Isolated volar dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint is a rare occurrence and is commonly missed. The mechanism of injury typically involves hypersupination. True lateral radiographs are difficult to obtain as patients are usually limited with wrist pronation and supination, resulting in a high miss rate. We describe a 32-year-old male who presented to the emergency department (ED) with pain and swelling of the posteromedial aspect of the right wrist after punching a wall one hour prior to presentation. Examination revealed soft tissue tenderness and mild edema at the right distal ulna wi

BACKGROUND: Axial dislocation involves the displacement of carpal bones along the longitudinal axis of the wrist joint. There are three major groups: (1) axial ulnar, (2) axial radial, and (3) combined. On the other hand, radiocarpal dislocation entails disruption of the articulation between the radius and carpal bones. There are two groups: (group 1) it is either a pure radiocarpal dislocation or a minor avulsion of the radial styloid and (group 2) a fracture-dislocations characterized by a significant radial styloid fragment.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient, a 66-year-old female involved in a

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Radioulnar synostosis is a rare complication of a forearm fracture that restricts pronation-supination. This study presents a case of proximal radioulnar synostosis in an adult male after Monteggia fracture-dislocation who had a loss of pronation and supination movements.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case of proximal radioulnar synostosis in a 43-year-old man who presented with loss of pronation and supination of the right forearm that restricted his daily activities. He had a history of Monteggia fracture-dislocation 9 months back, which was managed wit

Hip fracture is one of the main causes of medical attendance in trauma centers. By contrast, knee dislocation is a challenging and limb-threatening injury. We report a case of a 68-year-old male who sustained a simultaneous ipsilateral hip fracture and knee dislocation after a low-energy fall. Popliteal artery and common peroneal nerve injuries were associated. Knee dislocation treatment included closed reduction, external fixation and popliteal artery repair. Hip hemiarthroplasty was performed using a direct anterior approach. Revision multiligament knee reconstruction surgery was not conside

We present the case of a six-year-old male patient, status post fall with elbow dislocation, successfully reduced. At the time of injury, he had normal appearing x-rays, signs of a mildly discrete chip, and possible epicondyle ossification, but no definitive fracture. A medial condyle fracture with dislocation was missed at the original time of injury. The patient returned several years later with mild elbow stiffness and intermittent pain. CT scan at this time demonstrated nonunion of the medial condyle. The patient underwent subsequent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and is curre

Trapezium fractures are unusual; however, they represent the third most frequent fracture of the carpal bones. As they usually follow a high-energy trauma, they are associated with distal radius, Bennett, or Rolando fractures in 80% of cases. Traditional treatment options include, closed reduction and percutaneous pinning, or open reduction and internal fixation. To minimize the additional surgical trauma, an arthroscopic technique has been developed for safe, minimally invasive management of complex injuries of the first carpo-metacarpal joint. Intra-articular dislocated fracture fragments ar

Percutaneous dilational tracheostomy (PDT) is a commonly used technique in intensive care units (ICUs) for persistent respiratory failure. Early complications of placement includeairway loss, bleeding, and tracheal ring fracture. Tracheostomy tube fracture is a rarely reported complication that can lead to loss of airway and require emergent intervention. We present two case reports of tracheostomy flange fracture and dislocation after PDT. Shortly after insertion, the tracheostomy flange was incidentally noted to have irreparably fractured and separated from the outer cannula. Both patients w

Skeletal trauma accounts for 10% to 15% of all childhood injuries, with approximately 15% to 30% of these representing physeal injuries. Talus fractures are rare injuries in children with an estimated prevalence of 0.008% of all childhood fractures. Cast immobilization is sufficient treatment for non-displaced fractures, however displaced fractures of the talus require surgical intervention to minimize the risk of trauma-related avascular necrosis (AVN) due to disruption of the vascular supply originating from the talar neck. A 13-year-old boy was brought to the accident and emergency (A/E) de

BACKGROUND: Bosworth described an unusual fracture-dislocation of the ankle with fixed posterior fracture-dislocation of the fibula. Previous epidemiological data on the prevalence and characteristics of patients with Bosworth ankle fractures have been limited. Bosworth fracture-dislocations are often missed in patients with ankle fractures. We investigated the outcomes of missed diagnosis and the prevalence of Bosworth fracture-dislocation in patients with ankle fractures.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of inpatients aged 15 years and older with an ankle fracture, who underwe

Fractures and dislocations of the cuneiform bones are rare injuries to the midtarsal foot. The injury severity is often unclear, and the prognostic factors are unknown. The purpose of the present study was to characterize our insights of the diagnostics, therapy, and fracture patterns. We questioned whether the number of involved cuneiform bones and the type of injury would affect the clinical outcome. With this information, we aimed to develop a classification system for injuries of the cuneonavicular joint. Five patients who had sustained complex fracture-dislocation of the cuneiform bones w

Traditionally, Lisfranc fracture dislocations have been treated with transarticular screw fixation. A more recent development has been the use of dorsal bridging plates. The aim of the present study was to compare the radiologic outcomes for these 2 methods. Currently, no data comparing the outcomes of these 2 treatment options have been reported. A total of 62 patients were treated for Lisfranc fracture dislocations during a 6-year period. The inclusion criteria included ≥6 months of follow-up data available. Each fracture was classified using the Hardcastle classification system. Each fractu…

Fractures of the proximal humerus are common and the treatment for both displaced and comminuted variants remains controversial. Treatment options initially consisted of closed reduction, traction, casting, and abduction splints. In the early 1930s, operative treatment for displaced fractures gained popularity, which continued in the 1940s and 1950s. Humeral head replacement for severely displaced fractures of the proximal humerus was introduced in the 1950s. In the 1970s, the Association for Osteosynthesis/Association for the Study of Internal Fixation popularized plates and screws for fractu

Elbow dislocation in children is a very infrequent traumatic event which was first described by Stimson in 1900 and then by Tachdjian in 1990. Its estimated incidence ranges from 3% to 6% of all elbow injuries, peaking at 13-14 years. Elbow trauma is classified considering the direction in which the proximal radioulnar joint shifts with respect to the humerus, into posterior and anterior dislocation. The former is the most frequent and accounts for 95% of cases. Elbow fracture dislocation is an even rarer event. The incidence rate of avulsion fracture of the medial epicondyle is 25-36%, of the…

Rotational dislocations of patella, which involve rotation of the patella around a horizontal or vertical axis are rare. These rotational dislocations of patella are difficult to reduce by close methods. These dislocations can have associated osteochondral and retinacular injury. We report a case of a 20-year-old male who presented with swelling and pain in the right knee following a motor cycle accident. Radiological evaluation using the computed tomography revealed a patellar dislocation with a concomitant Hoffa fracture. Patella was rotated around the vertical axis and was incarcerated into

INTRODUCTION: Perilunate dislocations represent one of the most devastating injuries to the carpus. Fortunately, these injuries are relatively rare, constituting approximately 10% of all carpal injuries. One of the problems associated with this injury is the difficulty of its accurate and early recognition.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: In this study, an uncommon case of bilateral dorsal trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocation following trauma has been reported. The injury was missed initially and the patient was subsequently operated after two weeks. Anatomic reduction was achieved by closed r
