Viability selection affects black but not yellow plumage colour in greenfinches.

Much of the debate surrounding the selective forces responsible for the expression of conspicuous plumage colouration is centred on the question of precisely which individual qualities are signalled by carotenoid- and melanin-based pigments. To examine this and other related issues, we performed viability selection analyses in wild-caught captive male greenfinches (Carduelis chloris) in Estonia during winters between 2003 and 2014. Based on our measurements, birds with a darker black eumelanin-based colouration of tail feathers survived better than those whose tail feathers had a paler black c…

Heavy metal and selenium levels in Franklin's Gull (Larus pipixcan) parents and their eggs.

Lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium, selenium, and manganese concentrations were measured in the breast feathers of 25 pairs of Franklin's Gull (Larus Pipixcan) and in their eggs from a breeding colony at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Northwestern Minnesota. Metal concentrations in eggs represent metals sequestered in the egg by females at the time of egg formation; while metal concentrations in parents represent concentrations of metals in blood supply at the time of feather formation. There were no significant sexual differences in metal concentrations in feathers, assuming the male to be…

[Struthiolipeurus rheae Harrison, 1916 (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) infesting ostriches (Struthio camelus) in one farming in the Municipality of Três Rios, RJ].

In Brazil ostriches farming began at the end of 20th Century, to supply the international market of meat, feathers and leather. Feathers are economically important to industry and artisanal sectors. Lice can cause intense pruritus that depending on the intensity of infestation can lead to depreciation of feathers. In Rio de Janeiro there are unknown species of lice infesting ostriches. Thus the objective of this study was to identify the lice that happen in birds from commercial farms in the Municipality of Três Rios. From 2003 to 2006 ostriches were monthly examined for the presence of ectopa…

THE IMPACTS OF ROCK DOVE (COLUMBA LIVIA) PREEN OIL ON WING LOUSE (COLUMBICOLA COLUMBAE) BEHAVIOR AND SURVIVAL.

The avian uropygial gland secretes preen oil, a complex blend of lipids that birds spread on their feathers during preening. Although preen oil is known to help birds maintain feather condition, there has been increasing evidence suggesting preen oil also affects other organisms that reside on bird feathers, such as bacteria, mites, and lice. In a series of experiments, we investigated the effects of Rock Dove (Columba livia) preen oil on the behavior and survival of feather-feeding wing lice (Columbicola columbae). These lice spend the majority of their lives hidden between flight feather bar…

Restorative effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR-32 on the gut microbiota, barrier integrity, and 5-HT metabolism in reducing feather-pecking behavior in laying hens with antibiotic-induced dysbiosis.

The development of abnormal feather-pecking (FP) behavior, where laying hens display harmful pecks in conspecifics, is multifactorial and has been linked to the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Antibiotics affect the gut microbial composition, leading to gut-brain axis imbalance and behavior and physiology changes in many species. However, it is not clear whether intestinal dysbacteriosis can induce the development of damaging behavior, such as FP. The restorative effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR-32 against intestinal dysbacteriosis-induced alternations need to be determined either. The current

Biological Matrices from Cairina moschata as Non-Destructive Biomonitoring Tools to Study Environmental Quality of Urban and Extra-Urban Areas: A Case Study of Palermo (Sicily, Italy).

Biomonitoring is the qualitative observation and the measurement of biosphere parameters aimed at modelling the environment, evaluating its quality, and studying the effects of alterations on different ecological levels. In this work, trace metal concentrations were assessed using non-destructive biomonitoring tools as blood and feathers of the allochthonous aquatic bird Cairina moschata, collected within two areas of the Palermo metropolitan area, Sicily, differently exposed to air pollution: Parco D'Orleans, in a central urban location, and Monreale, southwest of the city centre. Higher conc…

Methylmercury accumulation in tissues and its effects on growth and appetite in captive great egrets.

To test the hypothesis that fledging wading birds would be more at risk from mercury toxicosis than younger nestlings, captive great egret nestlings were maintained as controls or were dosed from 1- to 14-wk-old with 0.5 or 5 mg methylmercury chloride/kg wet weight in fish. Birds dosed with 5 mg/kg suffered from subacute toxicosis at wk 10-12. Growing feather concentrations were the most closely correlated with cumulative mercury consumed per weight. Blood concentrations of mercury increased more rapidly after 9 wk in all groups when feathers stopped growing. Total mercury accumulated in tissu…

Mercury isotopes of key tissues document mercury metabolic processes in seabirds.

Seabirds accumulate significant amounts of mercury (Hg) due to their long-life span together with their medium to high trophic position in marine food webs. Hg speciation and Hg isotopic analyses of total Hg in different tissues (pectoral muscles, liver, brain, kidneys, blood and feathers) were assessed to investigate their detoxification mechanisms. Three species with contrasted ecological characteristics were studied: the Antarctic prion (zooplankton feeder), the white-chinned petrel (pelagic generalist consumer) and the southern giant petrel (scavenger on seabirds and marine mammals). The d…

A native probiotic strain Enterococcus faecalis TMBC 10513 alleviates avian pathogenic Escherichia coli-induced growth impairment and intestinal disruptions in yellow-feathered broilers at the early stage of infection.

This study aimed to probe if a native probiotic Enterococcus faecalis TMBC 10513 could protect the growth and intestinal health of yellow-feathered broilers against avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) challenge. In vitro bacteriostasis of E. faecalis TMBC 10513 against APEC O1 was initially investigated. Subsequently, 240 one-day-old yellow-feathered female broilers were divided into three groups (eight replicates/group): control group, APEC group (received APEC O1 challenge at 7, 8 and 9 d of age) and EF group (APEC-challenged broilers supplemented with 5 × 10⁸ CFU/kg of E. faecalis TMBC

Chromium propionate supplementation to energy- and protein-reduced diets reduces feed consumption but improves feed conversion ratio of yellow-feathered male broilers in the early period and improves meat quality.

Growth performance and carcass traits may be retarded by low nutrient density diets. Organic chromium propionate (CrProp) can improve growth, carcass traits, and meat quality in farmed lambs, white broilers, and fish. Limited data regarding CrProp's impacts on yellow-feathered broilers are available. Eight hundred yellow-feathered male broilers (1-day old) were randomly allocated to 4 dietary groups and reared for 56 d. The trial was a 2 (dietary nutrient density) ×2 (CrProp) factorial arrangement with 4 diets: regular nutrient diet and low nutrient density (LND, reduction in metabolizable ene

Fainalges irritans sp. nov. (Astigmata: Xolalgidae), a new feather mite species causing deplumation in red-and-green macaws Ara chloropterus Gray (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) in Brazil, with a key to species of Fainalges Gaud & Berla, 1963.

Feather mites (Acariformes: Astigmata) are commonly regarded as harmless ectosymbionts of birds. In some cases, however, they may cause pathological conditions in their hosts. A new species of feather mite, Fainalges irritans sp. nov., is described from green-and-red macaws, Ara chloropterus Gray (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) in Brazil, where it is associated with skin irritation and feather loss. An updated key to males and females of the genus Fainalges Gaud & Berla, 1963 is provided, and previous records of feather mites causing injuries in birds are briefly discussed.
