Role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in the detection of eosinophilic esophagitis.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a rare immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease of the esophagus. The main symptoms are dysphagia, retrosternal pain, and repeated food impaction. Esophageal eosinophilic infiltration is seen on histopathological examination. Progressive esophageal stenosis and other complications may occur if not detected and treated. We report a patient with pathologically confirmed EoE whose disease was detected on fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT). This case demonstrates the important role of 18F-FDG PET/CT

Accumulation of 18 F-FDG at Anomalous Systemic Arterial Supply to Normal Lung on 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

Anomalous systemic arterial supply to normal lung is an anatomical variant in which a portion of the lung is supplied by a systemic vessel without a distinct pulmonary sequestration. We report a case of mild to moderate accumulation of 18 F-FDG in the medial basal segment of left lung; corresponding CT images localize this uptake in the tortuous artery arising from the descending aorta with similar uptake to that of descending aorta. Findings are suggestive of anomalous systemic arterial supply to normal segments of the lung. Hybrid PET/CT allows precise anatomical localization and helps in di

Optimized Cingulate Island Sign in Discriminating Dementia With Lewy Bodies From Alzheimer Disease.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to optimize the analysis of cingulate island sign (CIS) to improve its diagnostic accuracy in discriminating dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer disease (AD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with DLB (n = 80), AD (n = 75), and normal controls (n = 22) with 18 F-FDG PET imaging were enrolled in this study. Sixty-two DLB patients also underwent dopaminergic PET scans. The optimized/conventional CIS ratios and metabolism in associated brain regions were evaluated by diagnostic accuracy among groups and correlation with cognitive/dopaminergic dysfunction. RESU

Alterations in cerebral glucose metabolism measured by FDG PET in subjects performing a meditation practice based on clitoral stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between sexuality, or the libido, and spirituality or religion has long been debated in psychiatry. Recent studies have explored the neurophysiology of both sexual experiences and spiritual practices such as meditation or prayer. In the present study, we report changes in cerebral glucose metabolism in a unique meditation practice augmented by clitoral stimulation called, Orgasmic Meditation, in which a spiritual state is described to be attained by both male and female participants engaged in the practice as a pair. METHODS: Male (N=20) and female (N=20) subjects

18 F-FDG PET and MRI Evaluation of Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis.

Autoimmune limbic encephalitis (paraneoplastic or nonparaneoplastic) is a rare condition involving autoantibodies against intracellular or cell-surface proteins of neurons. Patients typically present with acute and progressive neuropsychiatric symptoms. Although the criterion standard for diagnosis remains detection of autoantibodies in cerebrospinal fluid, there are characteristic imaging features that can aid in diagnosis, notably abnormalities in the bilateral medial temporal lobes on imaging, particularly with nuclear imaging. Here, we present 18 F-FDG PET findings of paraneoplastic limbic

Utility of PET/CT in assessing early treatment response in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell malignancy that is characterized by diverse clinical presentations. Although biochemical assessment of disease activity is commonly used to monitor treatment response, findings on magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT), among other imaging modalities, have proven to harbor prognostic value. We sought to corroborate these findings by examining the prognostic significance of fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT scanning in the setting of newly diagnosed MM. We retrospectively analyzed 195 patients with a PET/CT avail

FDG PET/CT for Staging and Restaging Malignant Mesothelioma.

Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive tumor originating from the mesothelial cells and presenting in general with a very poor prognosis. The pleural localization represents the prevailing disease site, while peritoneal involvement is commonly rare. The WHO classifies mesotheliomas into epithelioid, biphasic, and sarcomatoid histotypes, having diverse outcome with the sarcomatoid or biphasic forms showing the poorest prognosis. Given the peculiar rind-like pattern of growth, mesothelioma assessment is rather challenging for medical imagers. Conventional imaging is principally based on contras

Modification of [18F]-FDG PET/CT imaging protocols in obese oncology patients: A nationwide survey.

INTRODUCTION: The use of medical imaging for diagnosis, staging and follow-up in Oncology context is incredibly important, being the use of [18F]-FDG PET/CT particularly advantageous in specific contexts like the case of obese patients. However, imaging the latter can be challenging sometimes, since their own body size may affect overall image quality and adds technical difficulties for the operator(s) performing the examination. METHODS: This research project was developed with the aim of analysing the current personal practices of Portuguese Nuclear Medicine Technologists (NMTs) in the adap

Monitoring Alzheimer's Disease Progression in Mild Cognitive Impairment Stage Using Machine Learning-Based FDG-PET Classification Methods.

BACKGROUND: We previously introduced a machine learning-based Alzheimer's Disease Designation (MAD) framework for identifying AD-related metabolic patterns among neurodegenerative subjects. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the efficiency of our MAD framework for tracing the longitudinal brain metabolic changes in the prodromal stage of AD. METHODS: MAD produces subject scores using five different machine-learning algorithms, which include a general linear model (GLM), two different approaches of scaled subprofile modeling, and two different approaches of a support vector machine. We used our p

Abnormal metabolic covariance patterns associated with multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy.

PURPOSE: Differentiation between neurodegenerative parkinsonisms, whose early clinical presentation is similar, may be improved with metabolic brain imaging. In this study we applied a specific network analysis to 2-[18F]FDG PET brain scans to identify the characteristic metabolic patterns for multiple system atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in a new European cohort. We also developed a new tool to recognize and estimate patients' metabolic brain heterogeneity. METHODS: 20 MSA-P patients, 20 PSP patients and 20 healthy controls (HC) underwent 2-[18F]FDG PET brain imaging

Identifying the individual metabolic abnormities from a systemic perspective using whole-body PET imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Distinct physiological states arise from complex interactions among the various organs present in the human body. PET is a non-invasive modality with numerous successful applications in oncology, neurology, and cardiology. However, while PET imaging has been applied extensively in detecting focal lesions or diseases, its potential in detecting systemic abnormalities is seldom explored, mostly because total-body imaging was not possible until recently. METHODS: In this context, the present study proposes a framework capable of constructing an individual metabolic abnormality netw

Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scans in patients with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Diminished uptake of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) has been observed in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) but little statistical contrast of the regional brain deficits has been undertaken. This study examined prefrontal cortex inter-regional Brodmann area differences to delineate patterns associated with behavioral, neurotransmitter, and general toxicity hypotheses of cerebral involvement in AUD. METHODS: We obtained data from FDG positron emission tomography (PET) and anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for 87 patients with AUD and 41 age- and sex-matched healthy volun

Posterior cortical atrophy: Primary occipital variant.

BACKGROUND: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is one of the atypical Alzheimer's disease variants, characterized by predominant visuospatial and visuoperceptual deficits, with established dorsal and ventral subtypes. A third primary occipital (caudal) variant has been suggested. We aimed to determine its demographics, clinical manifestations, and biomarker findings. METHODS: Fifty-two PCA patients were investigated. Patients underwent neuropsychological assessment, magnetic resonance imaging, and fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-, amyloid-, and tau-positron emission tomography (tau-PET) scans. Normali

Calculation of absorbed dose in paediatric phantoms using Monte Carlo techniques for 18F-FDG and 99mTc-DMSA and the new TIAC.

The radiopharmaceuticals most commonly used in nuclear medicine are 18F-FDG and 99mTc-DMSA, both of which are administered to paediatric and adult patients using the same time activity coefficient. However, the IAEA recommends specific paediatric dosimetry. The aim of this work (TW) was to estimate the absorbed dose for 18F-FDG and 99mTc-DMSA using two paediatric voxel phantoms (Baby and Child) by Monte Carlo techniques. Biokinetic data for both radiopharmaceuticals were obtained from ICRP 128. In addition, the new time-integrated activity coefficient (TIAC) values from a recent publication we

[Role of FDG-PET/CT in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma].

FDG-PET/CT has been widely used not only at the time of diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma but also during and after treatment. With the help of large amount of data on Hodgkin's lymphoma, for which FDG-PET is extraordinarily useful, evidence is also rapidly accumulating for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Currently, there is a consensus that FDG-PET/CT is effective in stratifying the prognosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in a PET-avid disease, especially diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, in the enormous evidence accumulated till date, the variability in the clinical conditions of the pat
