Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxygluose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is a useful tool for evaluating disease activity in sarcoidosis including cardiac involvement. A 67-year-old patient who developed atrioventricular block requiring permanent pacemaker implantation was diagnosed with cardiac sarcoidosis. The patient did not undergo steroid or immunosuppressive therapy but underwent serial 18F-FDG PET examination, which showed spontaneous reduction in the myocardial FDG uptake, indicating the remission of immune-inflammatory activity. Although the global systolic function remained preserv…

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of infiltrating macrophages in murine models of single and double mutation head and neck tumors using a novel fluorine-19 (19 F) MRI technology.
METHODS: Tumor cell lines single-hit/SCC4 or double-hit/Cal27, with mutations of TP53 and TP53 & FHIT, respectively, were injected bilaterally into the flanks of (n = 10) female mice. With tumors established, perfluorocarbon nanoemulsion was injected intravenously, which labels in situ predominantly monocytes and macrophages. Longitudinal spin density-weighted 19 F MRI data enabled quantification of the macrophage burden…

Diffuse increased fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) avidity on positron emission tomography (PET) scans has been demonstrated in patients with chronic thyroiditis, likely secondary to increased inflammatory cell glucose uptake. A complex association has been demonstrated between breast cancer and thyroid disease, although the mechanism remains elusive. Development of chronic thyroiditis and/or goiter in breast cancer patients has been suggested to convey a more favorable prognosis. Goiter extension is almost exclusively into retrosternal space, with only a handful of cases reported wi…

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) using 2-deoxy-2-(fluorine-18) fluoro-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) has become a standard diagnostic modality in oncological practice. F18-FDG PET/CT is sensitive in detecting malignancy; however, specificity is low in differentiating infections or inflammatory diseases from tumor. In the present case study, we report a patient with postoperative carcinoma of tongue presenting with cervical lymphadenopathy and fever. The PET/CT scan showed metabolically active generalized lymphadenopathy, and a possibility of lymphoma was suggested. Fine needle …

Reaction of cyanuryl fluoride with sulfanilamide or 4-aminoethylbenzenesulfonamide afforded triazinyl-substituted benzenesulfonamides incorporating fluorine, which were further derivatized by reaction with amines, amino alcohols, amino acids or amino acid esters. Inhibition studies of all the human (h) carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) isoforms, hCA I-XIV with these compounds revealed that they show moderate-weak inhibition of hCA III, IV, VA and XIII, rather moderate inhibition against hCA I, VI, and IX, and excellent inhibition of the physiologically relevant hCA II, VII and XII. The inhib…

BACKGROUND: A variety of imaging modalities are currently used for the preoperative evaluation of cartilage tumors. Although the anatomic details of the lesions are demonstrated well on computerized tomography and magnetic resonance images, those studies yield little information about the biologic activity of the tumors. In this study, we investigated the glucose metabolism of cartilage tumors measured by positron emission tomography and its correlation with histopathologic grades.
METHODS: Thirty-five biopsy-proven cartilaginous tumors in twenty-seven patients were studied with plain radiogr

We report on a patient with Hodgkin's disease who presented with hypodense splenic lesions and corresponding increased glucose metabolism in FDG-PET imaging, four months after completion of initial treatment, suggestive of early relapse. Serological testing for toxoplasma gondii, however, showed evidence of a recently reactivated or newly acquired infection. Three weeks after immediate antibiotic treatment with Daraprime and Sulfadiazin, the splenic lesions had completely resolved. Additionally, serological titers for toxoplasma gondii were normalized and whole body FDG-PET imaging showed no m

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of positron emission tomography (PET) with fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) on the treatment of patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 38 patients with newly diagnosed (n = 25) and recurrent (n = 13) cutaneous melanoma who were referred for evaluation with FDG PET imaging at our institution. We compared the PET findings with computed tomography (CT), which was available in 21 (55%) patients, and tabulated the changes in the diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic management that were…

We studied various liver tumors by positron emission tomography with fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) to examine the diagnostic usefulness of this technique. We also examined the relation between findings on FDG-PET and the characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma. FDG-PET was performed in 78 patients with liver tumors, including 53 with primary liver cancer [48 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) and 5 cholangiocellular carcinomas (CCC)], 20 with metastatic liver cancer, 2 with liver hemangioma, and 3 with focal nodular hyperplasia. For quantitative evaluation, a region of interest (RO…

An 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) whole-body PET scan was performed on a thyroid cancer patient with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis who presented with pulmonary nodules. A recent diagnostic radioiodine whole-body scan was negative. However, the 18F-FDG scan demonstrated intense uptake in the chest lesions as well as in several joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis. Fine-needle aspiration of a pulmonary nodule revealed inflammatory reaction and absence of malignant cells, fungus and tuberculous infection. A repeat chest CT scan after 7 mo of steroid therapy showed a marked decrease in the s

Fluorine-18 deoxyglucose (FDG) is not a very tumour-specific substance, and its accumulation in benign lesions with increased glucose metabolism may give rise to false-positive results and hence cause FDG positron emission tomography (PET) to display relatively low specificity (frequently below 85%). Correct interpretation of FDG PET studies is predicated upon detailed knowledge of morphological abnormalities, and the importance of the correlation of functional and morphological information, as derived from computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, is discussed. It is emphasized that …

Antibiotic resistance is a major global health challenge, with the rapid spread of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-expressing bacteria presenting a serious clinical threat. In this study, we synthesized and investigated a series of novel cephalosporin conjugates envisioned to release MBL inhibitors upon MBL-mediated hydrolysis. The designed compounds consist of a cephalosporin core linked to trifluoromethylated aliphatic thiol-based MBL inhibitors. Conjugates releasing aliphatic thiols upon hydrolysis by the New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) were identified, confirming that fluorination improv

Sesquiterpene lactones, featuring an α-methylene-γ-lactone moiety, serve as lead compounds for anticancer drug development. Their nitrogen-containing analogues, namely, 4-methylideneisoxazolidin-5-ones, have attracted special attention for their promising anticancer properties. Installing a fluorine atom at the exocyclic double bond of these analogues is highly desirable for improving metabolic stability, bioavailability, and lipophilicity, yet this has not been achieved to date due to the lack of an efficient synthetic method, representing a major obstacle in drug development. Herein, we repo…

Safety failures in high-energy lithium-ion batteries often originate from uncontrolled interfacial transport and electrolyte decomposition at elevated voltages. Existing coatings and artificial interphases provide limited protection because they degrade under the oxidative, fluorine-rich conditions generated by LiPF6-based electrolytes. Here, we demonstrate that hot-pressed graphene (HP-Gr) foils operate as an autonomous, self-healing chemical system, in which electrolyte decomposition products are converted in operando into a stable, self-limiting fluorinated surface layer. Rather than being …

Bicyclo[1.1.0]butane (BCB) is a highly strained framework whose reactivity arises from the predominant p-character of its central C-C bond. Using density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, we show that progressive fluorination reduces BCB inversion barriers markedly from ∼64 kcal mol-1 in BCB to ∼3.6 kcal mol-1 in the perfluorinated analogue. NBO decomposition reveals that bridgehead substitution (C1/C3) maximizes hyperconjugative stabilization via interactions but introduces significant steric penalties, whereas C2/C4 substitution offers a more favorable balance

Hybrid organic-inorganic materials enable systematic structural tuning through chemical modification of organic ligands. Predictive control, however, requires a mechanistic understanding of how ligand chemistry and inorganic frameworks jointly determine structural motif selection. Metal-organic chalcogenides (MOCs), where metal-chalcogenide units are covalently bonded to organic ligands, offer an ideal platform in which ligand substitution directly alters the crystal structure. Here, we investigate silver selenide-based MOCs with fluorinated phenyl ligands to elucidate the governing interactio
