Violence in emergency services and preventative measures: results from an online survey from Germany.

Violence in emergency medical services (EMS) presents a critical issue, yet data on its extent and on effective preventative measures are lacking. We aim to explore violence experiences and opportunities for prevention from the actor-centered perspective of EMS workers in Bavaria, Germany. We conducted a questionnaire-based online survey of EMS workers (September 2023-January 2024), comprising standardized items and open questions on experiences and perceptions of workplace violence. In this context, we collected data on requested preventive measures. Mixed-methods analysis was applied, includ

A Cycle of Gendered Vulnerability: Understanding Violence, Poverty, and Systemic Failure Among Refugee Women in Malawi.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is an urgent global health and social problem. GBV has implications for women's health outcomes and causes disruption to an individual's ecosystem, including their educational attainment, economic stability, and safety. Refugee women are an underserved subpopulation of women who experience extreme vulnerability related to GBV and poor maternal health outcomes. The primary aim of the study was to gain foundational knowledge about the relationship between gender inequality and GBV in the lives of childbearing-aged refugee women in Malawi, including healthcare utilizat…

Patterns of violence exposure in a life-course perspective and associations to mental and physical health problems and health-related risk behaviors among women and men in Sweden: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individual histories of abuse characteristics and other adversities must be considered to understand poly-victimization and its impact on ill-health, which suggests the importance of understanding how experiences of violence are interconnected over a life-course. OBJECTIVE: To explore gendered patterns of lifetime poly-victimization-physical, emotional, and sexual-and examine how distinct exposure profiles relate to adult health outcomes. The analysis is guided by the Trauma-Informed Theory of Individual Health Behavior (TTB) framework to deepen understanding of gendered trauma tr

Childhood irritability-aggression profiles and parent-to-child violence: Evidence of interactive effect in predicting youth violence.

OBJECTIVE: Early irritability, aggression, and parent-to-child violence (PCV) each are presumed to predict later violent behavior. Few studies, however, have examined these factors simultaneously. This study investigated how irritability and aggression jointly manifested during childhood and whether such manifestations, PCV, and their interactions were associated with late-adolescent violence. METHOD: A prospective sample of 900 participants (55.8 % girls; 55.7 % Black, 24.7 % White, 11.9 % mixed race, 7.7 % other race) from the LONGitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) was f

Bystander Intervention Opportunities and Prosocial Behaviors Among Gender and Sexual Minority College Students.

Bystander intervention education has proliferated as a popular strategy to address campus interpersonal violence, including intimate partner and sexual violence, which remain major public health concerns. Much of the work on bystander engagement, however, is cis- and heteronormative (i.e., centered on those individuals whose gender identity aligns with their biological sex at birth and/or who identify as heterosexual), thus failing to capture the experiences of students who identify as gender or sexual minorities (GSM), a population at increased risk for interpersonal violence. Research has de

Domestic violence and mental health: correlates and conundrums within and across cultures.

Gender-based violence, only recently emerging as a pervasive global issue, contributes significantly to preventable morbidity and mortality for women across diverse cultures. Existing documentation suggests that profound physical and psychological sequelae are endemic following intimate partner violence. The presentation of domestic violence is often culture specific. A new lexicon, prompted by the expansion of human rights analysis, describes particular threats to local women including dowry deaths, honor murder, saiti, and disproportional exposure to HIV/AIDS as well as globally generic peri…

The relationship between the Maria da Penha Law and intimate partner violence in two Brazilian states.

BACKGROUND: Globally, inequality between men and women manifests in a variety of ways. In particular, gender inequality increases the risk of perpetration of violence against women (VAW), especially intimate partner violence (IPV), by males. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 35 % of women have experienced physical, psychological and/or sexual IPV at least once in their lives, making IPV unacceptably common. In 2006, the Maria da Penha Law on Domestic and Family Violence, became the first federal law to regulate VAW and punish perpetrators in Brazil. This study examines the rel

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist was applied when performing the present review. Observational studies reporting prevalence data for any form of TFSV against women aged 16 years and above were considered for inclusion. Four meta-analyses were conducted. Multi-level analysis of the determinants of physical domestic violence against children using longitudinal data from MINIMat mother-child cohort in Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: Despite high levels of physical violence against children (VAC) globally (40-50%), the literature on the determinants of VAC remains inconclusive. Most of the literature on this topic is based on cross-sectional data, and the multi-level nature of the drivers of VAC is widely ignored. This leads to model specification problems and an inability to draw causal inferences. Moreover, despite the higher prevalence of VAC in low-and middle-income countries, studies from high income countries dominate the field. We examined the determinants of physical domestic VAC to address these gaps i

Psychological distress and pain related to gynecologic exams among female survivors of sexual and physical violence: A systematic review.

Gender-based violence is prevalent globally, yet the impacts of sexual and physical violence on women's experiences of routine gynecologic care are not well understood. The purpose of this systematic review of quantitative research is to describe (a) psychological distress and pain related to gynecologic exams among female survivors of sexual and physical violence and (b) differences in distress or pain between survivors and women without this history. Fourteen articles based on 12 discrete studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies were heterogeneous, with a moderate risk of bias; therefore,…
