As the aging population grows, anesthesiologists increasingly care for older surgical patients with geriatric syndromes. This paper reviews key geriatric syndromes, particularly frailty and postoperative delirium, and highlights their implications for anesthesia practice with evidence-based management strategies. Frailty, a predictor of poor surgical outcomes, is often underrecognized preoperatively. Screening tools such as the Fried Frailty Phenotype and Hospital Frailty Risk Score can help identify at-risk patients. Prehabilitation, including exercise, nutritional optimization, and multimoda

Anosognosia refers to impaired awareness of patients to realize deficits related to a disorder and is a common symptom of dementia. Anosognosia has far-reaching consequences for diagnosis and treatment and is probably associated with unfavorable prognosis. This study examined the relationship between anosognosia and depression in patients with Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Assessment included interviews of patients and their caregivers. Depressive symptoms were evaluated with observer and self-rating instruments: the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and the "mood" subscale of the Nurses Observat

A self-administered questionnaire was used to determine care home staff's reported knowledge of the urinary catheter care standards published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Association of Continence Care, and to see whether this differed in homes with higher catheterization rates. Seven hundred and fifty out of 1438 (52%) nursing and care staff from 37 randomly selected care homes with high, medium and low catheterization rates responded. There was no difference in reported practice in care homes in the three health districts sampled or those with differing ca

Urinary incontinence (UI) is now recognized as a prevalent, physically and emotionally disruptive, and costly health problem in the geriatric population. Because incontinence may be a manifestation of a subacute or reversible process within or outside of the lower urinary tract, and because effective treatment is available, it is important for primary care physicians to identify and appropriately assess incontinence in their geriatric patients. The initial evaluation of an incontinent geriatric patients. The initial evaluation of an incontinent geriatric patient includes a targeted history and

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to analyse the impact of a simultaneous 180-Watt XPS™ GreenLight laser treatment of the prostate in addition to an initially planned sole placement of a suprapubic catheter in geriatric patients initially hospitalised only for the purpose of the latter procedure.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out on 48 patients undergoing both procedures simultaneously over an 18-month period (1/2015 - 6/2016).
RESULTS: On admission, the examined patients (mean age 72.46 years) had a mean ISAR score of 2.5 (0 - 6) points indicating a need for geriatric care. Thes

BACKGROUND: With the rising geriatric population in India, the mental health needs of older adults have become increasingly complex. Nurses in eldercare facilities are at the forefront of managing these challenges, yet their lived experiences are underexplored. Aim To explore the perceptions of stress and challenges faced by Nurses while managing elderly mental health concerns in eldercare facilities.
METHODS: A qualitative study using a transcendental phenomenological approach was conducted among ten nurses from three eldercare facilities (including both destitute and paid homes) in Bengalur

BACKGROUND: The American College of Surgeons (ACS) published the Geriatric Surgery Vlerification (GSV) program in 2019, establishing standards to improve geriatric care perioperatively. A multidisciplinary approach to the management of these patients aims to optimize preoperative health, mitigate perioperative complications, and provide valuable insights in terms of postoperative expectations for recovery. At Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), the first major academic hospital to be verified by the ACS, implementation of GSV standards has included a collaborative effort by a team including an

UNLABELLED: Bedsores prevention is part of the specific role of the nurse, as defined namely in the order 84-869 of the 17. July 1984. The analysis of the risk factors for the appearance of bedsores shows that immobilization, reduction of mobility linked to vigilance disorders and the urinary and faecal incontinence are major elements which justify protocols of well defined local cares. More recently, the role of undernutrition was highlighted but the recommendations lack accuracy. The proteino-energizing undernutrition is frequent among the elderly patients in hospital, reaching 60% of all th

INTRODUCTION: Recently, a Geriatric Surgery Unit (GSU) was established in the Sheba Medical Center. The Unit's aims include: professional assessment of surgical candidates, approval of the surgical plan by a multidisciplinary team discussion (MTD), and meeting the specific needs of the geriatric patient undergoing surgery.
METHODS: We describe the establishment of the GSU and preliminary results from the first year of its activity (January-December 2022). The GSU team consisted of a geriatric nurse practitioner (NP), a geriatric physician, surgeons, anesthesiologists and a physiotherapist. In

Six long-term nursing home residents who experienced fractures of the long bones in the absence of obvious trauma are described. All patients had been essentially non-weight-bearing for at least 2 years before the episode. Four patients experienced fractures on more than one occasion. There was no evidence of physical abuse in any of these of patients; indeed, evidence against abuse was fairly good. Nonetheless, physical abuse was alleged by the patients' families in four of the cases. Long bone fracture in the absence of trauma in patients after prolonged bed rest has been well described in t

OBJECTIVES: Catatonia in older adults is often under-recognized, particularly when it occurs in the setting of acute medical illness or neurological disease. Benzodiazepines are first-line therapy, yet geriatric prescribing frameworks such as the American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria discourage benzodiazepine use in older adults, which can contribute to delays in treatment.
METHODS: We report a 71-year-old woman with prior ischemic stroke and major depressive disorder who presented with failure to thrive, behavioral withdrawal, and motor findings consistent with catatonia. Catatonia seve

This pilot study investigated the feasibility of a nurse-led fall prevention strategy in community-dwelling older persons. The sample included 126 subjects (mean age = 76 years) who could rise from a chair and transfer independently. During a home visit, a research nurse identified individuals at risk: a history of >or= 2 falls in the previous year or difficulties in gait and/or balance. Patients not at risk received an educational leaflet. Older persons at risk received an evaluation of risk factors for falling. Whenever problems were identified, the nurses gave specific advice and subjects w

Frailty is a multidomain reduction in physiologic reserve that impacts recovery and can contribute to poor outcomes following trauma beyond what chronological age, comorbidities, or injury severity predicts. In geriatric trauma patients, a large proportion are frail or prefrail on initial encounter in the emergency department, and because there are opportunities for actionable management plans, major trauma guidelines endorse systematic screening integrated into coordinated geriatric trauma care. We reviewed the literature and identified practical instruments used in the acute trauma setting f

BACKGROUND: Older adults are disproportionately affected during disasters because of multimorbidity, frailty, functional dependency, and reliance on continuous healthcare and social support services. Nurses play a central role in maintaining safety, continuity of care, communication, and clinical coordination during emergencies. However, disaster preparedness in geriatric care settings remains inconsistently developed and has often been examined through a narrow pandemic-related infection prevention and control lens rather than through comprehensive disaster nursing competency frameworks.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia among older adults. Valvular heart disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, hypertension, coronary artery disease, pericarditis, thyrotoxicosis, pulmonary disease, cardiac surgery, alcohol excess, and alcohol withdrawal are associated with atrial fibrillation. Nurses caring for older adults need to understand the condition's pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic data and treatment protocols, and adherence issues to prevent the formation of emboli in chronic atrial fibrillation and to understand treatment of this common arrhyt
