The aim of our investigation was to evaluate possible connection between burning mouth syndrome and hematinic deficiencies, a hypothesis previously reported in the literature with contradictory results. Serum levels of iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, calcium and magnesium were determined in 41 (aged 31-87 years, mean 68,7 yrs) patients with burning mouth syndrome and 35 matched controls (35-83, mean 63 yrs). Serum iron levels were determined according to Fairbanks and Klee. Levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid were determined on commercially available kits (Imx12 and Imx folate assay, Abbot Par

Iron and folic acid deficiency is a significant public health concern, especially in low and middle-income countries, particularly among women of reproductive age, leading to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. In Pakistan, approximately 41.7% of women of reproductive age have iron deficiency. For this research, we conducted 33 key informant interviews and 32 focus group discussions with stakeholders from all four provinces and the two federally administered regions of Pakistan for in-depth and representative bottleneck assessment. The modified Tanahashi model was used to inform the de…

A series of 130 consecutive outpatients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis were screened at the oral medicine department, Glasgow Dental Hos … roved. This difference was significant (P less than 0.001). Most patients withproved vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency improved rapidly on replacement therapy;those with iron deficiency showed a less dramatic response. The 23 deficient patientswere further investigated to determine the cause of their deficiencies and detect the presence of any associated conditions. …

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a globally prevalent infectious disease caused by the hantavirus in rodents.
CASE STUDY: This report describes a case of a 36-year-old male presenting with elevated ferritin, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiency during the early onset phase of HFRS. Despite normal renal function at admission, the patient exhibited persistent fever and thrombocytopenia, leading to a potential misdiagnosis of an atypical HFRS presentation. Abnormal serum levels of ferritin, vitamin B12, and folic acid served as early indicators of renal dysfunction…

INTRODUCTION: Folic acid deficiency is the most common pregnancy-related micronutrient deficiency, leading to fetal neural tube defects (NTDs). Periconceptional folic acid supplementation is highly effective in reducing NTDs by 72%-86%. However, awareness of this essential prevention method remains limited in lower-income countries, contributing to a high rate of preventable birth defects. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the knowledge and factors associated with periconceptional folic acid supplementation among pregnant women attending the Antenatal care clinic at Dilla University Teach…

Plasma and urinary formate concentrations were recently found to be elevated during vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies. It was proposed that formate may be a valuable biomarker of impaired one-carbon metabolism. Formate is an essential intermediary metabolite in folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism and, despite its importance, our knowledge of its metabolism is limited. Formate can be produced from several substrates (e.g., methanol, branched chain fatty acids, amino acids), some reactions being folate-dependent while others are not. Formate removal proceeds via two pathways; the major one b

Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency is a recognized complication after bariatric surgery (BS) that can lead to severe neurological manifestatio … c, vascular, or demyelinating lesions. Laboratory tests revealed thiamine deficiency (20 ng/mL) and folic acid deficiency (1.7 ng/mL). The patient was treated with thiamine 600 mg/day, folic acid 5 mg/day, and cyanocobalamin 1 mg/day, resulting in complete resolution of symptoms.

Anemia is the most common hematologic complication of pregnancy and is associated with increased rates of premature birth, low birth weight and perinatal mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia, and most pregnant women benefit from daily supplementation of 30 to 60 mg of elemental iron. Folic acid deficiency, the most common cause of megaloblastic anemia in pregnancy, is associated with open neural tube defects and other complications. It is recommended that daily supplementation with 4 mg of folic acid be started at least one month before conception and continued through…

In most cases megaloblastic anaemias are the sequel of a deficiency of vitamin B12, more infrequently of a deficiency of folic acid of different etiology. Oriented to frequency and anamnesis the diagnostics follows the leading symptoms of pernicious anaemia (straw colour, glossitis, achlorhydria) and on the basis of special findings in the peripheral blood (hyperchromacia, megalocytosis, much decreased number of reticulocytes, increased iron and bilirubin level) it leads to the proved suspicion of a megaloblastic anaemia. This suspicion is ascertained by the investigation of the bone-marrow, w

BACKGROUND: Anemia is highly prevalent in Cambodian women and children, but data on causes of anemia are scarce. We performed a national mic … ions of folic acid (<10 nmol/L). In the children, the prevalence of iron, vitamin A, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency was <10%. Zinc deficiency, hookworm infection and hemoglobinopathy were significantly associated with anemia in children, whereas in the women none of the factors was significantly associated with anemia. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was more preval …

The newer hematinics are merely refinements of preexisting forms of treatment, but they have aided particularly in a better understanding of the deficiency states. The intrinsic factor of Castle has not been isolated from the gastric juice, and the interrelationships of this substance with the extrinsic factor (vitamin B(12)) and folic acid have not been defined at this time. Vitamin B(12) appears to be the active principle of refined liver extract and alone is probably adequate treatment for pernicious anemia. The other varieties of megaloblastic anemia may result from deficiency of vitamin B

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a multifactorial etiology. Recently, associations between serum homocysteine (Hcy) levels and inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa, have been reported. However, no study has explored the levels of serum Hcy, folic acid, and vitamin B12 in patients with rosacea.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate serum Hcy, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels in patients with papulopustular rosacea (PPR), we characterized the association of these levels with PPR severity.
METHODS: This case-control study included 138 P

Neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida and anencephaly, are severe congenital anomalies affecting the development of the brain and spine. These conditions are often linked to folic acid deficiency during early pregnancy, a modifiable risk factor. While high-income countries have implemented mandatory folic acid fortification in staple foods, resulting in significant reductions in NTD prevalence, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) continue to experience disproportionately high rates of these birth defects. Folic acid supplementation and fortification are proven interventions for…

Folic acid is an essential micronutrient for human growth, and either its excess or deficiency can provoke adverse physiological effects. Therefore, the development of a rapid and highly sensitive detection platform for folic acid is of substantial practical importance. In this study, a D-shaped optical fiber sensor is functionalized with a folate receptor protein to capture target analytes through specific ligand-receptor interactions. Vacant binding sites are subsequently occupied by functionalized gold nanorods for amplifying the fiber's surface plasmon resonance (SPR) response. The incorpo

Megaloblastic anemia (MA), in most instances in developing countries, results from deficiency of vitamin B(12) or folic acid. Over the last two to three decades, incidence of MA seems to be increasing. Of the two micronutrients, folic acid deficiency contributed to MA in a large majority of cases. Now deficiency of B(12) is far more common. In addition to anemia, occurrence of neutropenia and/or thrombocytopenia is increasingly being reported. Among cases presenting with pancytopenia, MA stands out as an important (commonest cause in some series) cause. This article focuses on these and certai…
