A Comparison of Spinopelvic Alignment and Quality of Life between Farmers and Non-Farmers: A Cross-Sectional Population-Based Study in a Japanese Rural Area.

BACKGROUND: It may be difficult to define what would constitute an abnormal spinal sagittal alignment. The same degree of malalignment may be found both in patients with pain and disability and in asymptomatic individuals. This study focuses on elderly farmers who characteristically have a kyphotic spine, in addition to local residents. It questions whether these patients experience cervical and lower back symptoms, respectively, more often than elderly people who never worked on a farm and do not have a kyphotic deformity. Previous research could have been biased by sampling patients who came…

How it feels to be a dairy farmer: A cross-sectional survey of farm management and well-being of dairy farmers in Western Canada and Ontario.

Dairy farming is widely recognized as a physically and psychologically demanding profession, yet limited quantitative evidence describes the well-being of Canadian dairy producers. This exploratory, hypothesis-generating, cross-sectional study investigated univariable associations between farm management factors-including housing systems, milking technologies, daily responsibilities, and social environments-and the physical, mental, and social well-being of 115 dairy farmers in Western Canada and Ontario. The survey collected detailed information on demographics, work responsibilities, work-li…

BTV-3 vaccination decisions among German livestock farmers: a KAP survey.

Following the emergence of Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) in Germany in late 2023, thousands of outbreaks were reported nationwide during 2024, posing a substantial threat to livestock farming. In response, preventive vaccination was recommended and implemented on a voluntary basis. This study examined German livestock farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to BTV-3 vaccination. An online questionnaire was distributed nationwide in November and December 2024 to assess farmers' willingness to vaccinate and to identify factors influencing vaccination decisions. A total o…

How rural education affects farmers' integrated management of invasive insect pests?

BACKGROUND: Rural education helps manage invasive insect pests (IIPs), but how it affects farmers' integrated IIP management remains unknown. We focused on the nationally concerning fall armyworm in China's main invasion area, developed a multidimensional integrated framework, conducted household interviews with a sample size of 666, and applied multinomial logistic regression to assess farmers' integrated pest management capacity and its associations with educational approaches and strategies. RESULTS: Farmers demonstrated medium to high capacity in recognition, control, and container manage…

Poverty dynamics and the determining factors among East African smallholder farmers.

CONTEXT: Rapid economic development in East Africa is matched by extremely dynamic smallholder livelihoods. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the changes in poverty of smallholder farmers, to evaluate the potential of farm and off-farm activities to alleviate poverty, and to evaluate the potential barriers to poverty alleviation. METHODS: The analyses were based on a panel survey of 600 households undertaken in 2012 and re-visited approximately four years later in four sites in East Africa. The sites represented contrasting smallholder farming systems, linked to urban centres undergoing rapid economic …

Prevalence of work-related asthma among Egyptian farmers in Great Cairo.

Work related asthma (WRA) refers to asthma induced by exposure to sensitizing agents and/or irritants in the workplace leaving health and economic consequences. Early diagnosis can improve the prognosis of WRA permitting sometimes full recovery. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of WRA among Egyptian adult agriculture workers. A multi-center cross sectional study included 150 adult workers from 4 different farms, during the period from 2019 and 2021. All participants were subjected to full medical history, clinical examination, chest x-ray, skin prick test and CBC to detect absolute eo

High Pesticide Exposure Events and Dream-Enacting Behaviors Among US Farmers.

BACKGROUND: Dream-enacting behavior is a characteristic feature of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, the most specific prodromal marker of synucleinopathies. Pesticide exposure may be associated with dream-enacting behaviors, but epidemiological evidence is limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine high pesticide exposure events in relation to dream-enacting behaviors among farmers in the Agricultural Health Study. METHODS: We conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine high pesticide exposure events reported from 1993 to 1997 in relation to dream-enacting behaviors asses…

Occupational pesticide use and self-reported olfactory impairment in US farmers.

OBJECTIVES: Pesticide exposure may impair human olfaction, but empirical evidence is limited. We examined associations between occupational use of 50 specific pesticides and olfactory impairment, both self-reported, among 20 409 participants in the Agricultural Health Study, a prospective cohort of pesticide applicators (mostly farmers, 97% male). METHODS: We used logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations between pesticide use at enrolment (1993-1997) and olfactory impairment reported two decades later (2013-2016), adjusting for…

Understanding risk perception from traditional knowledge of Mayan farmers on Rickettsioses.

Rickettsioses are a group of tick-borne infectious diseases. The clinical presentation is characterised by unspecified manifestations seen in illnesses such as dengue, zika, and chikungunya, so identification is complicated. The greatest impact occurs among the world's poorest populations. Rickettsioses have hardly been studied from a qualitative perspective to show the cultural horizon of the people affected. We aimed to describe the perception of Mayan indigenous farmers about their risk perception for disease transmission. We used the ethnographic method and built life stories. From the per…

Sleep apnea and pesticide exposure in a study of US farmers.

INTRODUCTION: Carbamate and organophosphate pesticides inhibit acetylcholinesterase, and poisoning leads to respiratory depression. Thus, involvement in sleep apnea is plausible, but no data exist at lower levels of exposure. Other pesticides could impact sleep apnea by different mechanisms but have not been studied. Our study examines the associations between pesticide exposure and sleep apnea among pesticide applicators from a US farming population. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 1569 male pesticide applicators, mostly farmers, from an asthma case-control study nested withi…

Mental health in Alberta grain farmers using pesticides over many years.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to organophosphates and certain other pesticides has been related to symptoms of mental ill-health. There is particular interest in whether exposure over many years may result in chronic ill-health. AIMS: To relate lifetime history of pesticide exposure to symptoms and medical records of mental ill-health in elderly grain farmers in Alberta. METHODS: Two populations of grain farmers were identified for study: cohort A (n = 5986), members of an Alberta farm organization in 1983; cohort B (n = 4781), grain farmers registered with the provincial department of agriculture. I…

Health and safety needs of older farmers: part II. Agricultural injuries.

A random sample (N = 87) of older Illinois farmers was surveyed to assess their experiences with traumatic injuries and the relationship between injury rate and age, type of farm activities, amount of stress, and hours of work per week. Farmers' knowledge of safety was assessed. Findings revealed that the number of hours worked, age, and type of farm activities were not significantly related to the number of injuries reported. However, self-reported stress, when stratified by age, was found to be related to injury among farmers aged 55 to 59 years. Also, scores on a farm safety quiz were found…
