Evaluation of swallowing in children with vomiting after feeding.

Vomiting after feeding is a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and of eosinophilic esophagitis (EE), which are considered to be a cause of infant feeding disorder. The objective of the present study was to evaluate swallowing in children with feeding disorder manifested by vomiting after feeding. Using clinical and videofluoroscopic methods we studied the swallowing of 37 children with vomiting after feeding (mean age=15.4 months), and of 15 healthy children (mean age=20.5 months). In the videofluoroscopic examination the children swallowed a free volume of milk and 5 ml of mashed banana

Associations between feeding patterns and clinical outcomes of Hirschsprung's disease after surgery: propensity score matching approach.

BACKGROUND: Feeding pattern is closely related to physical development and health, but the benefit of breast feeding on clinical outcomes of Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the influences of feeding patterns on postoperative outcomes of HSCR using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. METHODS: The clinical data of 296 patients with HSCR who underwent Laparoscopic-assisted pull-through surgery were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were dichotomized into breast and formula feeding groups. Using propensity score matching (PSM), the two groups

Breastfeeding Practices Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Women at the Postpartum Visit.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is an active area in public health advocacy. Despite documented benefits for infants and mothers, exclusive breastfeeding is not universal. Ethnicity, among other variables, has been shown to influence breastfeeding practice. Research aim: Our study aimed to determine which variables are associated with infant feeding patterns at the postpartum visit; compare the sociodemographic variables associated with infant feeding patterns between Hispanic and non-Hispanic mothers; and determine the odds of exclusive breastfeeding, mixed feeding, and exclusive formula feeding as

A controlled trial of early versus delayed feeding following ligation in the control of acute esophageal variceal bleeding.

BACKGROUND: The impact of feeding after endoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal varices has rarely been thoroughly investigated. We conducted a controlled study to evaluate whether delayed feeding causes a reduced incidence of rebleeding on patients receiving emergency endoscopic therapy for bleeding gastroesophageal varices. METHODS: Cirrhotic patients presenting with acute esophageal variceal bleeding were provided critical treatment through emergency endoscopic variceal ligation. After bleeding from the varices had been arrested, the eligible participants were randomized to two groups. Th

The Effect of Oral Diet Training in Indwelling Nasogastric Tube Patients with Prolonged Dysphagia.

Background: Patients with severe dysphagia are usually fed using a nasogastric tube (NGT). Many patients who receive long-term NGT feeding are unable to obtain sufficient nutrients orally immediately after NGT removal. Thus, a transitional period involving oral diet training is required to transition from NGT feeding to exclusive oral feeding. We aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of oral diet training in indwelling NGT patients with prolonged dysphagia. Methods: A total of 175 patients who were fed using an NGT for more than 4 weeks were enrolled. Their swallowing function was evalua

A comparison of pharmacokinetic methods for in vivo studies of nonmediated glucose absorption.

Two pharmacokinetic methods are used primarily to assess systematic bioavailability of orally dosed water-soluble compounds in vivo, but there have been no direct comparisons of the estimates obtained. The "area under the curve" (AUC) method employs a single oral dose of probe compound(s) followed by multiple blood sampling to obtain plasma concentration time curves. Separate injection of probe(s) followed by multiple blood sampling is used to calculate fractional elimination rate (K(el)) and distribution pool space (S). The "steady state feeding" method relies on ad lib. feeding of a marked d

Adverse Events Following Cow's Milk-Derived Human Milk Fortification: A Nationwide Human Milk Bank Study.

Background: Cow's milk-derived fortifier (CMDF) is widely used to improve the nutritional adequacy of human milk for very preterm infants. Although generally well-tolerated, feeding difficulties may occur during CMDF use. Characterizing these events and their associated clinical factors may improve the understanding of feeding tolerance in routine neonatal practice. Objective: To characterize documented adverse feeding events among infants receiving donor human milk (DHM) and CMDF and to identify clinical characteristics associated with these events. Methods: This retrospective nationwide coho

Discontinuation of Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis after Initiation of Enteral Feeding in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Prospective Multicentre Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Stress ulcer prophylaxis with proton pump inhibitors is commonly used in patients with severe traumatic brain injury, but continued use after the initiation of enteral feeding may be unnecessary and may expose patients to avoidable adverse effects. This study evaluated whether discontinuing proton pump inhibitor prophylaxis after establishment of enteral feeding increases gastrointestinal bleeding risk in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. METHODS: This prospective multicentre randomized controlled trial was conducted at 2 Malaysian hospitals between January 2017 and Dec

Role of baby-led weaning in iron-deficiency anemia and foreign body aspiration in infants: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) encourages self-feeding of finger foods from the start of complementary feeding, in contrast to traditional spoon-feeding (TSF). Concerns have been raised about the potential risks of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and foreign body aspiration (FBA) in BLW. Although BLW is a widely used feeding approach, there are currently no established guidelines specifically addressing its practice. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of BLW in cases of IDA and FBA, and to compare iron-rich food consumption and safe feeding practices between children fed wit

Influence of oromotor functions on motor development and feeding outcomes in children with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE(S): Children with cerebral palsy often face feeding and swallowing issues, the most common of which include aspiration during feeding and potential pulmonary complications. This impairment can influence other areas of development, including gross motor function, fine motor skills, and oromotor functions involved in feeding and swallowing. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the level of gross motor function, feeding level, oromotor structural dysfunction, tongue thrust, and eating performance in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The effect of oral motor intervention with different initiation times to improve feeding outcomes in preterm infants: protocol for a single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Premature infants commonly encounter difficulties with oral feeding, a complication that extends hospital stays, affects infants' quality of life, and imposes substantial burdens on families and society. Enhancing preterm infants' oral feeding skills and facilitating their transition from parenteral or nasal feeding to full oral feeding pose challenges for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) healthcare professionals. Research indicates that oral motor interventions (OMIs) can enhance preterm infants' oral feeding capabilities and expedite the transition from feeding initiation to f

Associations among perinatal factors and age of achievement of full oral feeding in very preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Progress to full oral feeding from a tube or parenteral feeding is a complex process for very preterm infants born before 32 weeks of gestation. The influence of infant characteristics and medical complications on feeding progression has not been studied thoroughly. The aim of this study was to constitute a regression model to estimate the postmenstrual age (PMA) of full oral feeding and the length of transition time from the initiation to completion of oral feeding. METHODS: A chart review was conducted on very preterm infants born between 2005 and 2010 in one medical center in T

Effects of genetic mutations and chemical exposures on Caenorhabditis elegans feeding: evaluation of a novel, high-throughput screening assay.

BACKGROUND: Government agencies have defined a need to reduce, refine or replace current mammalian-based bioassays with testing methods that use alternative species. Invertebrate species, such as Caenorhabditis elegans, provide an attractive option because of their short life cycles, inexpensive maintenance, and high degree of evolutionary conservation with higher eukaryotes. The C. elegans pharynx is a favorable model for studying neuromuscular function, and the effects of chemicals on neuromuscular activity, i.e., feeding. Current feeding methodologies, however, are labor intensive and only

[Going from the tube feeding to the oral feeding in infants].

Tube feeding has greatly improved the vital prognosis in neonatology. However, after a varying time of tube feeding, the return to oral feeding can present quite a challenge for some infants. Moreover, going back home with tube feeding can cause succession of ordeals for the parents. Our purpose is to work out a successful return to home by having prepared the infant for future oral feeding at the very beginning of the hospitalization. Going from minor to serious pathologies, we describe a method aimed at helping the infant's sucking and an alternative method of cup feeding; both intended to a
