Infants’ tendency to focus on socially relevant cues is commonly referred to as ‘social attention’ and is often conceptualized as a unified construct. However, few studies have examined the concordance among measures that fall under this label. In this study, we assessed 50 ten-month-old infants using three common measures of social visual attention: eye (versus mouth) preference, gaze following, and face preference (versus non-social objects). We also examined their association with concurrent parent-rated socio-communicative abilities. No significant associations were found among the gaze me

Ocular fixations contain microsaccades, drift and tremor. We report an increase in the slope of linear fixation drift as a function of time-on-task (TOT). We employed a large dataset (322 subjects, multiple visits per subject). Subjects performed a random saccade task. The task, in which the target dot jumped randomly every one sec, was 100 sec in duration. For each fixation, we regressed eye position against time across multiple segment lengths (50, 100, 300, and 500 ms). We started with the first sample and continued until no further regressions were possible based on the segment length bein

Gaze-following, the ability to shift one's own attention to places or objects others are looking at, is essential for social interactions. Single unit recordings from the monkey cortex and neuroimaging work on the human and monkey brain suggest that a distinct region in the temporal cortex, the gaze-following patch (GFP), underpins this ability. Since previous studies of the GFP have relied on correlational techniques, it remains unclear whether gaze-following related activity in the GFP indicates a causal role rather than being just a reverberation of behaviorally relevant information produce

Visual object tracking in animals as diverse as felines, frogs, and fish supports behaviors including predation, predator avoidance, and landscape navigation. Decades of experimental results show that a rigidly body-fixed tethered fly in a "virtual reality" visual flight simulator steers to follow the motion of a vertical bar, thereby "fixating" it on visual midline. This behavior likely reflects a desire to seek natural features such as plant stalks and has inspired algorithms for visual object tracking predicated on robust responses to bar velocity, particularly near visual midline. Using a

Integrated motor behaviors involving ocular motion-associated movements of the head, neck, pinna, and parts of the face are commonly seen in animals orienting to a visual target. A number of coordinated movements have also been observed in humans making rapid gaze shifts to horizontal extremes, which may be vestiges of these. Since such integrated mechanisms point to a nonpathological coactivation of several anatomically separate cranial circuits in humans, it is important to see how the different pairs of integrative motor behaviors with a common trigger (i.e., ocular motion) manifest in rela

PURPOSE: This study reports the repeatability of 20 s-duration fixation stability measurements recorded with the Macular Integrity Assessment (MAIA) microperimeter in patients with central vision loss, in contrast to the Nidek MP1 microperimeter.
METHODS: Fixation stability was recorded in 39 eyes of 25 patients with macular disease using MAIA and the MP1 for 20 s intervals, twice for each eye, with each instrument. Twenty eyes were identified as the better eye (BE) and 19 eyes as the worse eye (WE). Fixation stability was quantified with the 95% bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA), logarit

Girls with fragile X syndrome (FXS) often manifest significant symptoms of avoidance, anxiety, and arousal, particularly in the context of social interaction. However, little is currently known about the associations among neurobiological, biobehavioral such as eye gaze pattern, and social-cognitive dysfunction in real-world settings. In this study, we sought to characterize brain network properties and eye gaze patterns in girls with FXS during natural social interaction. Participants included 42 girls with FXS and 31 age- and verbal IQ-matched girls (control). Portable functional near-infrar

BACKGROUND: The lesion detection rate of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) varies depending on the degree of experience of the endoscopist and anatomical blind spots. This study aimed to identify gaze patterns and blind spots by analyzing the endoscopist's gaze during real-time EGD.
METHODS: Five endoscopists were enrolled in this study. The endoscopist's eye gaze tracked by an eye tracker was selected from the esophagogastric junction to the second portion of the duodenum without the esophagus during insertion and withdrawal, and then matched with photos. Gaze patterns were visualized as a ga

Callous-unemotional traits have been associated with difficulties in identifying and responding to others' emotions. To inform this line of research, the current study investigated the eye gaze behavior of children (n = 59; mean-age = 6.35) with varying levels of callous-unemotional (CU) traits with the use of eye-tracker methodology, as well as their ability to accurately identify emotional expressions. Participating children were selected from a large screening sample (N = 1283). Main findings supported a reduced fixation rate to the eye-region and an increased fixation in the mouth area of

During a visual search for a target among distractors, observers do not fixate every location in the search array. Rather processing is thought to occur within a Functional Visual Field (FVF) surrounding each fixation. We argue that there are three questions that can be asked at each fixation and that these imply three different senses of the FVF. 1) Can I identify what is at location XY? This defines a resolution FVF. 2) To what shall I attend during this fixation? This defines an Attentional FVF. 3) Where should I fixate next? This defines an Exploratory FVF. We examine FVFs 2&3 using eye mo

BACKGROUND: Understanding the salient features that draw focus when assessing aesthetics is important for maximizing perceived outcomes. Eye-tracking technology provides an unbiased method for determining the features that draw attention when evaluating aesthetic plastic surgery. This study aimed to characterize viewing patterns of plastic surgery patients and laypeople when assessing facial cosmetic procedure images.
METHODS: Twenty women who previously underwent cosmetic procedures and twenty women without a history of cosmetic procedures were shown sixteen pairs of preprocedure and postpro

The frontal eye field (FEF) is a critical region for the deployment of overt and covert spatial attention. Although investigations in the macaque continue to provide insight into the neural underpinnings of the FEF, due to its location within a sulcus, the macaque FEF is virtually inaccessible to electrophysiological techniques such as high-density and laminar recordings. With a largely lissencephalic cortex, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a promising alternative primate model for studying FEF microcircuitry. Putative homologies have been established with the macaque FEF on the ba

Introduction - Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common form of cyanotic congenital heart disease (CHD). Adults with surgically uncorrected forms of this condition are extremely rare, since operation is recommended in childhood to prevent cyanosis. Cyanotic CHD increases the risk of thromboembolic events. An endothelial dysfunction caused by chronic hypoxia and shear stress due to rheological alterations with a platelet dysfunction appear to be the explanation behind this finding. Paramedian thalamic infarction causing vertical gaze palsy without midbrain involvement is an infrequent findi

Simultaneous vision is an increasingly used solution for the correction of presbyopia (the age-related loss of ability to focus near images). Simultaneous Vision corrections, normally delivered in the form of contact or intraocular lenses, project on the patient's retina a focused image for near vision superimposed with a degraded image for far vision, or a focused image for far vision superimposed with the defocused image of the near scene. It is expected that patients with these corrections are able to adapt to the complex Simultaneous Vision retinal images, although the mechanisms or the ex

During visual fixations, the eyes are directed so that the image of the target (object of interest) falls on the fovea. An exception to this rule was described in macaque monkeys (though not in humans): dark background induces a gaze shift upwards, sometimes large enough to shift the target's image off the fovea. In this article we address an aspect not previously rigorously studied, the time course of the upshift. The time course is critical for determining whether the upshift is indeed an attribute of visual fixation or, alternatively, of saccades that precede the fixation. These alternative

In recent years it has been shown to be possible to create a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) using non-invasive electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements of covert visual spatial attention. For example, that both Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) and parieto-occipital alpha band activity have been shown to be sensitive to covert attention and this has been exploited to provide simple communication control without the need for any physical movement. In this study, potential improvements in the speed and accuracy of such a BCI are investigated by exploring the possibility of incorpor

Reading requires three-dimensional motor control: saccades bring the eyes from left to right, fixating word after word; and oblique saccades bring the eyes to the next line of the text. The angle of vergence of the two optic axes should be adjusted to the depth of the book or screen and--most importantly--should be maintained in a sustained manner during saccades and fixations. Maintenance of vergence is important as it is a prerequisite for a single clear image of each word to be projected onto the fovea of the eyes. Deficits in the binocular control of saccades and of vergence in dyslexics h

BACKGROUND: Monofixation syndrome is characterized by small-angle strabismus with vergence fusional amplitudes and "peripheral fusion." Although it is thought to be a relatively stable condition, some patients with this syndrome deteriorate, resulting in an increasing heterotropia, sometimes associated with diplopia. Deteriorated monofixation syndrome is well known among clinicians; however, there are no studies describing the course and outcomes for these patients.
PURPOSE: To assess the clinical characteristics, course, and response to therapy of patients with deteriorated monofixation synd

In a display with a stationary and a moving object, subjects saccaded towards one of the objects and had to detect intrasaccadic changes in position or orientation of either the saccade target or the saccade flanker. Compared to performance for stationary objects, displacement detection for translating objects was better and unaffected by saccadic status of the changed object. This pattern proved to be specific to position changes in translating objects and did not generalize to other types of motion (i.e., rotation) or to other types of intrasaccadic changes (i.e., orientation shifts).
