Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are extensively applied in both industrial and consumer products. To overcome the drawbacks of traditional treatment techniques, researchers are increasingly exploring two-dimensional (2D) materials as innovative solutions for PFAS remediation. Due to their distinctive properties, 2D materials exhibit significant potential for environmental remediation applications. This review examines a range of 2D materials, including graphene, MXenes, 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), layered double hydroxides (LDHs)

PFAS pose significant remediation challenges due to their chemical stability, structural diversity, and strong affinity for soil components. These properties complicate their mobilization from contaminated soils and necessitate compound-specific treatment approaches. Five PFAS compounds (PFBA, PFOA, PFDA, PFOS, and FOSA) were selected to investigate the influence of molecular structure, representing variations in chain length and head group. Electrokinetic (EK) remediation and hydraulic gradient (HG) treatments were applied to soils with organic matter (OM) contents of 5 %, 30 %, and 50 %. Res

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent and bioaccumulative compounds that pose long-term risks to ecosystems and human health. While PFAS were long considered biologically inert under anaerobic conditions, emerging evidence shows that selected PFAS can undergo microbial biotransformation and, in some cases, biodefluorination in biogeochemically active environments. However, the current understanding remains constrained, as PFAS biotransformation has been interpreted through molecular structure, individual microbial strains, or isolated enzymes, while the concurrent nitrogen,

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are globally persistent pollutants increasingly implicated in adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Although research on PFAS toxicity has expanded rapidly, existing literature remains fragmented, with limited integration across exposure science, epidemiological evidence, molecular mechanisms, and mitigation strategies. Current reviews typically provide broad summaries of PFAS toxicity but seldom focus specifically on cardiovascular disease (CVD) or the mechanistic pathways underlying PFAS-induced cardiovascular injury. Moreover, the rapid emergence of sho

We assessed the risk of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to ovarian function by integrating in vivo mouse data with physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) modeling and population-level analysis. Adult mice received PFOA (0.06, 1.15, 22 mg/kg bw/day; 14 days), followed by analysis of ovarian histology and whole-ovary transcriptomics. Effect doses were converted to human equivalent doses (HEDs) and propagated through a PBTK model to estimate ovarian bioactive concentrations (OBCs) in human ovaries. Median histology HEDs were 41 and 501 mg/week, whereas transcriptomic HED was 322 mg/week values

BACKGROUND: The extensive use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has led to environmental contamination and bioaccumulation of these substances. Previous research linked PFAS exposure to female reproductive disorders, but the mechanism remains elusive. Further, most studies focused on legacy long-chain PFOA and PFOS, yet the reproductive impacts of other long-chain PFAS and short-chain alternatives are rarely explored.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects of long- and short-chain PFAS on the mouse ovary and further evaluated the toxic mechanisms of long-chain perfluorononanoic a

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of fluorinated contaminants of concern due to their long environmental persistence, biological uptake and toxicological implications. Mass spectrometry is currently heavily utilized for PFAS analysis and is capable of precise and selective measurements down to parts per trillion (ppt). However, these are labor-intensive laboratory-only methods that require a substantial expertise and specialized equipment, resulting in high cost and long waiting periods which limit their utility in providing rapid, high-quantity and data rich (large number

This study investigated the electrochemical oxidation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using a Ti4O7 anode in centrate from sludge dewatering. Synthetic solutions containing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), other PFAS, and inorganic constituents (phosphate, ammonium, chloride, carbonate, and acetate salts) found in centrate were studied to assess their impact on the oxidation process. PFOA removal decreased from 95% in a stable electrolyte (NaClO4) to 81% in a Na2HPO4 electrolyte and 30% in a solution mimicking concentrated centrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy detected phospha

This study, one of the few conducted to date on working farms in the US, examined per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in 10 farms treated with biosolids using a paired control-treatment approach. Biosolids are nutrient-rich and inexpensive soil amendments, however, if the biosolids contain PFAS which are known to be toxic, mobile and to bioaccumulate, they can leave lasting negative impacts on farming soil and water. Our study showed significantly higher concentrations of PFAS in biosolids-treated (treatment) soils compared to (untreated) controls. Soil depth, soil physico

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) comprise thousands of fluorinated chemicals. They are of growing concern because many PFAS compounds are persistent and toxic. Food contact materials (FCMs) containing PFAS pose multiple exposure pathways to humans, prompting 12 states to enact laws banning FCMs with PFAS levels exceeding 100 ppm total organic fluorine (TOF).
OBJECTIVE: While LC-MS is often used to measure targeted PFAS compounds, much of the total PFAS content in the sample may be missed. To understand organic fluorine content in samples more comprehensively, we develope

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in soil pose concerns due to their potential health risks and toxicities. However, the pretreatment method for simultaneously extracting different classes of ECs was limited in soil. In this study, a rapid and robust pretreatment method based on a "Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS)" technology was developed for simultaneous extraction of 50 ECs, including 28 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), 17 organophosphate esters (OPEs) and 5 diesters (di-OPEs) in soil. Microbial iron reduction regulates biogeochemical cycles in anoxic environments, yet it is increasingly threatened by the widespread presence of environmental pollutants. Among these, the impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on iron-reducing bacteria is often overlooked. This study investigated the toxicological mechanisms of three PFAS: long-chain perfluorooctanoic acid, short-chain perfluorobutanoic acid, and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid, on Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, while delineating how their distinct chain lengths/structures disrupt extracellular electron transfe

Public concerns exist over whether land application of biosolids is a pathway of introducing large amounts of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) into terrestrial ecosystems. Ongoing research is investigating a variety of high organic matter (OM) and Al/Fe phases for use as amendments to reduce PFAS leaching from matrices including biosolids. Drinking water treatment residuals (DWTRs) have characteristics (e.g., high OM, oxalate-extractable Al (Alox), and/or oxalate-extractable Fe (FeOx) content) linked with PFAS retention and are widely available at low cost. We investigated sorp

The efficacy of 6 binders in sequestering perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) under in vitro ruminal conditions was evaluated. Binders, including bentonite, montmorillonite aluminum pillared clay, chitosan, activated charcoal Norit, and cholestyramine resin (CHM), were tested at a dose of 1.8% (wt/wt; fresh basis). The PFOS (%) binding affinity of binders was calculated in relation to the control. A randomized complete block design (n = 4) was used to analyze the data. Only CHM, an anion-exchange resin, demonstrated strong potential to sequester PFOS (x_=52.5%) The binders did not affect the

The 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide (6:2 FTSAm)-based compounds signify a prominent group of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) widely used in contemporary aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) formulations. Despite their widespread presence, the biotransformation behavior of these compounds in wastewater treatment plants remains uncertain. This study investigated the biotransformation of 6:2 FTSAm-based amine oxide (6:2 FTNO), alkylbetaine (6:2 FTAB), and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) in aerobic sludge over a 100-day incubation period. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a unique class of chemicals synthesized to aid in industrial processes, fire-fighting products, and to benefit consumer products such as clothing, cosmetics, textiles, carpets, and coatings. The widespread use of PFAS and their strong carbon-fluorine bonds has led to their ubiquitous presence throughout the world. Airborne transport of PFAS throughout the atmosphere has also contributed to environmental pollution. Due to the potential environmental and human exposure concerns of some PFAS, research has extensively focused on water, soil, and organ

Nano zero-valent metals (nZVMs) have been extensively utilized for decades in the reductive remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated organic compounds, owing to their robust reducing capabilities, simple application, and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, there remains a dearth of information regarding the efficient reductive defluorination of linear or branched per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) using nZVMs as reductants, largely due to the absence of appropriate catalysts. In this work, various soluble porphyrin ligands [[meso‑tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrinato]cobalt

The extensive use of the perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) alternative sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) has resulted in its widespread detection in the environment and enrichment in wildlife and humans. However, little is known about its potential toxicity, particularly in terms of body development. In this study, zebrafish embryos were acutely exposed to PFOS and OBS for a comparative developmental toxicity assessment. Both PFOS and OBS led to lower body weight and shorter body length, and the damaging effects of PFOS were more severe than those of OBS at the same exposure
