A six-year-old girl with congenital sensory neuropathy with anhidrosis (CSNA) presented with bilateral hip dysplasia and subluxation on the right side. Conservative treatment of the hips by closed reduction and a plaster cast was unsuccessful. When aged seven years the patient had an intertrochanteric varus rotation osteotomy on the right side, but subluxation was again evident after five months. A Salter-type pelvic osteotomy was carried out followed by immobilisation, but one year later subluxation was present in the right hip and dislocation in the left. At the age of nine years, the right

INTRODUCTION: Neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, also known as meralgia paresthetica, causes pain and paresthesia to the anterolateral thigh. It commonly results from nerve irritation from extrinsic compression; however, it may occur spontaneously. Symptoms from this condition can be debilitating, and the pain may be ascribed to other conditions leading to delays in diagnosis. Peripheral nerve blockade can be useful both diagnostically and therapeutically for meralgia paresthetica.
CASE REPORT: Two female patients in their sixties presented to the emergency department for chro

Nerve palsy following total hip arthroplasty (THA) can have a serious effect on a patient`s functional prognosis and on cost-effectiveness, and it is the leading cause of THA-associated medical litigation. However, only a few studies focus on femoral nerve palsy (FNP) following THA with the direct anterior approach (DAA). Moreover, several studies have reported that THA with DAA may result in higher complication rates, particularly during the so-called 'learning-curve period' for the surgeon. This study aimed to identify the incidence of FNP following primary THA with DAA, to determine presume

BACKGROUND: Meralgia paresthetica is an entrapment neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve that may cause paresthesias, pain, and sensory loss of the anterior and lateral thigh. Treatment is primarily medical. Surgery is an option for patients who do not respond to medical treatments.
METHODS: Patients whose symptoms did not improve after medical and conservative treatment for at least 3 months were included in this study. These patients underwent neurolysis and decompression surgery and had a mean postoperative follow-up of 38 months. Their pain levels were assessed by the VAS scor

PURPOSE: Chronic inguinodynia is one of the most frequent complications after groin herniorrhaphy. We investigated the retroperitoneal anatomy of the iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, genitofemoral, and lateral femoral cutaneous nerve to prevent direct nerve injury during hernia repairs and to find the most advantageous approach for posterior triple neurectomy.
METHODS: We dissected the inguinal nerves in 30 human anatomic specimens bilaterally. The distances from each nerve and their entry points in the abdominal wall were measured in relation to the posterior superior iliac spine, anterior sup

An unusual epithelioid variant of perineurioma of the groin occurring in a 53-year-old man is described. The lesion appeared to be associated with a femoral nerve branch. The tumour was characterised by the presence of a syncytial proliferation of epithelioid cells, mimicking a meningioma of syncytial type. In addition there was a minor component of a conventional perineurioma. The tumour cells were EMA+, claudin-1+ and collagen type IV+. Bcl 2 was focally expressed. This case highlights the possibility of a common histogenetic pathway for meningiomas and perineuriomas. Although ultrastructura

BACKGROUND: Retrograde intramedullary nailing for tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis (TTCA) is used for severe hindfoot deformities, end-stage arthritis, and limb salvage. The procedure is technically demanding, with complications such as infection, hardware failure, nonunion, osteomyelitis, and possible limb loss or death. This study reports the outcomes and complications of patients undergoing TTCA with a femoral nail, which is widely available and offers an extensive range of lengths and diameters.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 104 patients who underwent 109 TTCAs using a fem

Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is an entrapment neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) that is typically caused by mechanical compression. Piriformis syndrome (PS) is an uncommon neuromuscular disorder resulting from sciatic nerve compression or irritation by the piriformis muscle. The concurrent occurrence of MP and PS is rare and may pose significant diagnostic challenges because of overlapping sensory and radicular-like symptoms. We report the case of a 30-year-old previously healthy man who developed bilateral burning pain over the anterolateral thighs and right gluteal disco

Femoral nerve impairment subsequent to gynaecological operations is well known. Injury to the N. cutaneous femoris lateralis has not yet been reported either in gynaecological or neurological literature. --At the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical School Hannover, 8 cases of neuropathy of this nerve have been observed from 1973 to 1982. They occurred after vaginal as well as after abdominal operations. The cause of the injury may be a short, but extreme hyperextension of the leg while bringing the patient into lithotomy position. During abdominal operations continuous pressure o

We report a case of ischemic neuropathy of the sciatic nerve in a patient with an anterior column fracture of the acetabulum operated by ilioinguinal approach. It resulted from occlusion of the blood supply to the sciatic nerve. There were no signs of a vascular insult until ischemic changes ensued on the 6(th) postoperative day on the lateral part of great toe. The patient underwent crossover femoro-femoral bypass grafting and there was a complete reversal of the ischemic changes at 6 months. The sciatic nerve palsy continued to recover until the end of 1 year; by which time the only deficit

BACKGROUND: Loss of knee extension causes significant impairment. Though nerve-based reconstruction is preferable in cases of femoral nerve palsy or injury, these surgeries are not always appropriate if the pathology involves the quadriceps muscles or presentation too late for muscle reinnervation. Muscle transfers are another option that has been underutilized in the lower extremity. We describe the successful restoration of knee extension by adductor magnus muscle transfer without functional donor morbidity, along with anatomical considerations.
METHODS: Ten fresh frozen cadaveric lower lim

OBJECTIVE: We report here a rare case of anterior superior iliac spine avulsion fracture that presented initially as meralgia paraesthetica.
CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old male sprinter presented with anterior superior iliac spine avulsion fracture, which was not observed on initial plain radiograph of the hip, but was diagnosed by ultrasound. Both clinical presentations and electrophysiological studies indicated meralgia paraesthetica. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve of the thigh was probably compressed by an inguinal haematoma resulting from sartorius muscle strain, which was detected on mu

Nerve injury after total hip replacement is a rare but severe complication. If the nerve lesion becomes evident in the early postoperative phase the lesion is often due to an incorrect implant position, direct nerve injury or vascular injury with manifestation of a hematoma which results in nerve compression. Secondary nerve lesions are more often due to a chronic hematoma with nerve compression. Secondary nerve lesions in particular are often a diagnostic challenge and should lead to an early revision after comprehensive imaging diagnostics.

The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) can be visualized with ultrasound imaging using a high frequency linear transducer. The entrapment of the LFCN, often near the lateral aspect of the inguinal ligament, is accepted as an etiology of meralgia paresthetica (MP). This case report describes an ultrasound-guided, percutaneous technique that utilizes injected fluid to facilitate blunt dissection (or hydrodissection) to perform an external neuroplasty of the LFCN. This procedure resulted in immediate, long-term relief of pain associated with severe, chronic MP. This procedure may potentially
