Genetic diversity of Culex pipiens mosquitoes in distinct populations from Europe: contribution of Cx. quinquefasciatus in Mediterranean populations.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes of the Culex pipiens complex are cosmopolitan, and important vectors of neglected tropical diseases, such as arbovirosis and lymphatic filariasis. Among the complex taxa, Cx. pipiens (with two forms pipiens and molestus) and Cx. quinquefasciatus are the most ubiquitous mosquitoes in temperate and tropical regions respectively. Mosquitoes of this taxa lack of morphological differences between females, but have frank behavioral and physiological differences and have different trophic preferences that influence their vectorial status. Hybridization may change the vectorial

A population-based study to investigate host genetic factors associated with hepatitis B infection and pathogenesis in the Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a significant public health problem that may lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Approximately 30% of the world's population has been infected with HBV and approximately 350 million (5-6%) are persistent carriers. More than 120 million Chinese are infected with HBV. The role of host genetic factors and their interactions with environmental factors leading to chronic HBV infection and its complications are not well understood. We believe that a better understanding of these factors and interactions will l

Population genetic analysis of Helicobacter pylori by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis: extensive allelic diversity and recombinational population structure.

Genetic diversity and relationships in 74 Helicobacter pylori isolates recovered from patients assigned to distinct clinical categories were estimated by examination of allelic variation in six genes encoding metabolic housekeeping enzymes by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis. Seventy-three distinct allele profiles, representing multilocus chromosomal genotypes, were identified. All six loci were highly polymorphic, with an average of 11.2 alleles per locus. The mean genetic diversity in the sample was 0.735, a value that exceeds the level of diversity recorded in virtually all bacterial speci

Genetic Diversity and Distribution of Blastocystis Subtype 3 in Human Populations, with Special Reference to a Rural Population in Central Mexico.

Blastocystis subtype 3 (ST3) is a parasitic protist found in the digestive tract of symptomatic and asymptomatic humans around the world. While this parasite exhibits a high prevalence in the human population, its true geographic distribution and global genetic diversity are still unknown. This gap in knowledge limits the understanding of the spread mechanisms, epidemiology, and impact that this parasite has on human populations. Herein, we provided new data on the geographical distribution and genetic diversity of Blastocystis ST3 from a rural human population in Mexico. To do so, we collecte

Genetic Association Study of IL23R and IL12B Polymorphisms with Psoriasis in a Romanian Population.

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease with a strong genetic basis, driven in part by the dysregulation of the IL-23/Th17 signaling axis. Variants in the IL23R and IL12B genes have been associated with psoriasis susceptibility; however, data from Eastern European populations remains scarce. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the link between IL23R rs11209026 and IL12B rs3213094 polymorphisms and psoriasis susceptibility in a multi-center, Romanian cohort. Methods: We performed a multi-center case-control study including adult patients with clinically and histopath

Optimising the Use of Cryopreserved Genetic Resources for the Selection and Conservation of Animal Populations.

Genetic diversity is essential for the sustainability and adaptability of populations, and is thus a central pillar of the agro-ecological transition. However, within a population, it is inevitable that some amount of genetic variability is lost, and efforts must be made to limit this as much as possible. A valuable tool in this endeavour could be the use of cryopreserved genetic resources in cryobanks, which could assist in the management of various animal populations in the contexts of both selection and conservation. We performed simulations that revealed that the most appropriate use of ex

Impact of specific genetic polymorphisms on pork quality in Argentinian swine populations.

Increasing consumer demand for high-quality pork has led the industry to focus on attributes like color, marbling, and tenderness. Since genetics plays a crucial role in such traits, this study explored the relationship between specific genetic variants and key pork quality parameters. Six candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed in pigs from commercial farms in northeastern Argentina: RYR1 1843 C > T, RN (200R > Q/199I > V), CAST 638 S > A, CAST 76872G > A, SOX6A (A42812066G > A), and SOX6B (B43023574G > C) using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length poly

Genetic Structure and Signs of Local Adaptation in Icelandic Brown Trout Populations.

Loss of anadromy in Salmonids frequently follows postglacial colonization and habitat change, a process driven by selective pressures where benefits of residency outweigh migration costs. At the end of the last Ice Age ca. 10,000 years ago, anadromous brown trout arrived in Iceland and invaded newly formed habitats. Some populations became isolated in headwaters early after the ice retreated, presumably accelerating local adaptation and the evolution of residency. In this study, we assessed the genetic relatedness and diversity of brown trout on a countrywide scale to decipher the number of un

Genetic and population analyses implicate thyroid-related regulation of RNF144B in chondrocalcinosis.

OBJECTIVES: Chondrocalcinosis, characterized by calcium crystal deposition within articular cartilage, affects 5-15% of the general population and has recently been identified as an osteoarthritis risk factor. However, Its biological pathways remain unclear. We conducted a genome-wide association study of radiographically defined chondrocalcinosis knee and hand to identify its genetic determinants. METHODS: GWAS analyses of knee, hand, and combined chondrocalcinosis included up to 9,317 Rotterdam Study participants, with replication inthe Versus Arthritis Osteoarthritis Genetics study and the

Diagnostic performance of plasma pTau217 in genetically admixed South American populations.

Plasma pTau217 is a leading biomarker for Alzheimer's disease, but evidence from genetically admixed populations in low- and middle-income countries remains limited. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of pTau217 and pTau217/Aβ42 measured using Simoa technology in memory-clinic cohorts from Brazil (Cog-Aging-Study, n = 353) and Argentina (GeNED.ar, n = 134). Here we show that both biomarkers accurately identified cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-defined amyloid pathology in Cog-Aging-Study-Brazil and showed high concordance with clinical diagnosis across both cohorts. Genetic analysis and clinical phenotype of pulmonary arterial hypertension in an Algerian population.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) involves progressive obstruction of small pulmonary vessels due to vascular remodeling. Although the genetic architecture of PAH is increasingly understood, it remains poorly characterized in Algeria due to limited studies and the absence of molecular diagnostic infrastructure. OBJECTIVES: To identify pathogenic variants in BMPR2 and other PAH-related genes in Algerian patients, enabling targeted screening of high-risk individuals, refined classification of variants of uncertain significance (VUS), and early, personalized clinical management.

Genetic basis of the circle of Willis characteristics in the healthy and intracranial aneurysm population.

Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm (IA) can result in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (ASAH), a severe and often fatal form of stroke. The configuration of the intracranial arteries - collectively known as the circle of Willis (CoW) - influences the risk of IA development and rupture. Although CoW variation is known to be heritable, its genetic underpinnings and contribution to IA remain poorly understood. Here, we aimed to investigate the genetic architecture of CoW variation and its potential link with IA. Using a semi-automated detection tool, we characterized the diameters, bifurcation

Genetic Risk Factors and Clinical Implications of Glaucoma in the Saudi Population: A Review.

Most glaucoma genetic data derive from European and East Asian cohorts, leaving high-consanguinity Middle Eastern populations under-characterized. This review synthesizes 33 Saudi-specific genetic studies (2014-2024, >9000 participants) to define a population-level glaucoma genetic architecture that diverges substantially from global models and carries direct precision medicine implications. Three findings distinguish the Saudi landscape. First, CYP1B1 functions as the dominant causal gene across both primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) and juvenile-onset open-angle glaucoma (JOAG), accounting f

Longitudinal detection and genetic characterization of feline coronavirus in a captive cheetah population.

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infections, including fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), have been documented in captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), but longitudinal data on viral circulation and genetic diversity in this species remain limited. In this study, we performed a 3.5-year molecular epidemiological investigation of a closed captive cheetah cohort at a single zoological facility in Japan. Non-invasive monitoring of 17 individually identified cheetahs by reverse-transcription quantitative PCR of faecal samples revealed long-term maintenance of FCoV in the population, with highly va

Malaria-Related Host Genetic Variation in an Endemic Population of Southern Senegal.

Host genetic variation is a key determinant of malaria susceptibility, particularly in endemic regions where intense transmission has driven strong selective pressures on red blood cell-related genes. However, Senegalese and other African populations remain underrepresented in genomic studies, limiting population-specific inference. We analyzed malaria-related host genetic variants in 140 febrile patients from southern and south-eastern Senegal, focusing on key loci (ACKR1, Dantu blood group, HBB and G6PD) and on composite Multilocus Genotype Profiles (MGPs). We described the co-occurrence of

Genetic Landscape of NAT2 in the Moroccan Population: Implications for Isoniazid Pharmacogenetics in Tuberculosis.

The NAT2 gene encodes N-acetyltransferase 2, an enzyme critically involved in the biotransformation of numerous xenobiotics and aromatic amines, including isoniazid, a cornerstone drug in tuberculosis therapy. Genetic polymorphisms in NAT2 lead to variable acetylation rates, clinically categorized as poor, intermediate, or rapid metabolizer phenotypes influencing drug efficacy and toxicity. This study aims to characterize the NAT2 polymorphisms in 240 Moroccan individuals using pre-existing clinical exome sequencing data. A total of fourteen variants were identified in the NAT2 coding region,

Fifty Shades of Risk: Population Studies and the Genetic Architecture of Kidney Diseases.

Genetics is transforming medicine, providing the possibility of highly specific diagnoses, which in turn allow molecularly defined cohort studies that facilitate detailed insights into gene-specific or even variant-specific prognosis and treatments. Yet, our understanding of genetic variation is changing. Previously, genetic testing typically resulted in a binary result, where an underlying genetic cause was either identified or not. With the increasing availability of population genomic data, a more nuanced view is emerging. Many disease-associated variants can also be identified in the unaff
