacy. Hence, the MTMA predicts that: (i) processing of both words and faces should show no or at least less lateralization in individuals with developmental dyslexia compared with controls, and (ii) lateralization in word processing should be normal in individuals with developmental prosopagnosia whereas lateraliz

Chess masters show a hallmark of face processing with chess.

Face processing has several distinctive hallmarks that researchers have attributed either to face-specific mechanisms or to extensive experience distinguishing faces. Here, we examined the face-processing hallmark of selective attention failure--as indexed by the congruency effect in the composite paradigm--in a domain of extreme expertise: chess. Among 27 experts, we found that the congruency effect was equally strong with chessboards and faces. Further, comparing these experts with recreational players and novices, we observed a trade-off: Chess expertise was positively related to the congru

MRI correlates of emotion recognition in vascular dementia: An empty systematic review.

Emotion recognition is a core component of social cognition and has been extensively investigated in several neurodegenerative disorders. However, despite the high prevalence and heterogeneous cerebrovascular pathology of vascular dementia (VaD), evidence on emotion recognition in this population remains fragmented and poorly characterized at the neuroimaging level. This study conducted an empty systematic review to evaluate the current state of MRI-based research and identify critical gaps in the literature. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, systematic searches were performed in Scopus, E

Multiple-stage impairments of unfamiliar face learning in developmental prosopagnosia: Evidence from fMRI repetition suppression and multi-voxel pattern stability.

Individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP) are characterized by severe face recognition deficits, yet it remains unknown how they are hindered in the process of unfamiliar face learning. Here we tracked the changes of neural activation during unfamiliar face repetition in DP with fMRI to reveal their neural deficits in learning unfamiliar faces. At the perceptual level, we found that the bilateral fusiform face area (FFA) in individuals with DP showed attenuated repetition suppression for faces, suggesting an inefficient perceptual analysis for learned faces. At the mnemonic level, indi

Behavioral and neural markers of visual configural processing in social scene perception.

Research on face perception has revealed highly specialized visual mechanisms such as configural processing, and provided markers of interindividual differences -including disease risks and alterations- in visuo-perceptual abilities that traffic in social cognition. Is face perception unique in degree or kind of mechanisms, and in its relevance for social cognition? Combining functional MRI and behavioral methods, we address the processing of an uncharted class of socially relevant stimuli: minimal social scenes involving configurations of two bodies spatially close and face-to-face as if inte

Impact of mask use on face recognition: an eye-tracking study.

We examined how mask use affects performance and eye movements in face recognition and whether strategy change reflected in eye movements is associated with performance change. Eighty-eight participants performed face recognition with masked faces either during learning only, during recognition only, or during both learning and recognition. As compared with the baseline condition where faces were unmasked during both learning and recognition, participants had impaired performance in all three scenarios, with larger impairment when mask conditions during learning and recognition did not match.

Infants rapidly detect human faces in complex naturalistic visual scenes.

Infants respond preferentially to faces and face-like stimuli from birth, but past research has typically presented faces in isolation or amongst an artificial array of competing objects. In the current study infants aged 3- to 12-months viewed a series of complex visual scenes; half of the scenes contained a person, the other half did not. Infants rapidly detected and oriented to faces in scenes even when they were not visually salient. Although a clear developmental improvement was observed in face detection and interest, all infants displayed sensitivity to the presence of a person in a sce

Recognizing emotion from facial expressions: psychological and neurological mechanisms.

Recognizing emotion from facial expressions draws on diverse psychological processes implemented in a large array of neural structures. Studies using evoked potentials, lesions, and functional imaging have begun to elucidate some of the mechanisms. Early perceptual processing of faces draws on cortices in occipital and temporal lobes that construct detailed representations from the configuration of facial features. Subsequent recognition requires a set of structures, including amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex, that links perceptual representations of the face to the generation of knowledge ab

Measuring the accuracy of facial approximations: a comparative study of resemblance rating and face array methods.

The success of facial approximation is thought to depend, at least in part, upon the "accuracy" of the constructed face. However, methods of accuracy assessment are varied and this range in methods may be responsible for the disparate results reported in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine if the accuracy results of one facial approximation were comparable across two different assessment methods (resemblance ratings and simultaneous face array tests using unfamiliar assessors) and if resemblance ratings co-varied with recognition responses. True-positive recognition performa

Not on the face alone: perception of contextualized face expressions in Huntington's disease.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that Huntington's disease mutation-carriers have deficient explicit recognition of isolated facial expressions. There are no studies, however, which have investigated the recognition of facial expressions embedded within an emotional body and scene context. Real life facial expressions are typically embedded in contexts which may dramatically change the emotion recognized in the face. Moreover, a recent study showed that the magnitude of the contextual bias is modulated by the similarity between the actual expression of the presented face and the facial expre

Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation over the Cerebellum Enhances Sadness Recognition in Parkinson's Disease Patients: a Pilot Study.

Emotional processing impairments, resulting in a difficulty to decode emotions from faces especially for negative emotions, are characteristic non-motor features of Parkinson's disease (PD). There is limited evidence about the specific contribution of the cerebellum to the recognition of emotional contents in facial expressions even though patients with cerebellar dysfunction often lose this ability. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether the recognition of facial expressions can be modulated by cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in PD patients. Nine PD patients wer

Recognition of emotions from visual and prosodic cues in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Parkinson Disease (PD) patients are impaired at perceiving emotions from facial and prosodic cues and whether any putative defective performance concerns recognition of a particular emotion. BACKGROUND: Braak et al. [1] demonstrated that in different stages PD pathology involves the nigrostriatal system, the amygdala, and the insular cortex. Discrete brain lesions to these structures can cause selective deficits in recognising facial and prosodic stimuli expressing particular emotions. However, the investigation of facial and prosodic emotional processing in PD pa

A Novel Integration of Face-Recognition Algorithms with a Soft Voting Scheme for Efficiently Tracking Missing Person in Challenging Large-Gathering Scenarios.

The probability of losing vulnerable companions, such as children or older ones, in large gatherings is high, and their tracking is challenging. We proposed a novel integration of face-recognition algorithms with a soft voting scheme, which was applied, on low-resolution cropped images of detected faces, in order to locate missing persons in a challenging large-crowd gathering. We considered the large-crowd gathering scenarios at Al Nabvi mosque Madinah. It is a highly uncontrolled environment with a low-resolution-images data set gathered from moving cameras. The proposed model first performs
