Iodate (IO3-) can be abiotically reduced by Fe(II) or biotically reduced by the dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis (MR-1) via its DmsEFAB and MtrCAB. However, the intermediates and stoichiometry between the Fe(II) and IO3- reaction and the relative contribution of abiotic and biotic IO3- reduction by biogenic Fe(II) and MR-1 in the presence of Fe(III) remain unclear. In this study, we found that abiotic reduction of IO3- by Fe(II) produced intermediates HIO and I- at a ratio of 1:2, followed by HIO disproportionation to I- and IO3-. Comparative analyses of IO3- redu

Transition metal iron and persistent free radicals (PFRs) both affect the redox properties of biochar, but the electron transfer relationship between them and the coupling reduction mechanism of Cr(VI) requires further investigation. To untangle the interplay between iron and PFRs in biochar and the influences on redox properties, FeCl3-modified rice husk biochar (FBCs) was prepared and its reduction mechanism for Cr(VI) without light was evaluated. The FBCs had higher surface positive charges, oxygen-containing functional groups, and PFRs compared with pristine rice husk biochar (BC). Phenoxy

Simultaneous poisoning by carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide is the major cause of mortality in fire gas accidents. Here, we report on the invention of an injectable antidote against CO and cyanide (CN-) mixed poisoning. The solution contains four compounds: iron(III)porphyrin (FeIIITPPS, F), two methyl-β-cyclodextrin (CD) dimers linked by pyridine (Py3CD, P) and imidazole (Im3CD, I), and a reducing agent (Na2S2O4, S). When these compounds are dissolved in saline, the solution contains two synthetic heme models including a complex of F with P (hemoCD-P) and another one of F with I (hemo

Microbe-catalyzed surface modification is a promising method for the production of special targeting nanomaterials. A bacterium-selective material can be obtained by investigating the microbe-catalyzed mineralization of proteins. Herein, a novel method was fabricated for the biosynthesis of FeS-decorated porphyrin-protein clusters (P-CA@BE) via E. coli (Escherichia coli)-catalyzed bio-Fe(III) reduction and bio-sulfidation of porphyrin (P), caffeic acid (CA), and protein [bovine serum albumin (BSA)] assemblies. The assembly (P-CA@BSA) was identified by spectroscopic methods. Next, the P-CA@BSA

Difficult storage of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), low production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and inefficient Fe(II)/Fe(III) recycling limit the application of the Fenton-like process. Calcium peroxide (CaO2) based iron oxychloride (FeOCl) system was developed for solving these deficiencies, and ciprofloxacin (CIP) was effectively degraded within 20 min treatment. 0.33 mmol/L H2O2 and 2.4 mg/L dissolved oxygen (DO) were produced via CaO2. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance results confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide anion (·O2-) worked as the main ROS

The incorporation of secondary metal atoms into iron oxyhydroxides may regulate the surface chemistry of mediating electron transfer (ET) and, therefore, the biogeochemical pollutant processes such as arsenic (As) in the subsurface and soils. The influence of incorporating two typical metals (Cu and Zn) into a specific {001} hematite facet on O2 activation by surface-bound Fe(II) was addressed. The results showed that Cu-incorporated hematite enhances As(III) oxidation in the presence of Fe(II) under oxic conditions and increases with increasing Cu content. Conversely, Zn incorporation leads t

Wastewater reclamation and reuse are important methods that help to achieve an equilibrium within demand and offer, and also one of the important ways to reduce carbon emission. The existence of secondary effluent organic matter (EfOM) will bring potential threat to the environment in reuse process. Therefore, it is important to develop reclaimed water reuse technology that effectively remove EfOM. In this study, the removal of EfOM performance of ferrates enhanced by FeCl2 (Fe(VI)/Fe(II)) combined with sludge adsorbents (SAs) was evaluated by using the continuous-flow process (FeSDF), which w

Vivianite is often found in reducing environments rich in iron and phosphorus from organic debris degradation or phosphorus mineral dissolution. The formation of vivianite is essential to the geochemical cycling of phosphorus and iron elements in natural environments. In this study, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were selected as the source of phosphorus. Microcosm experiments were conducted to test the evolution of mineralogy during the reduction of polyferric sulfate flocs (PFS) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (S. oneidensis MR-1) at EPS concentrations of 0, 0.03, and 0.3 g/L. Pyrite was applied to Cr(VI) bioremediation as an inorganic electron donor due to the ability to provide electrons, while the role of pyrite in Cr(VI) bioremediation where organics as electron donors remains unknown. Herein a pyrite-based Cr(VI) bioreduction process in the sediment system containing lactate was demonstrated to be effective to detoxify Cr(VI): over 2200 mg L-1 Cr(VI) was continuously removed within 210 h with high reactivity (10.5 mg/(L·h)) all along. High-throughput 16S rDNA gene sequencing indicated that the pyrite could shape a functioning community that electrochemically ac

A facile, sensitive and unmodified Hg2+ homogeneous electrochemical sensor based on bisferrocene signal markers and catalytic hairpin self-assembly (CHA) was built on a gold disk electrode. Three hairpin probes were designed, in which thiol was labeled at both ends of the hairpin probe 1(HP1), while bisferrocene, a redox signal marker, was labeled at both ends of the hairpin probe 2(HP2) and hairpin probe 3(HP3). Due to the Hg2+ mediated thymine-Hg (II)-thymine (T-Hg2+-T) structure, when Hg2+ is introduced, the T-Hg2+-T that occurred between the probe DNA and helper DNA could open the hairpin

Batch experiments have been carried out to study the adsorption of heavy metals in soils, and the migration and transformation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in the soil of a vegetable base were studied by dynamic adsorption and desorption soil column experiments. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of initial concentration and pH value on the adsorption process of Cr(VI). Breakthrough curve were used to evaluate the capacity of Cr(VI) adsorption in soil columns. The results show that the higher the initial concentration, the worse the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI). The adsorp

The efficient conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) has attracted an increasing concern in recent years owing to its threat to the environment. In the present paper, the catalytic role of biogenetic schwertmannite in the reduction of Cr(VI) by sulfide and its mechanism were investigated under different conditions through batch experiments. The results demonstrated that schwertmannite markedly accelerated the removal of Cr(VI) by sulfide, and the rates of the reaction were enhanced by 11, 8 and 6 times, respectively at pH 7.5, 8.0 and 8.8 as compared with control (no schwertmannite). In addition, the

This paper presents the results of kinetic studies to investigate the effect of FeS film formation on the degradation rate of CCl(4) by 99.99% pure metallic iron. The film was formed by submersing metallic iron grains in an oxygen free HCO(3)(-)/CO(3)(2-) electrolyte solution. When the grains had reached a quasi steady-state value of the corrosion potential, Na(2)S((aq)) was injected. Upon injection, a microm thick poorly crystalline FeS film formed immediately on the iron surface. Over time, the iron became strongly corroded and both the FeS film and the metallic iron grains began to crack le

The sonolytic degradation of alkylphenols (APs), such as butylphenol, pentylphenol, octylphenol, and nonylphenol (NP), in water was investigated at a sound frequency of 200 kHz with an acoustic intensity of 6 W cm(-2) under argon, oxygen, and air atmospheres. The sonolytic degradation rate of the APs under the conditions of the present study depended upon their alkyl chain length. The decrease in the degradation rate by the radical scavenging effect was in the range of about 48-82% for APs in the presence of 3 mM 2-methyl-2-propanol. The free radicals play a significant role in the sonolytic d

Degradative solidification/stabilization (DS/S) is a novel remediation technology that combines chemical degradation with conventional solidification/stabilization. The applicability of the Fe(II)-based DS/S to treating chlorinated alkanes was tested by characterizing degradation reactions of carbon tetrachloride (CT) and its daughter products in cement slurries containing Fe(II). Degradation kinetics of CT and chloroform (CF) were generally very rapid with reaction rates comparable to rates that can be obtained with zero-valent iron. Dechlorination reactions of CT proceeded primarily via a hy

In vitro experiments were performed to study the effects of magnesium (Mg) on the absorption of iron (Fe), which have been reported in the literature. Both poorly soluble Mg compounds (Mg oxide and Mg trisilicate) and a readily soluble Mg salt (Mg aspartate hydrochloride trihydrate) were studied along with ferrous gluconate. The influence of the addition of Mg aspartate hydrochloride, Mg oxide and Mg trisilicate on the pH of aqueous acidic solutions was examined initially. As expected, the Mg salts employed as antacids (Mg oxide and Mg trisilicate) were found to have a potent neutralising effe

Although iron is a bio-essential metal, dysregulated iron acquisition and metabolism result in production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to the Fenton catalytic reaction, which activates ferroptotic cell death pathways. The lipophilic Fe(III)-chelator chlorquinaldol (L; i.e., 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline) strongly favors the formation of a highly stable binuclear Fe(III) complex [(L2Fe)2(μ-O)] (1) that can mimic the function of the Fe(III)-transferrin complex in terms of the strong binding to Fe(III) and facile release of Fe(II) when the metal center is reduced. It should be

Whilst the oxidation of Fe(II) in aerobic conditions has been studied thoroughly, an in-depth knowhow on the fate or stability of Fe(II) in solutions with near-neutral pH under anaerobic conditions is still lacking. Here, we experimentally investigated the kinetics of Fe(II) oxidation in solutions with pH ranging between ∼5 and 9, under aerobic (when solutions were in equilibrium with atmospheric oxygen) and anaerobic conditions (when the dissolved oxygen concentration was ∼10-10 mol/L), by colorimetric means. Experimental results and thermodynamic considerations presented here, show that Fe(I

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have garnered significant attention as a promising platform for reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent disease treatment, owing to their remarkable biocompatibility and Fenton catalytic activity. However, the low catalytic activity of IONPs is a major hurdle in their clinical translation. To overcome this challenge, IONPs of different compositions are examined for their Fenton reaction under pharmacologically relevant conditions. The results show that wüstite (FeO) nanoparticles exhibit higher catalytic activity than magnetite (Fe3 O4 ) or maghemite (γ-Fe2 O3
