Concha bullosa mucocele with orbital invasion and secondary frontal sinusitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although concha bullosa (CB) is the most common variants of the middle turbinate, mucocele of CB is uncommon. Furthermore, CB mucocele with orbital invasion and secondary frontal sinusitis has not been reported previously. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old Korean male presented with gradually progressive proptosis of right eye and right-sided frontal headache. He had previously undergone endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) 15 and 9 years ago. The endoscopic examination showed an expansive, large middle turbinate with normal mucosa filled the majority of right nasal cavity and displaced …

Umbrella review: CT of frontal, maxillary and sphenoidal sinuses for sexual dimorphism.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to synthesize evidence on the use of computed tomography (CT) for sexual dimorphism based on the frontal (FS), maxillary (MS) and sphenoidal (SS) sinuses. METHODS: An umbrella review was designed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Overviews of Reviews (PRIOR) and considered the Enhancing the Quality and Transparency of Health Research (EQUATOR) network. The study protocol was registered in Open science framework (OSF, https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/5XWJU). Systematic reviews and meta-analyses examining FS, MS and SS through CT imaging were included. The sea

Endoscopic surgical management of sinonasal inverted papilloma extending to frontal sinuses.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal inverted papilloma has been traditionally managed with external surgical approaches. Advances in imaging guidance systems, surgical instrumentation, and intraoperative multi-visualization have led to a gradual shift from external approaches to endoscopic surgery. However, for anatomical and technical reasons, endoscopic surgery of sinonasal inverted papilloma extending to the frontal sinuses is still challenging. Here, we present our experience in endoscopic surgical management of sinonasal inverted papilloma extending to one or both frontal sinuses. METHODS: We present 1

Giant osteomas of the ethmoid and frontal sinuses: Clinical characteristics and review of the literature.

Giant osteomas of the ethmoid and frontal sinuses ary very rare, with only a few dozen cases reported in the literature. Given their rarity, the clinical characteristics and treatment of this disease remain controversial. In this study, the clinical presentation and surgical methods used to treat three patients with giant osteomas of the ethmoid and frontal sinuses are described, combined with a review of the literature from 1975 to 2011. In total, 45 patients with giant osteomas arising from the ethmoid and frontal sinuses (including the present cases) have been reported in 41 articles. Heada

Optical and electromagnetic tracking for navigated surgery of the sinuses and frontal skull base.

BACKGROUND: New hardware and software algorithms in electromagnetic tracking for computer assisted surgery (CAS) have been developed. We aimed to compare electromagnetic tracking for navigated procedures in frontal skull base surgery to optical tracking. METHODS: Target registration error (TRE) was determined in 6 anatomic specimens in an experimental wet-lab. As targets, 6 titanium screws were evenly distributed over the surgical areas of interest from the frontal sinus to the clivus. Optical tracking and electromagnetic tracking was evaluated in identical software environment using a last g

[Osteoma of the frontal sinus leading to acute sinusitis with the complication of subdural empyema].

BACKGROUND: Osteomas of the paranasal sinuses are benign, slow-growing bone tumours with preferred localization in the frontal sinus. They often remain asymptomatic and are found by chance in x-ray examination. Clinical manifestations include headache and orbital complications. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 54-year-old male patient who, based on an osteoma of the frontal sinus, developed an acute frontal sinusitis complicated by subdural empyema. Therapy consisted of two operative interventions. CONCLUSIONS: Aetiogenesis of paranasal osteomas is still unclear. Inspite of their slow …

Macro- and mesomorphology of frontal sinuses in humans: noisiness models relating to their ontogeny.

The debate about the role of the frontal sinuses remains unresolved. In this paper, I explore several statistical and fractal features of the frontal sinus outlines in order to better assess the spatial models of supraorbital torus formation. Although the analyses are restricted to a suite of techniques dealing with two-dimensional projections of the frontal sinuses, here I report many features that explain why it is so difficult to describe the spatial models. I show how the outline circumference scales with enclosed area, how the fractal dimensions of the outlines are distributed, how the me

Pneumosinus dilatans of the frontal sinuses: two cases and a discussion of its aetiology.

Pneumosinus dilatans is a rare condition with the dilatation of aerated paranasal sinuses. We present two cases and discuss its aetiology, the radiological classification of enlarged aerated sinuses, and its treatment. One much quoted hypothesis for the cause of this condition has been that it is due to a 'ball valve' effect of mucosal closure at the frontal recess. However, one of our subjects has started, and done, a considerable amount of subaqua diving since presenting with their condition and has had no symptoms on diving, or progression of their frontal swelling. This observation, along

[Metastatic spread of renal cell carcinoma in the area of the ethmoid and frontal sinuses].

Metastatic lesions represent 1-8% of all malignant tumors of the mouth and jaws, with rare sites of metastasis originating from different primary tumors, especially the lung and breast. The vast majority of these lesions (up to 90%) have been observed in the mandible and maxilla (5-20%). Another rare type of cancer that usually metastasizes to the lungs, lymph nodes, bones, liver or brain may occasionally also show spread to the paranasal sinuses. In the present paper we report our management of a 50-year-old male with renal cell carcinoma who developed metastases to the frontal and ethmoid si
