Gingivitis is a very common oral disease highly prevalent in adults that, if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis. It involves a complex and slow interaction between the host response and the oral microbiome represented by the dental plaque. The inflammation of the gingiva is associated with the activation of pathological angiogenesis and the existence of a high number of newly formed blood vessels quantified as microvessel density (MVD). The present study includes a number of 51 gingival biopsies from patients with different gingival indexes (GI): GI = 0, n = 12; GI = 1, n = 15; GI =…

Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) has an unclear pathogenesis with the oral microbiome and viral infections, such as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), thought to contribute. Although the relationship between the FIV status and FCGS is not clear, one theory is FIV-induced immune dysregulation could contribute to oral dysbiosis, promoting FCGS development. To further understand the relationship between FCGS, FIV infection, and the oral microbiome, oral cavities of forty cats fitting within 4 groups (FIV- without gingivitis, FIV+ without gingivitis, FIV- with gingivitis, FIV+ with gingiv…

The present study explores antimicrobial activities of Caesalpinia sappan extracts against three strains of oral pathogenic bacteria; Streptococcus mutans DMST9567 (Smu9), Streptococcus mutans DMST41283 (Smu4), and Streptococcus intermedius DMST42700 (Si). Ethanol crude extract of C. sappan (Cs-EtOH) was firstly compared to that of other medicinal plants using disc diffusion method. Cs-EtOH showed significantly higher effective inhibition against all tested strains than other extracts and 0.12% chlorhexidine with the inhibition zone of 17.5 ± 0.5, 18.5 ± 0.0, and 17.0 ± 0.0 mm against Smu9, Sm

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of curcumin mouthwash as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in the treatment of chronic gingivitis and to compare curcumin to chlorhexidine in terms of its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients aged 20-40 years with generalised chronic gingivitis were included in the study. They were randomly divided into 3 groups of 10 each. In group 1, patients underwent scaling and root planing followed by chlorhexidine mouthwash (SRP/CHX Gr-1); in group 2, patients underwent scaling and root planing followed by curcumi…

The case report described here discusses gingivitis artefacta major, an oral presentation of self-injurious behaviour, in an adolescent. On presentation, the patient knew well the ramifications of her gum scratching behaviour, however, was unable to stop. At further presentations new lesions had appeared with further bone loss. The cause of her behaviour seemed to be of psychological origin and therefore no interventive dental treatment was possible until this issue was resolved. A more preventive approach was adopted in the meantime. Referral to appropriate services from the dental profession…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of exfoliative cytology as a diagnostic tool for patients with clinical symptoms of desquamative gingivitis.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Fifteen patients clinically diagnosed with desquamative gingivitis were evaluated. At their first visit, a cytologic smear was performed on the gingival lesion. On their second visit, a gingival biopsy was obtained from the perilesional site. Control smears were taken from 15 patients who had no oral lesions.
RESULTS: The cytologic findings showed diffuse or collective Tzanck cells in 3 of the 15 cases. The findings of the ot…

BACKGROUND/AIM: Gingivitis is a frequent phenomenon in children considered to be a risk factor for the occurrence and progression of paradontal tissue disease. So, it is necessary not only to identify inflammation, but also to react in due time and adequately in order to avoid further disease spread and the beginning of periodontitis. The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency of a low-level laser application in the therapy of chronic gingivitis in children.
METHODS: The study a included hundred of children with permanent dentition suffering from chronic gingivitis. All the examine…

BACKGROUND: Studies in humans have indicated that systemically administered flurbiprofen and ibuprofen may reduce gingivitis. De novo plaque formation is enhanced at tooth surfaces adjacent to inflamed gingivae.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of ibuprofen on gingivitis and plaque build-up.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eleven subjects were recruited for the study and were given oral hygiene instruction, scaling and professional mechanical tooth cleaning (PTC). At the end of a preparatory period (Day 0), the participants were tol…

Th2 type lymphocytes are characterized by high expression of CD30 glycoprotein. Increased serum levels of CD30 and Th2 IL-4 producing T-cells are found during AIDS progression. Since HIV-positive patients are more susceptible to periodontal disease, quantitative analysis of positive cells for the CD30 receptor in chronic gingivitis of both HIV-infected and non-infected patients (NSG) would help to clarify the immunoregulation of HIV-associated periodontal diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate CD30+ lymphocytes in gingival biopsies from sites exhibiting chronic gingivitis on HIV-p…

Gingival enlargements (GEs) are a commonly observed clinical entity in dentistry. The etiology maybe local, systemic, or a combination. Having a good diagnostic certainty of the type of GE helps the clinician to not only manage the entity locally but facilitates a thorough workup of the systemic factors. This article offers an in-depth look at the diagnosis and subsequent clinical management strategies for various forms of GE. It emphasizes the importance of accurately recognizing the diverse clinical presentations of GE, guided by its etiopathogenesis, clinical features, and other investigati

A 12-year-old spayed female American short-haired cat presented with a palatal gingival mass located between the right maxillary third incisor and the canine teeth. The mass was dark red and had a narrow attachment to the gingival margin of the canine tooth. The mass was completely removed by marginal excision and the histopathological diagnosis was a capillary hemangioma. The mass did not relapse until 1 year later; however, the tooth was extracted because of cervical resorption of the right maxillary canine immediately adjacent to the mass resection site. This report presents a rare case of

We report the case of a 36-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with a 10-week history of intractable gingivitis. Gingival telangiectases may represent the sign of dermatomyositis. Early identification is essential for diagnosis and immediate treatment.
