Central odontogenic fibroma: an international multicentric study of 62 cases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report the clinicopathologic features of 62 cases of central odontogenic fibroma (COdF). STUDY DESIGN: Clinical and radiographic data were collected from the records of 13 oral pathology laboratories. All cases were microscopically reviewed, considering the current World Health Organization classification of tumors and were classified according to histopathologic features. RESULTS: There were 43 females and 19 males (average age 33.9 years; range 8-63 years). Clinically, COdF lesions appeared as asymptomatic swellings, occurring similarly in the maxill…

Intraoral Approach for Surgical Treatment of Psammomatoid Juvenile Ossifying Fibroma.

Psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma (PJOF) is a rare benign tumor that usually affects the paranasal sinuses, orbit, and skull. In most cases, extensive incisions are necessary for full access to the tumor site. The aim of this paper is to report a case of extensive PJOF in which an intraoral surgical approach was performed with complete excision of the tumor. A female patient, 18-year old had a deforming volume increase in the region of the left facial middle third with an approximate evolution time of 2 years. She complained of headache, epiphora in the left eye, and total obstruction of…

Ossifying fibroma arising from the zygomatic arch: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a rare type of tumor characterized by fibrous tissue proliferation with cementum- or bone-like hard tissue formation. Since its first report by Montgomery in 1927, several cases of OF have been reported; however, no cases of OF arising from the zygomatic arch have been reported. Herein, we report a case of OF arising from the zygomatic arch. CLINICAL CASE SUMMARY: A 70-year-old female visited our department in February 2017 because of a gradually growing osseous protrusion in the right zygomatic region, which she was aware of since the previous 6 months…

Aggressive ossifying fibroma of right ethmoidal sinus: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign fibro-osseous lesion seen in the bones of the head and neck area. It is mostly found in the mandible followed by the maxilla and rarely in the paranasal sinuses along with the orbit and skull bones. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old male patient presented with headache and incidental finding of a right ethmoidal sinus ossifying fibroma by paranasal-sinuses CT scan and MRI of the face. A flexible fiber-optic nasal endoscopy examination revealed a right side fullness. A non-contrasted CT scan of the paranasal sinus showed hyperdense lesion at the ri…

Juvenile ossifying fibroma with aneurysamal bone cyst: a case report.

The fibro osseous lesions of the jaws represent a diverse group of entities that are characterized by replacement of normal bone by a fibrous connective tissue matrix, with in which varying amounts of osteoid, immature and mature bone and in some instances, cementum like material are deposited. Fibro osseous lesions of the jaws include developmental (hamartomatous) lesions, reactive or dysplastic processes and neoplasms. Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a unique fibro osseous neoplasm. It has 2 histopathological variants (1) Trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma (TrJOF) and (2) Psammomatoid…

Bimaxillary presentation of central ossifying fibroma: a unique aggressive entity.

Central ossifying fibroma is a benign neoplasm, having slow growing nature. Some rare lesions show very aggressive nature, multifocal appearance and reach up to a very massive size. So, these kinds of cases require special attention for their treatment. A unique case of central ossifying fibroma with aggressive nature, multifocal appearance is reported. This case shows growth both in maxilla and mandible with maxillary lesion massive in size involving maxillary sinus. There have not been any such cases reported so far in the literature showing bimaxillary growth of ossifying fibroma.

Desmoplastic fibroma: report of rare lesion in unusual craniofacial location.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign but aggressive intraosseous tumor. These lesions are categorized as central tumors of bone. They are composed of small fibroblasts in a setting of abundant extracellular material, which is rich in collagen. DF represents fewer than 0.1% of all bony tumors. They can be found in any part of the skeleton. Based upon on our literature review, we believe this is the second reported case of desmoplastic fibroma occurring in the zygoma area.

Cutaneous fibroma in a captive common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina).

An adult female common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) had a mass on the plantar surface of the right forelimb that was removed surgically. Microscopical examination revealed many spindle cells with mild anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and a surrounding collagenous stroma. There were no mitoses. Immunohistochemistry showed that the spindle cells expressed vimentin, but not desmin. A diagnosis of cutaneous fibroma was made. Tumours are reported uncommonly in chelonian species. Cutaneous fibroma has been diagnosed in an alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii), but not previously …

Resection of left ventricular fibroma with subacute papillary muscle rupture.

Cardiac fibroma is a rare, benign tumor that occurs chiefly in children and rarely in adults. Most fibromas occur in the ventricles and may reach a very large size that complicates surgical removal. Herein, we report the case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with shortness of breath, fatigue, and lightheadedness and was found to have a 6 × 8-cm fibroma of the left ventricle. Surgical resection was successful, but 7 days later she developed sudden-onset severe mitral regurgitation due to partial disruption of the posterolateral papillary muscle. Mitral valve replacement with a 27-mm mechani…

[Prepubertal-type vulva fibroma: a clinicopathological study of two cases].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathological features, immnophenotype and differential diagnosis of prepubertal-type vulva fibroma (PVF). METHOD: Clinical, radiological and pathological features of 2 cases of PVF were analyzed along with a literature review. RESULTS: Both patients were females of 8.5 and 54 years of age, presented with recurrent unilateral mass at the labium major respectively. Grossly, cut surface of the tumor appeared as the gray fibrous tissue without any definited lump detected. Histologically, the ill-circumscribed lesion located predominantly in the deep dermis with an …

[Ileal intussusception, caused by fibroma, after cholecystectomy performed under microlaparotomy].

The development of minimally invasive surgery for the management of cholelithiasis has been based on the premise that abdominal exploration during cholecystectomy is unnecessary. In the current study, 575 patients undergoing micro- and modern mini-laparotomy cholecystectomy were evaluated to assess the incidence and significance of undetected intra-abdominal pathology. In one instance an intussusception occurred from an ileal fibroma. This patient required a reoperation on the 20th postoperative day, after the removal of the porcellaneous gallbladder. After the primary resection of the tumor a…

Fourth ventricular hemangioblastoma associated with pheochromocytoma and renal medullary fibroma.

Intraventricular hemangioblastomas are exceptionally rare. Of the cases described in the literature, very few were associated with von Hippel-Lindau disease. We present a highly unusual case of a fourth ventricular hemangioblastoma associated with a pheochromocytoma and a renal medullary fibroma. This may represent a forme fruste of the von Hippel-Lindau complex. A workup for papilledema resulted in the discovery of this rare finding.

[Benign pleural fibroma. An anatomo-clinical study of 10 cases].

We present an anatomical-clinical analysis of ten cases of benign pleural fibroma. This tumour was discovered in a systematic fashion in 8 of the 10 cases and fortuitously in one. Recent radiological examinations enabled the diagnosis to be suspected. Computerised tomography most often precisely identified the pleural topography and imagery by nuclear magnetic resonance in one case visualised fibrous tissue (with a zone of low signals on the scale in T2). The final diagnosis was achieved at the same time as the treatment when an exploratory thoracotomy was performed. In all the cases there was…

[Ethmoidal fibroma in an 18-month-old infant (author's transl)].

A case of ethmoidal fibroma in an 18-month-old infant is reported, and nosological, histological, and pathogenic features of this rare affection discussed. Though similar in some respects to Jaffe Lichtensteins fibrous dysplasia in its localized form, it differs, in that it sometimes runs a rapid course and has a tendency to relapse.
