OBJECTIVE: Prenatal imaging has identified alterations of brain growth in fetuses with congenital heart disease. However, little is known about the timing of altered brain development and its occurrence in specific congenital heart disease subgroups. This magnetic resonance imaging study aimed to identify early (median, 25 gestational weeks [GW]) changes in fetal total brain (TBV), gray matter (GMV), and subcortical brain (SBV) volumes in Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) cases in utero.
STUDY DESIGN: Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (1.5 Tesla) was performed in 24 fetuses who were diagnosed with TOF

BACKGROUND: The brachial plexus is an important anatomical structure. It can be damaged in both the perinatal and postnatal periods as a result of injury. The available literature does not provide much discussion of the development of the brachial plexus in human fetuses.
OBJECTIVES: The goal of the study was a mathematical analysis of fetal brachial plexus growth and geometry.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study examined 220 human brachial plexuses, derived from 110 fetuses (including 50 females - 45.45%) aged 14-32 weeks of fetal life, with a crown-rump length (CRL) ranging from 80 to 233 mm.

BACKGROUND: Maternal alcohol abuse during pregnancy causes physical, cognitive and behavioural impairments in the child. Deficits are irreversible and persist into adulthood. It was the objective of this study to investigate the specific problems and challenges faced by young adults with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).
PATIENTS: We examined the biographical development and living situation of 60 adult patients with FAS. In their childhood, all the patients had been diagnosed with FAS in the Muenster University hospital.
METHODS: Using a structured interview, we asked for the occupational caree

Glypicans represent a family of cell surface proteoglycans. Loss-of-function mutations in the human glypican-3 (GPC3) gene results in the Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome, characterized by severe malformations and pre- and postnatal overgrowth. Because the expression of GPC3 during human embryonic and fetal periods remains largely unknown, we investigated by immunohistochemistry its pattern of expression during four periods of human development covering the embryonic period (P1) from 5 to 8 weeks of development, and the fetal periods (P2, P3 and P4) from 9 to 28 weeks of development. Hepatocytes

BACKGROUND: Appropriate maternal nutrition and body weight gain during pregnancy is well established as a major factor in healthy prenatal development in humans. Given the role of nutrition and body weight gain in normal development, pharmaceuticals intended to reduce appetite and promote weight loss will generate developmental toxicity data that may be challenging to interpret. To aid with this, the effects of feed restriction, and subsequent reduction in maternal body weight gain, on embryo-fetal development was investigated in the rabbit.
METHODS: Groups of 15 pregnant New Zealand White ra…

Studies on monozygotic twins with concordant leukemia and retrospective scrutiny of neonatal blood spots of patients with leukemia indicate that chromosomal translocations characteristic of pediatric leukemia often arise prenatally, probably as initiating events. The modest concordance rate for leukemia in identical twins ( approximately 5%), protracted latency, and transgenic modeling all suggest that additional postnatal exposure and/or genetic events are required for clinically overt leukemia development. This notion leads to the prediction that chromosome translocations, functional fusion

The extracellular glycoproteins fibrillin-1 and fibrillin-2 are major components of connective tissue microfibrils. Mutations in the fibrillin-1 and fibrillin-2 genes are responsible for the phenotypical manifestations of Marfan syndrome and congenital contractural arachnodactyly respectively, which emphasizes their essential roles in developmental processes of various tissues. Consistent with this last notion, organ culture experiments have indirectly suggested morphogenic roles for fibrillins in lung and kidney development. In order to contribute to the understanding of the roles of fibrilli

Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) was introduced into clinical practice 30 years ago and spread very rapidly in most developed countries. The early optimism that EFM would lead to a marked reduction in fetal neurological injury has not been realized; however, it is now recognized that most such damage is unrelated to perinatal events. Clinical trials have shown that although EFM does reduce the incidence of intrapartum asphyxia, its use is also associated with an increase in cesarean sections. Abnormal fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns are poor predictors of fetal depression at birth when used w

The late fetal effect of chronic alcoholization in two strains of mice (RAP and RAP female x CBAT6 male) was controlled. Unilateral ocular anomalies (retinal folding, various degrees of ocular disorganization) were detected in 16% of the alcoholized RAP female x CBAT6 male group. The findings are discussed in connection with other experimental models of alcohol embryo and fetopathy.

BACKGROUND: The 3Rs (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement) principle is driving the need for alternative methods in animal testing. Despite advancements in in vitro testing, complex systemic toxicity tests still necessitate in vivo approaches. The aim of this study was to develop a developmental toxicity test protocol using the Iberian ribbed newt (Pleurodeles waltl) as a model organism, integrating AI image analysis for embryo selection to improve test accuracy and reproducibility.
METHODS: We established a developmental toxicity test protocol based on the zebrafish test. Gonadotropin was admi

Paternal influences on offspring development extend beyond Mendelian inheritance, but how sire genetics shape fetal transcription and cis-regulatory landscapes across tissues is unclear. Using a reciprocal backcross in pigs (F1×German Landrace vs. F1×Piétrain) and a haplotype-agnostic RNA-seq pipeline, we profiled six fetal tissues to test sire-breed effects. We identified paternal breed-driven transcriptional divergence, with 1,176 genes differentially expressed. Transcriptional divergence was most pronounced in metabolic tissues, revealing a tissue-specific trade-off: F1 × GL conceptuses pri

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis coordinates metabolic, immune, and behavioral responses to a changing environment. Its molecular effectors are the nuclear receptors for glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids (the GRs/MRs), encoded by nr3c1/nr3c2. The MR serves as the high-affinity sensor of basal hormone concentrations, whereas the GR amplifies the stress response and mediates negative feedback. Despite their shared domain architecture, the receptors have diverged functionally: isoform composition, post-translational modifications, and the complement of co-regulators together det

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of fetal growth restriction (FGR) on cortical maturation and fissure development using detailed neurosonography. We compared cortical grades and fissure measurements between FGR and healthy fetuses to determine if growth restriction is linked to delayed cortical maturation in specific regions.
METHODS: This observational case-control study included singleton pregnancies at 31-35 weeks of gestation between January 2025 and September 2025. FGR was diagnosed according to the Delphi consensus criteria. All participants underwent obstetric ultr

Ovarian cyst is a frequent abdominal tumor in female fetuses (1/2,600 live births), but its prenatal diagnosis can be challenging in the context of ambiguous genitalia. The most common cause of genital virilization in female fetuses is congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), which results from the overproduction of androgen hormones. These hormones may influence the fetal ovary in a way comparable to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in adults, leading to the development of an ovarian cyst that may regress. We present the case of a fetus prenatally diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst and ambigu

Prenatal inflammation is a recognized risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the neural pathways linking in utero immune exposure to later outcomes remain unclear. We examined whether chronic placental inflammation (CPI), a sustained immune response within the placenta, is associated with fetal brain functional connectivity differences and later ASD traits. A cohort of 105 pregnant individuals (85.7% African American/Black, 1.0% Asian American, 4.8% Bi-racial, 4.8% White, 1.0% Other, 2.9% Missing) underwent fetal resting-state fMRI between 24 and 38 weeks' gestation. The complex genetic mechanisms underlying human ovary development can give rise to clinical phenotypes if disrupted, such as Primary (or Premature) Ovarian Insufficiency and Differences of Sex Development. We combine single-nuclei RNA sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing, and micro-focus computed tomography to elucidate the anatomy and transcriptional landscape of the human fetal ovary across key developmental timepoints (Carnegie Stage 22 until 20 weeks post conception). We show the marked growth and distinct morphological changes within the fetal ovary at the critical timepoint of germ cell expan

Placental insufficiency is one of the major causes of fetal growth restriction (FGR), a significant pregnancy disorder in which the fetus fails to achieve its full growth potential in utero. As well as the acute consequences of being born too small, affected offspring are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases in later life. The placenta and heart develop concurrently, therefore placental maldevelopment and function in FGR may have profound effect on the growth and differentiation of many organ systems, including the heart. Hence, understanding the key
