The 2013 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Study Group (FASDSG) meeting was held in Orlando (Grand Cypress), FL with the theme "Developing Brain-Based Interventions for Individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders." Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders have significant impairments in cognitive functioning and behavioral regulation skills, which lead to a lifetime of challenges for themselves and their families; thus, developing interventions that remediate or compensate for these deficits is of great importance. The conference included 2 keynote presentations, FASt data talks, aw…

Caregiver Stress in Foster and Adoptive Parents of Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Foster and adoptive parents of 71 children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) report on developmental and behavioral characteristics, family stress, coping resources and their satisfaction with support. The data reveal an elevated rate of social and emotional problems in the children. In spite positive individual and social resources, the foster and adoptive parents feel a high level of caregiver stress. 30 % of them rate the support they receive from pediatric, therapeutic or educational services…

In the United States, approximately 80 000 women consume ethanol through all 3 trimesters of pregnancy each year. In this article, we review … management plan and anticipatory management to prevent the development of secondary disabilities in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Child neurologists play a key role in diagnosis and the development of appropriate intervention programs for affected children and their families.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is characterized by a constellation of behavioral and physiological abnormalities, including learning and sensory deficits. There is growing evidence that abnormalities of neuronal plasticity underlie these deficits. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which prenatal alcohol exposure disrupts neuronal plasticity remain elusive. Recently, studies with the barrel and the visual cortex as models to study the effects of early alcohol exposure on neuronal plasticity shed light on this subject. In this Mini-Review, we discuss the effects of ethano

Brain structural abnormalities and neurocognitive dysfunction have been observed in individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Little is known about how white matter integrity is related to these functional and morphological deficits. We used a combination of diffusion tensor and T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate white matter integrity in individuals with FASDs and related these findings to neurocognitive deficits. Seventeen children and adolescents with FASDs were compared with 19 typically developing age- and gender-matched controls. Lower fractional anisotro…

The goal of this project was to examine the profile of executive function (EF) deficits and age-related differences among children with FASD. Twenty-nine children with FASD (8 to 16 years of age) completed 8 tests from the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS). They had difficulty on many components of EF including cognitive flexibility, inhibition, some measures of verbal fluency, abstract thinking, deductive reasoning, hypothesis testing, problem solving, and concept formation. A distinctive profile emerged with performance being poorest on the card sorting test and relatively high

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are among the most common developmental disorders but are underdiagnosed in part because of the inaccessibility of valid screening tools. The goal of this study was to test the ability of a novel online cognitive and behavioral screening tool to accurately distinguish youth with histories of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) from the comparison group.
METHODS: Children were tested at home with an online cognitive and behavioral test battery, Brief Assessment of Individual Neurobehavior-online version (BRAIN-online). Participants included child…

Individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) present a range of neurodevelopmental deficits (e.g., inattention, hyperactivity, and executive dysfunction) which have shown marked overlap with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), making differential diagnosis challenging. While rates of comorbidity are high, evidence has suggested there are important distinctions between neurodevelopmental phenotypes. To understand these distinctions, we evaluated whether proposed neurobehavioral disorder associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (ND-P…

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) encompass a continuum of neurodevelopmental and physical impairments resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Despite widespread recognition of ethanol's teratogenic effects, the clinical variability observed in FASD suggests a multifactorial etiology involving genetic, biochemical, epigenetic, and environmental influences. This review provides an integrative analysis of how genetic polymorphisms in key alcohol-metabolizing enzymes (ADH1B, ADH1C, ALDH2, CYP2E1, and CAT) modulate maternal and fetal susceptibility to ethanol and its toxic metabolite…

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) encompass a spectrum of clinical manifestations resulting from maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. This condition presents with diverse anomalies including intrauterine and extrauterine growth retardation, phenotypic abnormalities, cerebral structural anomalies, cognitive delays, and behavioral abnormalities. Regrettably, FASD remains an irreversible and epigenetic condition, with total abstention from alcohol during pregnancy being the sole effective preventive measure due to the absence of a viable therapy. Diagnosis typically occurs postnat…

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) encompass a range of conditions caused by prenatal alcohol consumption, leading to physical, behavioral, and learning challenges. It is a significant cause of preventable mental disability, with a prevalence rate of 7.7 cases per 1,000 individuals in the Western world. FASD includes various categories such as alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders (ARND), alcohol-related birth defects (ARBD), partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS), and FAS. Mortality is primarily linked to external causes and individuals with FAS may have a projected lifespan of aro…

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a group of preventable and nongenetic birth defects caused by prenatal alcohol exposure that can result in a range of cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and functioning deficits, as well as craniofacial dysmorphology and other congenital defects. During embryonic development, neural crest cells (NCCs) play a critical role in giving rise to many cell types in the developing embryos, including those in the peripheral nervous system and craniofacial structures. Ethanol exposure during this critical period can have detrimental effects on NCC induction, mi…

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are developmental disabilities that are estimated to occur in 2-5% of elementary school children and that negatively impact a child's ability to function without support. Timely diagnosis-informed interventions are crucial to optimizing the developmental trajectory of children with FASD. The true prevalence of FASD among children receiving services for developmental disabilities is unknown.
METHODS: An FASD prevalence study was carried out between 2011 and 2014 among a sample of 5- to 7-year-old children who were receiving services provided …

BACKGROUND: This paper reports findings from the first longitudinal study on the evolution of the physical phenotypes of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and partial FAS (PFAS) from early childhood through adolescence.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 155 children (78 males and 77 females) born to women recruited at an antenatal clinic serving a Cape Coloured (mixed ancestry) population in Cape Town, South Africa. Two expert FASD dysmorphologists, blind regarding prenatal alcohol exposure, independently evaluated each child's growth and dysmorphology at 4 clinics conducted over an 11-year period.

Relationships between neurodevelopmental functioning and hemodynamic changes in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) were contrasted between children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and children who differed relative to their history of PAE and the presence of other neurodevelopmental impairment. For all groups, deoxygenated hemoglobin (HBR) levels in the medial PFC area were negatively related to externalizing problems and levels in the medial and right lateral PFC were positively related to errors on a cognitive inhibition task. Hemodynamic changes in the medial and right lateral PFC of children
